SERVO MOTORS

Servo motors are special category of motors, designed for applications involving position control, velocity control and torque control. These motors are special in the following ways: 1. 2. 3. 4. Lower mechanical time constant. Lower electrical time constant. Permanent magnet of high flux density to generate the field. Fail-safe electro-mechanical brakes.

For applications where the load is to be rapidly accelerated or decelerated frequently, the electrical and mechanical time constants of the motor plays an important role. The mechanical time constants in these motors are reduced by reducing the rotor inertia. Hence the rotor of these motors have an elongated structure. For DC brush type motors, the permanent magnets are mounted on the stator, while the armature conductors are on the rotor. The rotating conductors make contact with the stationary electrical source via a brush-commutator assembly. A DC tacho is mounted on the motor shaft, for indicating the shaft speed in-terms of a voltage. These motors also come with fail-safe electro-mechanical brakes. In the event of failure of the utility mains, the antennas are stopped by these brakes.

ELECTRONIC SERVO MOTOR IN SEWING MACHINE
110 volt Electronic Servo Motors for most all sewing applications. All of the D.C. motors include a 4 position switch to control the maximum speed sewing machine speed. All ACF and ATN motors feature direct drive, are clutch-less, and include an electronic brake. Each motor has a 110 volt outlet to power a lamp. These motors include a red color illuminated power ON/OFF switch. No wiring is necessary.

CLUTCH MOTORS
A clutch is a mechanical device which provides for the transmission of power (and therefore usually motion) from one component (the driving member) to another (the driven member). The opposite component of the clutch is the brake. Clutches are used whenever the ability to limit the transmission of power or motion needs to be controlled either in amount or over time (e.g. electric screwdrivers limit how much torque is transmitted through use of a clutch; clutches control whether automobiles transmit engine power to the wheels). In the simplest application clutches are employed in devices which have two rotating shafts. In these devices one shaft is typically attached to a motor or other power unit (the driving member) while the other shaft (the driven member) provides output power for work to be done. In a drill for instance, one shaft is driven by a motor and the other drives a drill chuck. The clutch connects the two shafts so that they may be locked together and spin at the same speed (engaged), locked together but spinning at different speeds (slipping), or unlocked and spinning at different speeds (disengaged).

Industrial Sewing Machine Clutch Motors
PERFORMANCE The motor is especially designed with powerful performance for industrial sewing machines purpose. SMOOTH ROTATION Vibration and noise are minimized. LOW TEMPERATURE RISING The temperature rising of the motor is extremely low.

ACCURATE CLUTCH OPERATION The size and weight of the flywheel eliminate speed reduction when it engaged with the clutch. Heavy-duty lining material prevents any slipping. Therefore the accurate clutch operation permits instant starting and stopping of the sewing machine.

ADJUSTABLE CLUTCH HEAD The operating lever can always be kept in line with the pitman rod and foot treadle. Loosen the bracket holding screw so that the pulley side can end of bracket rotates freely. Now adjust the clutch lever to the most suitable operating position. Then, tighten the bracket holding screw and commence operation.

BELT TIGHTENER The motor is provided with a belt tightener of American dimensions. The tension of the belt is easily adjusted by simply loosening the adjustment nut.

EURO-BASE Dimensions for EURO-standard installation is available. Reverse rotation and Voltage easily obtained

Just change the switches, the reverse ration and the voltage are easily obtained without changing the troublesome wiring.

Faceoff: servo vs clutch sewing machine motor
Servo Motor The two major advantages of the Servo sewing motor are that you can control the speed of the motor and that they are completely silent when the pedal is not engaged. Some other advantages include:
y y y y y

They consume up to 90% less energy than clutch motors 1/3 lighter than clutch motors Reverse motor rotation with the flick of a switch Nothing to wear or adjust Adjusted speed remains the same no matter how hard the pedal is pressed

Many of our customers find that the sewing machine is much easier to control with a Servo motor because of the speed control. This is especially helpful for beginner sewers but also for projects that simply don¶t require high speed stitching. The standard Servo motor can feature 1/2HP, 3/4HP or 4/5HP, which provide different degrees of torque. The Techsew Smart Servo motor is the only motor that features 4/5HP and has 18 different speed settings between 100 and 1800 RPM. Changing your sewing speed is simple with the touch of a button and the current speed is displayed on the bright digital screen.

Clutch Motor Clutch motors are typically used in manufacturing of clothing, upholstery and other trades which require high speed sewing for a high volume of production. The speed of a clutch motor is not controllable however clutch motors do provide a consistent speed and often feature enough torque to sew through thick materials. Clutch motors are available in 1725 RPM and 3450RPM, 1/2HP or 3/4HP. For beginning or amateur sewers, or for projects that require slower stitching speeds, I recommend the use of a Servo motor. However, for sewers who do not mind faster sewing speeds and require the highest possible sewing volume, a clutch motor is a suitable alternative.

Direct Drive Motor
Direct drive systems couple the system¶s load directly to the motor without the use of belts or gears. In some situations, brushed or brushless servo motors may lack adequate torque or resolution to satisfy some applications¶ needs. Therefore, mechanical means, such as gear reduction systems to increase torque and resolution, are used to meet system requirements. The Dynaserv Direct Drive can provide very high torque in a modest package size and solves many of the performance issues of the gear reducer. All in a system that is as easy to use as a stepping motor.

Increased efficiency: The power is not wasted in friction (from the belt, chain, etc, and especially, gearboxes.) Reduced noise: Being a simpler device, a direct-drive mechanism has fewer parts which could vibrate, and the overall noise emission of the system is usually lower. Longer lifetime: Having fewer moving parts also means having fewer parts prone to failure. Failures in other systems are usually produced by aging of the component (such as a stretched belt), or stress. High torque at low rpm. Faster and precise positioning. High torque and low inertia allows faster positioning times on permanent magnet synchronous servo drives. Feedback sensor directly on rotary part allows precise angular position sensing. Drive stiffness. Mechanical backlash, hysteresis and elasticity is removed avoiding use of gearbox or ball screw mechanisms.

Disadvantages
The main disadvantage of the system is that it needs a special motor. Usually motors are built to achieve maximum torque at high rotational speeds, usually 1500 or 3000rpm. While this is useful for many applications (such as an electric fan), other mechanisms need a relatively high torque at very low speeds, such as a phonograph turntable, which needs a constant (and very precise) 33 1/3 rpm or 45 rpm. A 1500 rpm motor couldn't even start rotating if fed the necessary voltage to make it spin at 33 rpm, and it wouldn't be precise keeping that speed. The slow motor also needs to be physically larger than its faster counterpart. For example, in a belt-coupled turntable, the motor diameter is about 1 inch (2.5 cm). On a direct-drive turntable, the motor is about 4" (10 cm). Also, direct-drive mechanisms need a more precise control mechanism. Low voltage variations on a high-speed motor, which is reduced to low rpms can go unnoticed, but in a direct-drive, those variations are directly reflected on the rotational speed.
