Its hard to believe that the
summer is almost over, but it is.
While there are so many elements
to think about for back to school,
fashion is a very important one.
So what are some of the trends
that we will be seeing for this up-
coming school year? It depends
on whom you ask.
What is in style and fashion-
able is very much in the eyes of
the person wearing the clothes.
However, there are certain trends
that become popular every sea-
son. Making these trends match
your own unique style depends
on you. You can take what is
trendy for the season and mix and
match, and perhaps mix with
some past, favorite trends, and
make a style all your own. With
the multitude of options, you
truly can stand out from the
crowd.
For back-to-school looks, it
seems that we are seeing a sub-
dued, casual look for the season.
However, there is a bit of surprise
and sort of wildness with new
trends.
The grunge look from the 90s
is trying to make a comeback,
Angela Cocivera, owner of my
Girlfriends Boutique in Medford,
said.
I see a lot of beads, a lot of
chains, crosses, Suzanne Shee-
hen, owner of SIX Clothing store
in Haddonfield, said.
If the grunge look is not some-
thing that fits your style, there
are a lot of familiar trends that
have made a comeback.
Plaid and polka dots are big,
Cocivera said. I have also seen a
touch of lace.
For the person that likes to
dress up, the tailored look is back.
Ive been seeing a very tai-
lored look, Cocivera said. Suit
jackets with peplums, kind of like

Little
shelter,
big roar
Animal Welfare Association
aims to increase adoption numbers
for a chance at $100,000
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Voorhees Sun
Its the little shelter with a big
roar.
Thats the slogan of the Ani-
mal Welfare Association in
Voorhees as it takes part in a na-
tional competition for $100,000.
The contest, which runs
through Oct. 31, is run by the
American Society for the Preven-
tion of Cruelty to Animals.
Because it is such a small shel-
ter, it competes with larger shel-
ters by increasing the percentage
of its animals adopted out.
Kimberly McKeever, develop-
ment assistant at the Animal Wel-
fare Association in Voorhees, said
the shelter finished 22nd in a na-
tionwide contest and is now eligi-
ble for the $100,000 prize.
Were the little shelter with a
big roar, she said, noting it is
now competing against 49 other
shelters.
In order to stay in the running,
the shelter must adopt out 300
more animals than the number
adopted out in same time frame
last year, which was 500.
We want to win this so were
going to shoot for over 1,000, Mc-
Keever said.
The kickoff ceremony for the
drive is Aug. 6 and Aug. 7 at the
battle of the bands at Top Dog.
There will also be numerous off-
site adoption events.
McKeever said she is extreme-
ly confident her shelter will win.
She also said the association
has partnered with Comcast. The
cable company will give advertis-
ing for the shelter.
Betsy Ransome, director of
shelter services, is also extreme-
ly confident about the contest.
Im excited about it, she said.
To help expedite the process,
the shelter will waive the adop-
tion fee, making the adoption
process user-friendly to in-
crease turnover.
Ransome said the $100,000
would be used to save more ani-
mals and to provide spaying and
neutering clinics.
There would be no capital im-
provements made to the shelter.
This money would be directed
to helping the community, Ran-
some said, adding there would be
funding for a mobile spay and
neuter vehicle as well as a pro-
gram to trap, neuter and release
feral cats.
Thats a huge part of what we

do, she said.
Ransome also said the staff
talks to people with animals they
want to surrender and tries to
sort out their issues.
People can also post their ani-
mals on the virtual shelter online.
Our goal when we do that is to
keep the animal out of a shelter
environment, she said.
Andrew Gershman, volunteer
and outreach coordinator for the
shelter, said that every time a per-
son adopts an animal, it frees up
space to take in another.
I think its a great opportunity
for our shelter to be able to do a
wonderful thing which is adopt
and save more lives, Gershman
said of the prize. The money is
nice but the lives saved is even
better.
He said the money will also be
used to help set up a fund for spe-
cial animal care.
We get animals that require
extra care and that can put a
strain on operations, Gershman
said. Putting money aside specif-
ically for this purpose allows us
to take in more animals with spe-
cial needs.
McKeever said that because the
Animal Welfare Association is
one of the few no-kill shelters in
the area, people are less likely to
adopt.
Were really trying to create
that sense of urgency to come in
and adopt, she said. We really
want to get it out to the communi-
ty that there is an urgent need to
come and adopt from us.
Ransome said there is also an
extensive foster care program for
animals that are too young to sur-
vive on their own.
That program helps us com-
pete because we not only have the
physical shelter, we have this
whole extensive foster group that
creates space for us, she said.

