KAPUAS HULU-MALAYSIA TIMUR

Dwi Purwani1

ABSTRACT

Kapuas Hulu is a regency that lies on the border of West Kalimantan and East Malaysia. It is
rich in resources. But sadly, its current condition is contradictive to its rich supply of resources.
The regency is poor and very well undeveloped compared to East Malaysia. A major problem in
Kapuas Hulu is that its residents prefer to sell the goods that they have produced illegally to
East Malaysia. The reasons to sell their products illegally are high transportation costs needed
to sell products locally, tight competition in the domestic market in which their products are
unable to compete. Because the trade is done illegally, the government also don’t receive any
devisas from this illegal trade.
For the reasons above, the writer would like to propose a solution in solving the
problems that persist in Kapuas Hulu. The development and building of an active local market in
Kapuas Hulu, or to be more precise in Badau might lift the overall economic status of Kapuas
Hulu and Indonesia as a whole. The market will be an Indonesian traditional market based on
local wisdom and will sell various products that are unique and are special to Indonesia only.
The architecture will be given a special touch with a mixture of Indonesian taste and Dayak
values. Products will be separated according to type and category and the market will have
outdoor and indoor spacing.
This paper is meant to explain the benefits of having a developed local market in the
borders of Kapuas Hulu that will boost the economic status of Kapuas Hulu and stop illegal
trading activities of Kapuas Hulu residents.

Keywords: illegal trading, active local market, local wisdom.
