APPENDICES INDEX OF MONUMENTS

The splendid monuments and gardens of the Mughal emperors represent one of the pinnacles in world architecture. The inception of Mughal architecture during the first half of the 16th century in northern India, then known as Hindustan, and its development over the next 200 years can only be explained within the context of a supremely powerful dynasty which took particular delight in investing substantially in grandly scaled citadels, palaces, mosques, tombs and gardens. As the Mughal throne passed uninterruptedly from father to son, this sustained constructional tradition resulted in an impressive series of buildings and garden resorts, many of which survive to this day as testaments to the aesthetic refinement and seemingly unlimited financial resources of their royal patrons.
