OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. Successfully understand the components of a literary essay. Analyze and comprehend the ideas that are presented in the reading, “The Story of My Body.” Successfully compose an essay similar to the style of Cofer’s in “The Story of My Body.” Effectively work in groups with other classmates.

STANDARDS ELA10RL1, ELA10RL2, ELA10RL5, ELA10W1, ELA10W2, ELA10C1, and ELA10LSV1 INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS, MATERIALS, OR TOOLS NEEDED Copy of “The Story of my Body” by Judith Ortiz Cofer

LESSON OUTLINE 1. Teacher gives a discussion/lecture about the elements of literary essay and talk about Judith Ortiz Cofer. 2. Class will then read “The Story of My Body” in class. 3. In groups, students will discuss the essay. They will complete a membership grid (attached) that will display the following topics: skin, color, size, and looks. The goal of this activity is for students to relate and connect to the essay as well as compare their “story” to their group members. 4. Class will come together as a whole to discuss the outcomes of the groups. ASSIGNMENT Homework (on their own) – compose an essay using Cofer’s essay as a model (This assignment is to be turned in at the end of the week).
