TOPIC : ACTION OF ACID AND ALKALI ON LATEX Aim : To study the effects of acid and alkali on latex.

Problem Statement : How does latex coagulate and how can it be prevented from coagulating. Hypothesis : Acid will cause latex to coagulate while alkali will prevent it from coagulating. Variables : (i) Constant :Volume of latex (ii) Manipulated :Type of solution / presence of acid or alkali. (iii) Responding :Coagulation of latex Apparatus : Beakers, glass rod, dropper. Materials : Latex, ethanoic acid, ammonia solution. Procedure : 1) 20 cm latex is added to three beakers labeled A, B and C.

The rubber particles collide causing the protein membranes to break and the rubber molecules to combine with one another. 4) Latex in beaker C is stirred and the observing on the condition of the latex is recorded after one day. Observation : Beaker (A) Latex + ethanoic acid (B) Latex + ammonia solution (C) Latex Discussion : 1) Ethanoic acid contains hydrogen ions with positive charges which neutralize the negative charges one the rubber protein membrane.2) To beaker A. ethanoic acid is added drop by drop. The mixture is stirred and the observing on the condition of lateis recorded after 10 minutes. procedure (2) is repeated with ammonia solution. 3) To beaker B. Coagulate of latex .

Conclusion : .2) Ammonia solution contains hydroxide ions with negative charges. 3) Hypothesis is accepted. which neutralize any acid produced by bacteria in the latex.
