“God created human beings in His own image and likeness” – this makes us equal in the eyes of God. He gave us rights, freedom, and dignity which are inherent in human life and equal in every person but sometimes, we tend to step out of our boundaries and break the equality among us thus, we commit violations. An example for this is “Human Rights Violation”. Human rights are the power to do, perform, acquire, and achieve all that is necessary to reach man’s dignity and perfection. These rights are demands of human nature and the roots of these are to be found in every human being’s dignity. Standing upon one’s dignity, deprivation or abuse of human rights often leads to conflict, and conflict typically results in human rights violations. We could not deny the fact that violation of human rights is rampant nowadays and we have to find ways on how to eradicate such violations. The purpose of this documentation is to cite incidents where human rights are violated, analyze these incidents and cite possible solutions in minimizing, if not eradicating such violations through the use of the cycle of Christian Praxis.
INCIDENT REPORT NO. 1
What: 39-year old Romeo Libona raped a minor. Who: a 6-year old child, now 16 years old. (name not stated) Where: Lambunao, Iloilo When: No specified date. (starting when the child was just 6 yrs. old until her teenage yrs.- 2009) Full Story: Authorities arrested a wanted fugitive accused of raping a minor. And it was not just any other “regular” rape case nor “regular” rape suspect. The charged crime was reported to have repeatedly occurred in a span of ten years. Finally captured by virtue of an arrest warrant was 39 year-old Romeo Libona of Cabangaan, Badiangan, Iloilo. In a report, The News Today (TNT) gathered that a total of seven counts of rape await the accused. He has since been subject of manhunt by intelligence operatives. Yet for the longest time, he has successfully eluded authorities until his arrest in Badiangan. Investigators now know that among his previous hide-out was a ‘safehouse’ in Roxas City in Capiz province. Romeo apparently took the chance of visiting his mother as civilian informants tipped off the Regional Intelligence Office (RIO) of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 6. With the arrest thereafter easily made, the accused Romeo is now behind bars and set to be turned over to the proper Court. Romeo’s victim is a native of Lambunao, Iloilo. TNT learned that the victim made a confession of the sexual abuse saying she recalled the first incident when she was only
six years old. With nobody then in the know, the victim told authorities of the repeated instances that continued until her teenage years. She is now 16 years old. Source: http://www.thenewstoday.info/2009/05/20/intel.operatives.capture.wanted.romeo.in.rape .of.minor.html Screenshot:
Rape especially child rape is a taboo in our society. In this case, the child was raped by an adult named Romeo. Probably, the cause of this incident is due to the man’s desire for sexual pleasure. Romeo is looking for something that could satisfy his sexual desire and he found fulfillment through raping the 6-year old child which is absolutely unacceptable. The worst thing is that it happened not only once but several times for the span of 10 years. It is very clear the child’s rights had been violated.
Pope John Paul XXIII made a list of human rights in his encyclical, Pacem in Terris. One of the rights he included in the list was the right pertaining to moral and cultural values which states that every human being has the right to be respected and to have a good name. In the child’s case, she was raped. It was without her consent so it means she did not want it at all. The rape incident might have caused trauma to the child and her name was probably stained due to this. The rapist (Romeo) did not respect the child as a human being. He had deprived the child of having the right to be respected and it ruined the child’s good name.
As a Christian, we must stop doing this unacceptable behavior. We should give due respect to other people and avoid destroying their good name.
In order for us to avoid this kind of unacceptable behavior, we should know how to control our sexual desires. We should set boundaries to ourselves. To do this, we must respect the rights of everyone around us and help them maintain their good name in our society.
