Materials and Methods The study is to be carried out in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria using as many as 20 African giant

rats captured alive within Samaru village in Zaria. The rats will be trapped using locally made metal cage traps and then transferred to standard laboratory rat cages in the Gross Laboratory of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy. Prior to examination, the rats will be fed sweet potatoes and groundnut and given water ad libitum. The rats will be euthanized using chloroform through inhalation. The sex of each rat will be noted and after which they will be weighed individually using an electronic balance with sensitivity of up to 0.01 g. The body weights will be recorded in grams. The rat will be placed on dorsal recumbency with the extremities stretched out. A mid-ventral incision extending from the base of the neck to the perineum will be made in order to reflect skin on the ventrum. A careful dissection through the muscles on the neck will be made to expose the thyroid gland. Its location will be observed in situ in relation to surrounding structures and then organ will be exteriorized and then its weight will be measured using a sensitive electronic balance with a sensitivity of 0.001g. Other anatomical features such as the shape, color and dimensions will be taken. The dimensions are to be taken using a micrometer screw gauge. Thereafter, the organs will be preserved in 10% formalin for histological examination.

In order to locate the adrenal glands, a mid ventral laparatomy will be done. The organs will be observed in situ in relation to surrounding structures and then exteriorized. Its weight will then be taken as already described and recorded. Other anatomical features including the shape, color

Histological sections of the organs at 5µm thickness will be cut and stained using Haematoxylin and Eosin . With the aid of a light microscope. . The histological structure of the organs is to be studied using routine histological techniques. the stained sections will be viewed and then the microscopic structures of the organs will be observed and then images of observed structures will be captured using a digital camera.and dimensions will be taken and then the organs will be preserved in 10% formalin for histological examination.
