surface algorithms attempt to determine the lines, edges, su rfaces or volumes that are visible to an observer). It is an image space algorit hm. The z â Buffer is a simple extension of the frame buffer. A frame buffer is used to store the attributes (intensity or shade) of each pixel in image space. The z-buffer is separate buffer used to store value of z coordinate, or depth, of e very pixel in image space. In use, the depth or the z value of a new pixel to be written to the frame buffer is compared to the depth of that pixel stored in th e z-buffer. If the comparison indicates that the new pixel is in front of the p ixel stored in frame buffer, then the new pixel is written to the frame buffer a nd the z-buffer updated with the new z value. If not, no action is taken. Concep tually, the algorithm is a search over x, y for the largest value of z(x, y).
