– I Semester Supplementary Examinations, September, 2008 PRODUCTION & OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (Industrial Engineering and Management) Time: 3hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ---

Max. Marks:60

1. a) Define plant layout? Explain combination layout and group layout with an example? b) Explain methods of selection of plant layout. 2. a) Explain MRP logic, inputs to MRP and outputs of MRP. b) Explain Aggregate planning strategies and costs involved in each strategy. 3. Consider a three period model where regular and overtime production are used. The production capacities for the three periods are as follows. Production Capacity ( Units ) Period 1 2 3 Regular 15 15 20 Over time 10 0 15

The Production cost per unit is Rs 5 for regular production and Rs 10 for overtime production. The holding and shortage cost per unit /period are given by Rs 1 and Rs. 2 respectively. The demand units for the three periods are 20, 35 and 15 respectively. Determine the production cost for optimum production plan using transportation algorithm. 4.a) Find the sequence that minimizes the total elapsed time ( in hours ) required to complete the following jobs on three machines M1, M2 and M3 in the order M1 M2 M3. Contd …2.,
