By virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, I do hereby issue this proclamation congratulating

U2 3600 TOUR DAY IN PITTSBURGH July 26, 2011 WHEREAS, in September of 1976, a 14-year-old student by the name of Larry Mullen went on a search for classmates interested in starting a small band. Paul Hewson (Bono), David Howell Evans (The Edge), and Adam Clayton all answered the call. The group of young students from Dublin, Ireland decided to name the band U2. This marked the beginning of their journey to becoming one of the most successful international bands in history; and WHEREAS, over the last 30 years, U2 has remained one of the most popular and “reinventive” groups in the world. The sound, the beat, and the dynamics of their music has changed time and time again, but their fans and popularity remains unmatched and has continued to evolve. U2 has sold more than 150 million albums and has won more Grammy awards than any other band; and WHEREAS, since the early 1980s, the members of U2 have utilized their platform to collaborate with other musicians, artists, celebrities, and politicians to address issues concerning poverty, disease, and social injustice. Their charity work has notably been recognized by the United Nations, the Pope and the President of the United States; and WHEREAS, in addition to all that U2 has achieved with their charitable work, Paul Hewson (Bono) co-founded (Product)Red in 2006, which raises funds to fight the devastation of AIDS in Africa. (Product)Red monies are also used in the Global Fund’s fight against Tuberculosis and Malaria. Locally, the concept inspired (Pittsburgh) Red project, which seeks to bring awareness to the HIV/AIDS virus. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Luke Ravenstahl, as Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh welcome the U2 3600 World Tour to Pittsburgh for the 9th time. We are honored that Pittsburgh has been chosen for the last U.S. show of U2 3600, the highest grossing concert tour ever. I do hereby declare July 26, 2011 “U2 3600 Day” here in our most livable City of Pittsburgh.
