In1983 Sunil Bharti Mittal entered the business of manufacturing push button telephones in alliance with Siemens In 1986, he incorporated Bhartii Telecom Limited and become the India s first company to manufacture push button telephones  It produced the country s first fax machines and cordless telephones Sunil Mittal won the bid to build cellular operations in delhi in 1992 In 1995, he incorporated the cellular operations as Bharti tele ventures and launched services in Delhi and extended to Himachal Pradesh  In 1999, Mittal acquired JT Holdings and extended the service to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh 

Bharti acquired control of Skycell communication in 2000 and extended the service to chennai. Bharti enterprises acquired Spice cell in Kolkatta in 2001. Bharti enterprises went public in 2002 and listed in both NSE and BSE. In 2003, the cellular operations were rebranded under the single Airtel brand. Bharti acquired Hexacomm in 2004 and extended its service to Rajasthan and in 2005 to Andaman & Nicobar. Airtel tried to acquire MTN for a whopping US $45bn deal but the talks ended without agreement. 

Airtel extended its service to Srilanka in 2009 and then to Bangladesh in 2010 In March 2010 Airtel acquired Zain, a Kuwait based telecom company for $9 bn and made its presence felt in the African continent. Now Airtel operates in 19 countries and it is the 5th largest in the world based on the number of subscribers. Airtel provides services in Mobile network, Wireless, Broadband, Landline and Satellite television.
