Before in # 2 the septum completely blocks the passage from R.A to L.A. –degeneration of upper part of septum develops to maintain the opening – secondary foramen 3

Primary septum- with a primary foramen
Septum grows from roof of atrium to floor (cushion) and leaves an opening –primary foramen for blood to flow from the r.atrium to l. atrium

Secondary septum grows from roof of atrium- when lungs expand on first breaths, pressure in L.A. increases forces “flap” to cover foramen
