plus my target market is small runs. money. or space to set up a spray booth. and color. The main thing would be getting the correct translucent inks. finger prints are free . I specify size. wheel base. Are full bleeds an option with screen printing on skate decks? If so. you need a minimum of a clear layer just to keep moisture out of the board.. When I order the wood. the wood shops are better equipped to properly spray the boards on their end. is it a realistic option to coat to put down some kind of base coat? All the wood I use is ordered from manufactures in the USA. . how accessible is it to the smaller printer? It can be done but I have not tried it... how does it differ from non-bleed printing? It can be done. I tend to make a mess when I print boards and full bleed which adds to the amount of finger prints you will get on the top of your board . I have only done it on a few decks. but a lot of skate decks do! My personal preference is having the wood grain be part of the design so I prefer screening decks that are not full bleed. the board will break down a lot faster.. I am not ready to tackle that at this point. I don't have the time. shape. As far as starting with an un-coated deck. I usually try and tape off the screen to eliminate the amount of ink you are pushing through the areas that do not come in contact with the board. as a minimum clear it. Is the base coat applied by the manufacturer or the printer? If a printer is starting with an un-coated deck. the FBI doesnt have them. I enjoy doing 15-25 deck runs and take business that some of the other shops may not want to do. are making your own deck. if you dont have a moisture barrier. Is the four color process that achieves a full color image something that can be done when printing skateboards? If so.

I think we did 3 different runs of those and now I am doing the Lost Bowl decks for him.. Those are a lot fun.... I am working with Dan Tag and Bernie O'dowd on the Crappy Skates decks.. . I want to do decks with shapes and screened graphics only. There are a ton of decks I love. those are going to be killer.. Thanks for giving us a little insight on the printing process. Who does Shipyard primarily print decks for? I do a decent amount of small orders for people that just want to ride their own boards. and Gutter Bat are three of my "modern" favorites. I told 5 or 6 of my buddies to draw something up . Pocket Pistols put out a lot of great screen printed decks. I have done a couple orders for the Projeckts Skate shop in Jersey and just placed another order for wood for them this week. but those two will be the ones I spend some cash on one day to have again ... Patrick Lowery has been my customer of the month a few months running now. I support the little guys 95% of the time. The PPS Rattus.. The only stipulation is it has to be nautical. They are the only "bigger" company I support on a regular basis.Do you have an aI/-time favorite screen printed skate deck? All time favorite .. I also have about 5 Shipyard designs in the works for summer / fall of this year.. The first decks I did for someone else was Pat's Hell's Satans decks. Future plans are to screen a portion of the boards for my brother Mike's company Never Again. I was and still am a fan of the Santa Cruz / SMA boards of the mid to late 80's.from what I have seen so far. The 5th Natas panther graphic that Justin Forbes drew is up there too.