In August of 1989, a small
group of Voorhees business
owners formed a local club to
promote business in the town-
ship. The Voorhees Business As-
sociation (VBA) was born.
The mission of the VBA is to
provide a forum for businessper-
sons and businesses in the area
to meet and to share and discuss
concerns and interests of a civic,
commercial, cultural, or eco-
nomic nature. The VBA also
seeks to facilitate a dialogue be-
tween the local business commu-
nity and elected officials and to
channel the energies and re-
sources of the business commu-
nity and elected officials into im-
proving Voorhees Township.
The VBA has also partnered
with our Economic Develop-
ment Committee to form the
Voorhees Business Retention
Task Force to help our local busi-
nesses continue to thrive.
In addition to providing an op-
portunity to network, the VBA
serves a charitable function by
providing scholarship funds to
Eastern Regional High School
and gifts and food for needy fam-
ilies over the holidays.
Young entrepreneurs and pro-
fessionals experience life in the
real world through the Take a
Student to Work exchange pro-
gram.
Over the last year, the VBA
membership has more than dou-
bled.
The next social event will be
the Third Annual VBA Barbe-
cue on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at
5:30 p.m. at the Wingate by Wyn-
dham, 1000 Laurel Oak Road.
Lunch meetings are held on the
third Wednesday of the month at

meeting will be on Sept. 21 at
noon.

MAYORS MESSAGE
VBA still going strong
Getting back
Only five weeks to school bells
S
peaking for parents everywhere, we say yahoo to news
that the new school year is only about a month or so
away. We need the break.
At The Sun, our back-to-school coverage is kicking off. We
have a series of stories planned
over the coming weeks to cover,
we hope, a lot of the issues sur-
rounding the new school year.
Well look at back-to-school
fashion, transition years, the
school districts online offer-
ings and more.
The final piece of the puzzle, for late this month, will be inter-
views with school superintendents. Well ask them about new
programs and policies in the district, schedule changes and, in
general, what parents and students need to know to get the year
started the right way.
But well probably miss a question that you have. Unless, you
send it to us now.
In the box accompanying this editorial, youll see a way to
email your question or questions directly to the editor inter-
viewing the superintendent and providing coverage of your
school district throughout the year. Type away, and let us know
what issues are on your mind.
Funding always is on everyones list whether youre a par-
ent, student, teacher or taxpayer. Has your favorite program
been cut? Are there new fees? Is there a new way for the public
to offer input on the budget process?
Or maybe you are wondering about test scores. Or changes to
a school building. Or, well, anything that you want to know to
get your young ones ready for the next grade.
We are in the process of setting up interviews now, so dont
delay.
Let us know what questions you have about the upcoming
school year, and well pass them along to those people who
should have the answers.
Raise your hand
Or just send an email with
back-to-school questions.

