MAURINE DICKEY

COUNTY COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, June 29, 2011

CONTACT: Jane Hensley O: 214-871-8888 M: 214-533-4492

Message from Maurine Dickey It is hardly a secret that the Dallas County Commissioners Court has had serious disagreements about important issues regarding accountability and transparency. That being said, my comments on Monday about the FBI’s activities should have been more soberly expressed. I believe and continue to believe that serious accusations need to be addressed and that the citizens of Dallas County deserve to have confidence that elected officials will act within the letter and spirit of ethics laws. Whatever the outcome of the investigation, the presence of FBI agents serves notice that no one is above the law. When my staff told me that agents were blocking access to Commissioner Cantrell’s office and then I saw them myself, I was led to believe that his office may have also been included in their search. This was the basis for my comments at that moment, but I should not have speculated without confirming that personally to the fullest extent possible. As individuals familiar with investigations know, law enforcement typically neither confirms nor denies speculation. ###
