Lesson Plan – Heather McGee Unit/Topic: Microorganisms Key Learning Area: Life and Living, Band 3 Date

: 19th May 2011 Year Level: 8/9

LESSON OUTCOME:
(Key Knowledge and Skills students should achieve in the lesson taken from relevant curriculum documents.) LL 3 Life and Living • explain some interactions between living things and between living things and their environment • explain the relationship between the structures of living things and the functions these structures perform SI 3.2 Investigating • make measurements and record their results in tables, graphs and other structured forms To understand the components of a microscope To understand how to safely prepare a microscope slide To understand how to use a microscope to view microorganisms

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time Introduction (Set): Before the lesson: Have the yeast solution made up and ready to go – add sugar to ensure they are dividing and moving (but don’t mention this because it will be next week’s lesson) Check if Cheryl wants to use the Science room – but will probably be working on discussion 12:50pm What did we do last lesson? • Microscope introduction • Bread making process Today we’re going to learn how to use the microscopes properly to have a look at some of the yeast we’ve been talking about Ascertaining understanding from previous lessons, and introducing the outcomes for this lesson. Teaching Approaches

Time Main Content: 1:00pm Discuss on the board how to make a slide, with diagrams Make one slide myself with all students watching Divide students into groups of two for each microscope Have students make their own slide and use it to look down the microscope Emphasise points Bruce made on Monday about safely using the microscope Draw in their science book what they’re seeing Write some basic observations Are the yeast moving? Are the yeast dividing? Does this mean they’re alive? 1:20pm While they are using the microscope, show videos of yeast moving http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GchN1TnC4cE And yeast budding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcNEfUnEt_g

Scaffolding by preparing a slide myself first Students complete hands-on activity

Scientific diagrams Introducing students to making scientific observations

Use of ICT - Presentation in a visual form as another way to assist student learning

Conclusion: Praise them on good work, being sensible and safe etc. Next week we will be looking at what yeast need to stay alive
