European Humanitarian volunteer programme September 2011 to September 2012

The European Humanitarian Volunteer Programme is a new project being launched in June 2011 to build humanitarian talent, capacity and European solidarity. It forms part of the pilot projects being part-funded by the European Union to contribute to the establishment of a European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps (EVHAC) as enshrined in the Lisbon Treaty. This one year programme is a unique opportunity for Europeans to effectively contribute to international humanitarian programmes and gain hands-on experience in the humanitarian sector. It is designed to enable participants to develop the necessary skills in order to launch a career in humanitarian operational management or logistics.

How does it work? The European Humanitarian Volunteer Programme combines structured, sectorleading training workshops and self-study with coached field deployments. As a European Humanitarian Volunteer, you will have the option to apply for either Stream 1: Project Officer, focused on building humanitarian operational management skills, or Stream 2: Logistics Officer, focused on developing humanitarian logistics skills. You will undertake either one or two field deployments (see Information Pack for more details) with one of the humanitarian agencies participating in the project (see list below) where you will be based in one of the agencies’ field programmes in a humanitarian context, often in challenging and insecure environments. You will train with humanitarian professionals who will act as your coaches to facilitate the development of the skills required for either humanitarian operational management or logistics.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for talented individuals committed to long-term service in
the humanitarian sector, who can demonstrate outstanding people skills and the motivation to develop humanitarian operational management or logistics skills. The programme is only open to European citizens. The start date for this scheme is Monday 19th September 2011.

How do you apply?
Please apply via the website: www.savethechildren.org.uk/en/jobs.htm, job reference number 6475 The closing date for applications is Tuesday 28th June at midnight London time.
The European Humanitarian Volunteer Programme is being managed by Save the Children UK in coordination with Bioforce and NOHA (Network of Humanitarian Assistance) International Association of Universities. Other agencies currently involved in the project are Save the Children Denmark, Johanniter and Caritas Czech Republic. Other agencies may choose to join the project and host volunteers at a later date.
