IRAN: Offer of Oil and Relief for Hurrican Katrina

Q: What comment does the U.S. have regarding the offer of the Iranian .
government to provide oil and other relief for Hurricane Katrina?

9 We have seen these media reports of Iranian offers of assistance for

Hurricane Katrina. We have not received any formal offer of such
assistance through other channels of communication.

9 We appreciate the outpouring of condolences and offers of assistance

we've received from around the world. No offers of assistance have
been rejected, and those U.S. agencies involved in the relief effort will
continue to evaluate these offers in light of what's needed at this time.

Q: Wouldn't U.S. sanctions prohibit receiving assistance from the

1
Iranian government?

Though I'mnot going to speculate on what decisions would be made

regarding the relief effort for Hurricane Katrina, I would note that
waivers exist for the provision of humanitarian assistance between the
U.S. and Iran.
