ABOUT AIESEC and SLAP

AIESEC is the world’s largest student-run organization with a history of over 60 years and more than 50,000 members in 110 countries and territories. It provides an international platform for young people to develop their leadership potential through unique opportunities such as global internships. WHAT IS SLAP?
SLAP - Second Language Acquisition Program SLAP is AIESEC Sydney’s newest project to kick-start in Semester 2, 2011. We aim to provide students with an on-campus opportunity to learn a language of their choice through an innovative, authentic approach. Languages offered in Semester 2, 2011:    Spanish French Japanese (subject to demand)

Mission statement: With SLAP we hope to establish an extra-curricular learning program at the University of Sydney campus, enriching student life and increasing cultural awareness, while providing an affordable and quality firsthand teaching program. The classes will be small, allowing for a large amount of direct interaction with the teachers, who live and breathe their language and are passionate about teaching and learning the Australian culture. Cultural events such as dance classes will complement these language classes, thus producing a well rounded cultural and educational program.

II. SO WHY CHOOSE SLAP? 1. We know all about your hectic life
We are also students, so we understand how difficult it is to fit in extra commitments into your busy lives. At SLAP, we make learning a language much more convenient for you with:  Flexible schedules We aim to tailor our class times around your hectic timetable. Classes are just 1 hour Mon-Thurs, so you can attend SLAP during your breaks! You will only need to attend 2 hours of class a week to get maximum benefit out of the program. There will be multiple classes available per day each week to make sure you won’t miss out.

In addition, SLAP’s instructors will be available every Friday if you want extra help or just want to practice your language speaking skills. Please note this is optional for you to come and best of all it will be FREE!  Convenient on-campus location Save time and spending money on transport with us, by learning a language right on main campus (rest assured, by ‘convenient on-campus location’, we do not mean Bosch)!

2. We cater to anyone, no matter what your language needs are
        Do you need to learn basic language skills for an overseas trip? Do you want to become more employable? Do you need a refresher on a language you have studied before? Do you want to learn more about a particular culture/lifestyle? Do you need help with language coursework at uni? Do you want to be able to watch foreign films without subtitles? Do you find amusement in confusing people by casually talking to them in a foreign language? Do you want to impersonate a tourist in Sydney?

In all seriousness: no matter what your situation is if you want to learn a language SLAP will be perfect for you

3. Our quality instructors are enthusiastic, native speakers
They always say that the best way to learn a language is to actually go overseas and live as a local for a least a couple of months. For most of us, as students, we don’t have the luxury of time or the budget to afford this. With SLAP, you don’t have to go overseas to learn a language from the locals – we bring the native speakers to Australia to teach you! You will be taught by young people who are very approachable and extremely enthusiastic and passionate about sharing their language and culture with you. Instructors and curricula will also be thoroughly reviewed by the SLAP team so you can be assured of quality!

4. You will get personalized, individual attention
Classes are small with only 5-8 people per class; so there will be lots of interaction between you and instructor as well as amongst your classmates On top of that, SLAP will be have additional classes on Friday and it’s totally up to you if you want to come along. These additional classes will be YOUR chance to tell the instructor what YOU want to learn for focused language learning and practice to suit your needs.

5. We make learning a language as practical as possible.
Do you remember the hours upon hours you spent in high school studying a language? Do you remember any of it? Would you be able to cope if you went overseas to the country of the foreign language you studied? SLAP aims to make learning a language as practical as possible. There will be no rote-learning from a textbook. All materials are carefully prepared for your instructors to give you the best possible development of your language skills.

6. We offer a quality, comprehensive language program at affordable prices
Program duration 3 months (exactly 12weeks) Fee per month ($A) $70

We will ask you to pay us a $70 each month. We found it will be much easier you and for us if money is paid in 3 monthly installments rather than asking you to pay for each lesson every week. Please note that you will have to pay the refundable deposit fee of $40 upfront to secure your place because the course is going to fill up fast. This $40 deposit will be deducted from your first month’s installment. So technically you only have to pay around other language programs, this is a steal!

$8/lesson.

7. We offer a fun and relaxing environment with many social/cultural activities
At SLAP, we’ll bring you as much exposure to the language as possible by hosting lots of exciting and unique social and cultural events throughout the course. We believe the ultimate goal of running a language program is to help you be able to understand the language and its context and what better way is there than giving you a real taste of some of the unique aspects of Spanish, French, and Japanese culture?
