Atom

A basic unit of matter that consists of a dense, central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons.

Nucleus

The center of the atom, which contains the protons and neutrons. It comprises the atomic mass since the weight of and electron is negligible.

Proton

Positive(+) charged particles located in the nucleus of an atom. These define the atom as the atomic number and thus can not change in number for a given element.

Neutron

Neutral (o) charged particles found in the nucleus. These can change and when they do they determine the isotope of a given element..

Orbital

The shell surrounding the nucleus, which contains the electron. The number of shells in an element’s atom corresponds with period the element is in.

Electron

Negative (-)charged particle which moves around the atom in the orbital.
