Backup Content Database and Site

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services uses a database to store and manage site content. Just as each virtual server can host multiple top-level Web site, each virtual server can rely on multiple content databases to store site content. To take the backup of the site successfully follow these steps.

To back up a content database by using Central Administration
1. Identify the content database of WSS site from Central admin. 1.1, Start -> Central Administration > Application Management >Content Databases 1.2, Select Web application and find database name. 2. Open SQL server management studio and select the Database identified in previous step. 3, Right click database → properties → options → Db-read only → False. 4, From properties → select path of the mdf and ldf files. 5, Copy both files.

To back up a site using stsadm command
1. Start -> run -> cmd. 2, Type cd\ -> press enter key. 3, Type cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN 4, Type stsadm.exe -o backup -url <url of the site> -filename <filename.dat> 5, Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN , there you can find the .dat file ie. the backup file of the site.

6, Go to c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories 7, Copy the folder with your sites port number. 8, Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\ 9, Copy Templates folder.
