Reading Module Module 1

A mother sparrow had made her nest in a corn field. She had five tiny baby sparrows in her nest. The baby sparrows were too young and did not know how to fly. Every day the mother sparrow would go out to get food for the baby sparrows. Before leaving the nest she would tell her babies You must tell me if the farmer talks anything about the corn. One day after she left, the farmer visited the field with his son. As he passed the nest, the young birds heard him tell his son, The corn is ripe now, go to the village and ask your friends to come tomorrow and help us cut the corn. The young sparrows told their mother what the farmer told his son. When she heard this, she said, don t be afraid my children. Our nest will be safe, if the farmer waits for his friends to come and cut the corn. The next day the mother went out again to get food. The farmer came with his son to the field soon after she left. As he passed by the nest, the little birds heard him say, None of your friends have come, we must call our relatives from the next village tomorrow and cut the corn. The young sparrows were again frightened and told their mother what the farmer told his son. When she heard this, she again said, don t be afraid my children. Our nest will be safe, if the farmer waits for his relatives to come and cut the corn. The farmer came with his son the next day after the mother sparrow left. This time the little birds say, The corn is too ripe now, we must cut it. Let us cut the corn today. The mother sparrow had just returned and when she heard the farmer say this, she told baby sparrows that they should leave the nest immediately. When the baby sparrows asked her why, she said We must go now, because, WHEN A MAN DECIDES TO DO HIS WORK HIMSELF, IT WILL SURELY BE DONE. She moved to another nest with her babies. The farmer and his son began cutting the corn the same day.
