… a message from the president of MLK Committee…

Dr. Jim Baber Hello,
It seems so long ago Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood before a divided nation and preached his vision for a new America - one that valued the content of character and not the color of our skin. The progress we have made as a society is nothing short of remarkable, and it is in these times we must remember there is still work to be done with our young people. On Friday, January 13, 2012 during the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, The Martin Luther King Committee will present a select group of young ladies to the community at the first annual Martin Luther King Debutante Cotillion Ball. This elegant event will be held at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville, Ohio. Our Ohio Valley’s female business and community leaders will mentor the cross-cultural group with care. The debutantes will be provided with a four-month preparatory program for high school junior and senior girls. Emphasis focused on career planning, college selection, cultural enrichment, social graces and building self-esteem. In addition, issues related to the value of inner beauty and developing into well-rounded individuals are significant aspects of training. This experience will also provide an atmosphere for healthy

competitive fund-raising among the debutantes. The highlight of the debutantes’ training, preparation, and fundraising culminate in featuring the young ladies at the Debutante Cotillion Ball. We are indeed thankful for our fiscal sponsors that we may provide college scholarships as part of the program. While scholarships will be given to two other contestants, one contestant will be crowned the queen of the ball. The members of the Martin Luther King Association support, respect, and applaud the debutantes of the first annual cotillion as they “embark upon finer womanhood.” It is our duty to help shape tomorrow’s leaders by offering the lessons we’ve learned from yesterday and yet listening to their voices enough so they may shape tomorrow.
