Alleviating Hunger in Africa

We have upcoming adult forum events that highlight work in Africa. See below and your August !nSpire for more information:

Last week we talked about nding strength within our own souls during difcult situations. This week as we look to the story in our Scripture, we nd another resource: The disciples struggled in their boat on the Sea of Galilee during a storm one night. They were t e r r i e d wh e n wh a t seemed to be a ghost began walking toward them on the water. Then they heard, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. When have you found courage from a friend, a teacher, or the Holy Spirit? What do you do to nd courage? Whistle a happy tune? Hold someone's hand? Say to those around you, "It will all be well?" Look this week for opportunities to nd courage in the community around you and to be someone elses courage for awhile.

NLOBE DEN HERREN

God of this beautiful earth, There are times when we dont know how to trust you. When life is uncertain and the waves are crashing around us, it is easy to think you have deserted us. Nudge us to look harder, Holy One, for your presence in the midst of the chaos. Help us to see you are with us, leading us in the chaos rather than around it. Amen. + SCRIPTURE READING
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning Jesus came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terried, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.

Matthew 14:22-33
Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

We are now in the Season after Pentecost, what we often refer to as Ordinary Time and so we enter into our theme: Tending the Garden of Your Soul, recognizing that most of our tending needs to be during those ordinary times. We live most of our lives in ordinary time, dont we? And yet the miracle of our lives is anything but ordinary. It is in our everyday living that we practice loving our neighbors, ourselves, and our God. How do you tend to your soul? How is your garden growing? For next week, read Psalm 133.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to us today. Thanks be to God!

A Welcoming Way of Communion at 9:30 AM

We celebrate that the tradition of the church has deep roots in the life of the Festival (9:30 am) worship service when we celebrate Communion. In the past an usher has released the congregation to proceed to the table. Starting in August we will invite people to come to the table to receive communion whenever they are ready. There will be no usher to release or direct you. The main reason we are making this change is for the sake of being welcoming. While we, in the United Methodist Church, practice that all people are welcome to receive the sacrament if they wish to experience the grace of God, many other churches do not. By welcoming all people to come as they desire rather than being ofcially released, our practice of coming to the table will reect our theology of welcoming. It may take a few months for us to get used to this way of doing things, but we know that you will be hospitable to one another during this time of transition, helping one another out and carrying on the tradition of being a welcoming and gracious community of faith.
