Room Heating System

We were required to develop a design brief and redesign a product which was already in the market.
The product that I had taken was a room heating device.
Room heating is an ancient concept, The first traces of a proper system employed were found as
early as 5000 B.C. in Korea and China.
The modern heaters employ a variety of technologies and materials to increase the efficiency but
there are still areas in which intervention of design research and redesign are required.

Space Heating
Radiative Heating: This heat directly warms people and objects in the
room, rather than warming the air. This style of heater is particularly useful in areas
which unheated air flows through.
Oil heaters consist of metal columns with hollow cavities, inside which oil
flows freely around the heater. A heating element at the base of the heater heats up
the oil, which then flows around the cavities of the heater by convection. The oil acts
as a heat reservoir or buffer, with a relatively high specific heat capacity

Surface Heating
The difference between the modern central heating system and the heating style of the
Europeans was that the Europeans used a central heating unit like a boiler which
transmitted the heat through pipes through out the rooms. While in the modern
heating system there heat is produced all long the heating coils underlaid in the floor.
Product History
During this period there The development of Discovery of several trade Development in

people mostly used the Greeks and the adopting several heating electric heating introduces

Initial Design Brief
After the initial research on types of heaters and its different application and method of usage I had
come up with the initial design brief on basis of which I would be narrowing down my research and
coming up with a more specific design brief.

Factors Affecting Heating
Loss of Heat
The benefit of generating heat even after the heater has been switched off, due to the
heated coil.
The detriment of using this type of heating is that it will take a long time to heat the
heating fluid and increase the price of the heater.
Thermostat
Heating Fluid
Holding Strip
Insulation
Stip Heater
The benefit of using an oil filled radiator heater is for safety and a
silent operation as there are no moving parts like a fan, in a convection heater.
The running costs are high as it takes a longer time to heat the oil thus
to generate heat.
Factors Affecting Heating
Methods of Electric Heating
Ceramic Heaters: Ceramic heaters are space heaters that generate heat by passing electricity through heating
wires embedded in ceramic plates. The plates heat aluminium baffles, and a fan blowing across the baffles heats the air
Ceramic heater’s are cheap to manufacture thus low cost for the buyer as well.
As the heating coil is directly in contact with ceramic material it transfers its energy, thus life of the coil is
also extended.
The ceramic in which the wire is embedded is electrically non-conducting and has a very good absorption
and emission characteristics which allow it to radiate or emit heat, increasing its efficiency.
The Ceramic heaters are unsafe for use as the coils are usually exposed
The running costs depends on the room size, bigger the room longer it takes to heat
Factors Affecting Heating
Size of the room and insulation
Measure the length and width of the room to determine total square
footage and multiply according to the insulation in the room.
A room that is 10 feet wide by 13 feet wide with an 8 foot ceiling and
Average insulations =
10 x 13 = 130 then 130 x 10 watts/per square foot = 1300 Watts

Axial Fan: are those in which
the air flows axially through the
blades.
Propeller fans
Tube axial fans
Forward-curved blades
The blades in this type of fan are fixed and the tips are
tilled to the direction of rotation, volume of air delivered is the
highest
Backward-curved blades
The tips of blade is curved backward, opposite to the
direction of rotation this results in medium specific speed
applications-- high pressure, medium flow applications.
Straight Blades
The blades have no curvature and produce greater noise
the fans have higher speeds and low volumes of air are
transferred.
Factors Affecting Heating
Thermostat
A thermostat is a device for regulating the temperature of a
system so that the system's temperature is maintained near a
desired setpoint temperature.

Making the

?
Keep in mind
? that the air vents should not be blocked which would cause major electrical problems
?
.The heater
? should be easy to Disassemble and Assemble, for cleaning purpose
?
The safety
? of the heater is very important. There should not be any part of the heating element which might
be exposed.
Design Brief
To design a convection fan room/space heater keeping in mind cost effective, safety, efficiency,
and easy cleaning. The heater should perform the primary function of heating well, and secondary
functions should be looked there after.

be pushing out air which is heated in the center
Exposed heating coil when blades are stationary

distributing the heat around the user
Simple table top design
Illustrated Concept-2
This heater has a ceramic heating coil and a Centrifugal fan which blows the air in through the
bottom of the heater, the Ceramic heater then heats the air and is then thrown towards the tapered
end of the exit. Due to the tapered shape the hot air gets accumulates, and through convection
heats up the fresher air being pushed up. Thus increasing the efficiency of the heater.
Control Unit
Ceramic Heater The cold air is first sucked in from the lower
vents by the Centrifugal fan which is then
heated by the Ceramic heater. The heated air
Metal Plate to direct air flow then moves towards the tapered exit where
Centrifugal Fan earlier heated air already exists. This causes
Cleaning in the corners might be a problem the air exiting the heater to become hotter
and finally exits through the vents
Restricted outlet of air
Outer Thermoplastic Casing
Single outlet of hot air
This design has three outlets to dissipate the heat and the unwanted outlets can be blocked allowing the hot air
to be exited from other outlet.
