History of Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse was originally a rabbit, named “Oswald.” Walt Disney & his partner Ub Iwerks redesigned him as a mouse named “Mortimer,” who soon became “Mickey.” He debuted in the animated short, “Steamboat Willie,” in Nov. 1928. Mickey has to star in over 120 cartoons and debuted in his first motion picture, “Fantasia: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” in 1940. Mickey has gone through almost half a dozen redesigns over time, like the addition of more “mouse-like features” and white gloves.the addition of white gloves. According to the 2009 Financial Summary by the Walt Disney Company, over $2 billion in revenue came from Mickey Mouse and Disney character related consumer products all over the world. Mickey Mouse is well known all over the globe in a number of ways through television programming, theme parks, merchandising such as clothing, music, toys, electronics, books, and much more. Kids have fallen in love with Mickey and the entire Disney franchise most through television programming. The Disney Channel is available in over 160 countries in 32 languages. It’s currently in 97 million homes in the U.S. and featuers 24/7 family programming ranging from cartoons to original series and movies.

The man behind the mouse
Walter Elias Disney was one of the most innovative cartoonists, visionaries and artists of the 20th century. Born in Chicago in Dec 5, 1901, a young Disney would sell his cartoons for extra money before moving to California to persue it as a career. After debuting Mickey Mouse in 1928, he continued on to pioneer all areas of animation. In 1937, he released the first animated musical feature film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” and later continued to release four more feature films in less than five years. In 1954, he began television production releasing the first full color show, “Wonderful World of Color” in 1961. He opened Disneyland, his first theme park in 1955 and set the ground work for Walt Disney World following in 1971. During his liftetime, he attained 950 honors, including 8 Academy Awards and seven emmys. He passed away December 15, 1966.
