Chompʼs technology powers the most advanced search engine for native and web apps across the worldwide iOS and Android markets. The metrics outlined in this report provide insight into app search trends across iOS and Android using Chompʼs on-device search functionality within the US during the month of March. Chomp for Android launched on February 28, 2011. Android and iOS metrics included in this edition of App Search Analytics refers to data collected March 1 - 31. App Search Analytics
Top Queries
App queries broke an iOS record, driving 91% of all searches for app function. 14% of all Android queries were for a specific app name. ʼProductivityʼ was the third most popular query on both Android and iOS.

App Monetization
Android and iOS share the inverse effect when it comes to price points within their respective markets. With 64% of all apps costing $0 on Android and only 36% on iOS, free apps continue to win the app download race.

Best in Category
“Games” earns the top category spot on Android while “Entertainment” continues to reign supreme on iOS. “Utilities” and “Lifestyle” earn the #2 positions while “medical” lands in last on both platforms.

March Spotlight
Usage Trends by Time of Day
App search activity peaked between 6-8 PM PST with a steady increase in volume throughout an average day in March. Top searches during peak hours were “free apps”, “free games”, “productivity” and “utilities”.

Usage Trends by Day of Week
Traffic pattern inconsistencies appear on six of seven days when comparing both platforms. Snapshot: Thursday yields the highest and lowest app search volume day with a side-by-side glance at Android and iOS.

The Chomp 55
Find out which iPhone and Android apps won the hearts and minds of Chomp users during March. 5 out of the top 10 ten Chomp 55 apps are paid for the second month in a row (iOS). Androidʼs top 10 does not feature a game.

Users demand function based search results. Only 13% of queries across iPhone, iPod and Android devices were for a specific app name. The most requested app name search on both platforms was “Facebook”.

95% of all Android Downloads were free. Free apps represent 64% in the US Android Market, leaving only 36% with an associated cost. This free to paid app ratio on iOS is the reverse - 36% free. Android users applied the ʻfreeʼ filter 10% of the time whereas 35% of all iOS queries were submitted with the ʻfreeʼ filter.

Roughly 36% of all apps within iTunes are free apps. 30% of apps are priced at $0.99 and a combined 18.8% within the $1.99 & $2.99 prices. Free app downloads held strong at 87.2%, down only .5% from February. Of the 367,111 active apps in iTunes, 15% represent games.

In March the “Games” category earned top honor with the most downloads. On Android, the “Games” and “Entertainment” categories make up 36.3% of all downloads vs. 28.4% in iTunes.

Android search traffic exceeded iOS by 54%.
The variation of app search traffic in March a mere 3.1% with the low occurring between 2 - 3am and the high between 7 - 8pm PST. During the 7-8pm hour, the most searched for term was “free apps”. The second most popular search term during that hour was “free”.

The #1 search term during the peak 6PM hour was “free apps”.
The fewest searches occurred between 2 - 3am and the high between 6 - 7pm PST. The first spike of the day took place between the hours of 11am to noon. The 1 - 9pm timeframe accounted for 40% of all traffic. The second most popular search term during peak traffic hours was “free games”.

Search traffic highs and lows vary across platforms
Five out of the seven week days showed high variation in traffic. Androidʼs peak traffic day was Thursday, raking in 17% of search volume. App search on iOS peaked with 18% of traffic on Sunday.
