The Honorable Harry Reid Majority Leader of the United States Senate 522 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 The Honorable John Boehner Speaker of the United States House of Representatives H-232 The Capitol Washington, DC 20515 Dear Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Boehner: We implore you to oppose the proposed cuts which would bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding and cut women off from lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, annual exams, birth control, HIV testing, sex education, and STI testing and treatment. In New York State 223,148 women depend on Planned Parenthood for high quality health care. It would be a true detriment to our constituents if the United States Congress decided to eliminate this access. Three million Americans rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for primary and preventative care. These centers serve as the sole source of health care for many New York residents and delivers health services to rural communities and low-income individuals. Every year doctors provide affordable contraception for nearly 2.5 million patients, perform nearly one million cervical cancer screenings, carry out 830,000 breast exams, and execute nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections which include a half million HIV tests. Decreasing or eliminating federal funds for health providers such as Planned Parenthood would have severely damaging effects on these Americans. In attacking Planned Parenthood, the House Republican leadership has launched a morally indefensible assault on the millions of Americans who rely on Planned Parenthood for high quality primary and preventative health care. But if proposed legislation, such as Rep. Mike Pence's (R-IN) H.R.217, were passed, it would result in millions of women losing their primary and preventive health care. These bills are antithetical to fiscal responsibility and quality health care. Every dollar invested in family planning saves nearly $4 down the line. The effort to bar Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funding will do nothing to reduce the deficit since it is not a budget cut. It is merely a measure that prohibits Planned Parenthood from receiving funding to provide preventive health care.

Our constituents and people all across New York are struggling to access affordable health care. Restricting their ability to receive care from providers they trust and whose service they can afford is unacceptable. Now is the time to focus on creating jobs d growing the economy, not decreasing access to adequate and affordable health care.
