Enterprise Champions play an important role in providing Cambridge Enterprise with an essential
communication channel to and from the University's departments. The Champions meet regularly to discuss
topics related to commercialising technology and to discuss Cambridge Enterprise activities and progress.
These meetings also provide an opportunity for the Champions to share departmental research priorities, 'hot'
technologies and critique Cambridge Enterprise's performance.
Enterprise Champions have a wide range of backgrounds. Their experience ranges from undertaking
collaborative research with companies to commercialising new technology, starting companies, fundraising and
balancing the demands of academic research and business. Within their departments the Champions act as a
first port of call for researchers and academics who want advice on commercialisation routes and additionally
help their colleagues to make the most of what Cambridge Enterprise has to offer.
A number of departments have nominated an Enterprise Champion to provide informal advice to department
members on interacting with business and commercial research. Researchers and academics are invited to
discuss their inventions with their department's Enterprise Champion if they wish to do so.
Cambridge Enterprise continues to work with the Enterprise Champions on raising awareness of Cambridge
Enterprise services within the University and on new ways in which we can support the departments and
academics. This is an important role and we welcome and encourage suggestions from departments to
nominate Enterprise Champions. There can be more than one Enterprise Champion in a department, which
may be particularly relevant to the larger departments. To nominate a new Enterprise Champion please
contact Teri Willey, Chief Executive at teri.willey@enterprise.cam.ac.uk.

The Horizon seminars are organised by Research Services Division with support from Cambridge Enterprise.
The last 150 years' improvements in health and sanitation are increasing people's longevity in the developed
world. In Europe, people over 80 now represent the fastest-growing age demographic. In coming years,
medicine will move into our cells, and technologies will assist us to live independently for longer. Will the

‘population pyramid’ become a skyscraper? What effects will an age boom have on the individual, family,
society and economies worldwide? Is the ‘demographic time bomb’ in fact an opportunity? Hear the opinion
of academics and thought leaders from Cambridge and beyond at this HORIZON Seminar, taking place at
the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.
We may not realise it but complex intelligent systems already play a central role in our everyday lives. As
we continue to make significant advances in technology, these systems are becoming increasingly
prevalent, but most are still dependent on human decision-makers to manage their operations. But in the

future, is there a possibility that a machine could actually think?
The HORIZON Seminar: The Thinking Machine, taking place at Emmanuel College, will explore cross-
disciplinary research currently taking place in cognisance and cognitive systems and will showcase the
latest innovative technologies being developed by renowned University of Cambridge academics.
