Smart Roads

Abstract
• In this model we have shown how we can generate voltage from
the busy road traffic. We are converting the frictional energy of
vehicle into mechanical energy and then this mechanical energy
is further converted into electrical energy with the help of the
powerful dynamo. So we install a one powerful dynamo on the
road. Output of the dyanmo is connected to the l.ED in this
project. When we move the shaft of the dyanmo then dyanmo
generate a voltage and this voltage is sufficient to drive the LED.
• In actual practice we use this dyanmo to generate a voltage and
after generating a voltage we charge the battery . When battery is
fully charged then we use this battery as a storage device. We use
this storage device to run the lights of the road.
How to extract energy from roads
• There could be two ways through which we
can use force applied by us or our cars ,to the
road while trying to move .

i) from vehicles
ii) from a pedestrian
From moving vehicles
• We can connect one mechanical rod with the
dynamo and fit this rod on the surface of the
road. When any vehicle will move from this
roller then ,due to friction, vehicle will Rotate
the roller and roller then moves the dynamo.
When dynamo moves ,it will generate a
voltage and this voltage could be efficiently
liked to street lights.
From walking Pedestrian
• We can use a compression pad carring a
piezoelectric crystal under it ,The pressure of
the footsteps on the pads generate electricity,
which can then be stored in a battery.
• Generally this kinetic energy goes to waste, but
by utilizing piezoelectric materials (such as
crystals and certain ceramics) it can be
harnessed and used to power lighting and
other devices.
Smart roads
• As such, the embedding of piezoelectric generators and
roller genset , to create "smart roads" could eventually
become an integral part of traffic management systems.
The Piezo Electric Generator (IPEG™) developed by Isreali
University spin-out company Innowattech has the ability
to harvest energy from weight, motion, vibration and
temperature changes and as such it is a pioneering
invention for Parasitic Energy harvesting. Innowattech has
refined specific configurations of the IPEG to create high
efficiency generators from roadways, railways and airport
runways.
