Kekuli Merritt's Elijah Mack wins IBA 'Young Entrepreneur of the Year' award
The 2021 Indigenous Business Award (IBA) program announced their awardees earlier this week. Our own (though originally from the Nuxalk Nation) Elijah Mack-Stirling, owner of Kekuli Cafe has won the
Young Entrepreneur of the Year
title. The New Relation-ship Trust (NRT) sponsored this award category."In 2018 Elijah Mack-Stirling, just 22 years old, ful-
lled his dream by becoming an entrepreneur and the very rst Kekuli Cafe franchise owner. With its ocial slogan, “Don’t panic… we have ban
-nock,” Kekuli Cafe Merritt is listed as one of the best places to eat in town. Kekuli Cafe Merritt provides a traditional Indigenous ambiance with light pow wow
music and First Nations art, while reecting the owners’
passion for cooking and creating a space where all are welcomed and acknowledged.
Kekuli Cafe Merritt o ers employees exible schedules and encourages them to
pursue opportunities to develop their talents and skills. With a focus on community service, Kekuli Cafe Merritt opens its doors to patrons for a free breakfast and dinner on Christmas Day and donates to local groups, homeless shelters, and sporting orga-nizations through the friendship centre movement."
Starting Nov 4, the BC Indigenous Business Award website will release short lms
featuring each awardee. The IBA program creates space for Indigenous entrepreneurs
to share their dreams, hard lessons and dene success in a new way. The program rec
-ognizes businesses that are generating economic development opportunities, helping to create partnerships with industry while shaping communities towards prosperity. And Elijah will soon be opening another franchise location in Kamloops. Congrats!

Coho salmon enumeration activities Coldwater River at Voght Park
— Until late November —
This project occurs annually in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and provides important information on Interior Fraser Coho.
Coho are counted as they pass through a trap box and with the use of sonar. Migrating Coho that enter the trap box are sam
-pled before being released upstream to continue their migration. Data
collected includes length, sex, and origin (hatchery versus natural). Handling the sh also provides an opportunity to assess their overall
health. The study design and operational procedures ensure minimal
disruption to Coho migration and aim to reduce stress as much as possible. The majority of Coho migrate past the site unimpeded,
through an opening in the fence, and are captured by the sonar unit.
The injury rate of sh in the trap is very low; less than 0.2% of sh, on
average, passing through the site display fresh wounds. This project
is NWSFA’s top priority during Coho migration and obtaining quality data to inform sheries management decisions is the main objective.
For your safety, please stay off and away from the infrastructure required to carry out this project.
For more info or to report damage/vandalism, please
contact the NWSFA Program Manager at 250-378-4235