menswear, but not really. Just re-
ally leaning toward the tailored
look.
This fall season is about femi-
ninity, said Barbara Smedile, an
owner of Queen Bee Boutique in
Medford. Its all about the waist.
Pencil skirts, belted coats, curvy
dresses and long blossomy
sleeves are the latest trends for
fall.
Some people like to take a little
more risk when it comes to fash-
ion.
Bold colors, prints and pat-
terns are a main staple in their
closet, and they are not afraid of
stepping out of the boundaries of
fashion.
For those people, there are a
number of fun trends in for this
season.
I see a lot of bold, funky colors
and prints, Dawn Savuzzi, an
owner of Queen Bee Boutique,
said. A lot of eclectic clothes,
tulle, vintage clothing. A lot of
mixing styles.
Prints are very big for dresses
and tops, Sheehen said.
Feathers are big, earrings
headbands, Savuzzi said. Tinsel
for the hair is in. Its just long
thin tinsel pieces running
through the hair.
Also a huge trend in hair is the
feather hair extensions that can
be done at most hair salons and
start around $15 and go up.
The maxi skirt offers any style-
conscious girl the chance to be
bold and feminine. Maxi skirts
come in endless patterns, prints
and colors. They range in price
from $20 and up and can be found
at most clothing stores.
Not only is fashion about style,
but it is also about comfort. For a
comfortable, stylish look, a good
pair of skinny jeans and a top
works perfect.
Jeans are in, skinny jeans,
wide-leg, higher-waisted jeans,
Sheehen said. The big sweaters
with skinny jeans, short sweaters
with the wide-leg jeans. The
sweaters are way oversized, and
there is a lot of layering going
on.
Each year a new palette of col-
ors comes into season. This year
the colors are soft and romantic,
but pastels also are big.
Im seeing a lot of creams and
beiges, Sheehen said. Blue and
black combos are big also.
The crimson and mustard col-
ors are what I am seeing a lot of,
Cocivera said.
To cover all these styles up and
stay warm, a nice trench coat or
jean jacket is the perfect comple-
ment. Most trench coats start
around $50 and most jean jackets
$20.
For boys, denim will be a big
look this year. You will also see
the military look back in style,
skinny jeans with long shirts,
knitted winter hats, colorful
sneakers and wristwatches.
No matter what is in style for
the season, you determine your
own personal style. You make the
clothes; the clothes dont make
you.

AUGUST 3-9, 2011 THE VOORHEES SUN 9
A reminder that those student-
athletes who participate in foot-
ball and boys and girls soccer
are required to take the Impact
Concussion Baseline Test prior to
participation.
This includes incoming fresh-
men and any transfer students.
Those who have already taken
the online baseline impact test
during a previous school year at
Eastern do not need to take it
again.
The impact test is available on-
line.
Go to the Eastern Regional
website, www.eastern.k12.nj.us,
and click on Athletics, then
Forms.
Download the permission form
and testing instructions, then re-
turn the signed permission form
to the athletic trainer, or to the
athletic office once your son or
daughter has taken the test.
Please pay special attention to
all testing instructions to ensure
a valid test.
Any invalid tests may require a
re-test.
If you do not have access to the
Internet at home, contact Mr.
Christy to arrange a testing time
at school.
The baseline test is not intend-
ed to identify a current concus-
sion.
If your son or daughter has re-
cently suffered a concussion, has
not yet recovered or been cleared
by a physician for unrestricted
sports activities due to a previous
concussion, do not take the base-
line test.
Instead, notify the athletic
trainer or your physician for an
evaluation.
Please contact Mr. Christy at
784-4441 ext. 1277, or the athletic
office at ext. 1165, if you have any
questions.

Firefighter volunteers needed
The Voorhees Police Depart-
ment would like to send out this
safety message for the residents
and business owners in town.
We are approaching that time
of year when people break away
from the confines of their home
to enjoy the warmer tempera-
tures. Some may choose to mulch
garden beds around their proper-
ty, add topsoil, or add a brick
walkway to their yards. Some
people do this work themselves
and others hire landscapers to
complete the job. Either way,
Voorhees residents must be in-
formed that it is against the law
to dump or have dumped any-
thing onto the street in Voorhees.
This is in violation of Township
Ordinance 98.16 and Interference
with Transportation 2C: 33-14.
Every year at this time, the
Voorhees Township Police De-
partment gets numerous calls
about piles of topsoil, mulch, and
even piles of landscaping bricks
or block that have been left in the
street. Even if the pile is not
blocking traffic, its still against
the law.
The homeowner is responsible
to remove it immediately. If you
hired a contractor to do the work
and they left any debris in the
street, the homeowner and the
contractors supplier is responsi-
ble to remove the debris from the
roadway.
Simply stated, the streets in
Voorhees are designed for the
purpose of moving traffic, which
includes cars, trucks, motorcy-
cles, bicycles and the like.
Voorhees Police officers have a
right to issue citations for these
violations that occur on any
street in town.
Please be considerate when
having this type of work done on
your property and please do not
allow anyone to dump anything
on the street in front of your
home.
Police reminder: No dumping on the street
