Thank you for your letters to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and
for taking time to speak with me regarding the storage of samples from the former Exide
facility residential cleanup efforts on the Stringfellow site. We acknowledge and respect
your concern and would like to assure you that the storage of the samples at the
Stringfellow site does not pose a health or safety risk to your community.
Since the receipt of the City’s initial letter (dated June 17), the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) conducted a thorough inspection of the
storage containers and all related documentation. DTSC will share and respond
appropriately to any of the findings in the US EPA’s report.
It is DTSC’s mission to protect people and the environment from toxic harm. Although
we are confident that the storage of these samples is legal and meets both of these
goals, we recognize the sensitivity of this matter in light of the long history of
environmental injustices that Jurupa Valley’s residents have experienced. DTSC aims
to serve the community in a responsible, helpful, and expeditious manner by being
responsive to their concerns. To that end, we are working toward a solution to address
the community concerns, including those of the City of Jurupa. Discussions with and the
participation of all stakeholders will be sought once a suitable solution is formulated to
address the storage of samples.
Once again, thank you for your letter to DTSC expressing your concerns. We want to
reiterate our commitment to public health, protection of your community, and look
forward to working collaboratively with you and your City regarding this matter. We
remain available to answer any further questions.
Sincerely,
