McCATTY RESUME

Returns for 3rd campaign, 2nd full season, as Nationals pitching coach...since concluding 9-year big league career as
a pitcher, is in 16th season as a pitching coach at the professional level...in 2010, his staff posted 1,068 strikeouts
and just 515 walks, both marking the best single seasons in club history (2005-present)...4.13 ERA and .266 BAA in
2010 were 2nd in club history behind only the 2005 Nationals...over last 2 seasons (2009-10), has mentored young
Nationals staff that has included 17 different rookies making 278 appearances/128 starts...joined Washington’s big
league staff as pitching coach on June 2, 2009, after serving the frst 2 months of the season in the same role with
Triple-A Syracuse...replaced Randy St. Claire as Nationals pitching coach...upon taking job, guided Nationals staff to
45-67 (.402) record and 4.69 ERA, as opposed to 14-36 (.280) mark and 5.69 ERA posted in season’s frst 50 games...
spent 3-plus seasons (2006-09) as Nationals’ Triple-A pitching coach...began coaching career with a 7-year stint with
DET that culminated upon being appointed Tigers pitching coach in 2002...during ‘02 season, worked with a young
staff that included Jeff Weaver and Mike Maroth and fnished ranked favorably with 11 complete games (3rd in AL),
463 walks (5th-fewest in AL) and 163 home runs (5th-fewest in AL)...enjoyed a 3-year term (2003-05) as pitching
coach for Triple-A Ottawa in the BAL organization...from 1989-91, spent 2 seasons broadcasting OAK games and one
season as a baseball announcer for ESPN.

PLAYING CAREER

Went 63-63 with 5 saves and 3.99 ERA in 221 games/161 starts during 9-year (1977-85) career with the Athletics...
tallied 3 double-digit win seasons...won 11 games in 1979, then claimed 14 victories in both 1980 and ‘81...posted
fnest campaign in 1981...joined Mike Norris, Rick Langford and Matt Keough on vaunted A’s starting staff...fnished
14-7 with 2.33 ERA (credited with AL-leading 2.32 ERA due to stat formula used) and 16 complete games in just 22
starts in 1981...with 84 points/6 frst-place votes, fnished 2nd in the 1981 AL Cy Young Award voting behind only
MIL’s Rollie Fingers (126 points/22 frst-place votes)...14 wins in ‘81 tied for big league lead, and .211 batting average
against paced all AL starting pitchers...ranked 2nd in complete games...in 2 post-season starts in 1981, went 1-1 with
a 4.38 ERA...went the distance, allowed one run on 6 hits, to earn the win in Game 2 of the ALDS at KCR...took the
loss in Game 2 of the ALDS at NYY, allowing 5 runs in 3.1 innings...in 1980, ranked 9th in the AL by allowing only 8.2
hits per 9.0 innings pitched...signed with OAK as amateur free agent in ‘73.

Steven Earl McCatty...graduated from Troy (MI) High School in 1972...was All-League, All-Detroit North and All-Oakland
County baseball player...also played basketball...attended Macomb (MI) Community College...served as technical con-
sultant for Disney movie “Angels in the Outfeld”...enjoys golfng and fshing...son, Shane, is a right-handed pitcher and
was selected by the Nationals in the 34th round of 2009 First-Year Player Draft and currently plays in Washington’s
system...sister, Mary McCatty, was a Rockette in New York City for 7 years.
