A menu of studio sessions About Ginger

I’m an educational consultant with ESSDACK, an educational service center in Hutchinson, Kansas who specializes in Project Based Learning, Technology Integration, Gifted and High-Ability Learners, and Creativity. I am formerly the Director of Turning Point Learning Center’s f2f Program where, for half a decade, I worked to create the LifePractice Model, creating a mash-up of Project Based Learning and 1:1 laptops with a Democratic approach to learning. Graduating from Emporia State University in 1994 with a BSE in Social Science, I began teaching the day school at a residential boys' home for The Farm, Inc. where I discovered differentiated instruction and how to engage students well beyond my formal pre-service teaching instruction. I taught all subjects to 11 boys at a time, ages 11-18, at the home's dining room table, using 20 year old textbooks. Eventually uncovering a lifelong passion, in 2004, I earned my Master’s degree in Psychology and Special Education with an emphasis in Gifted Education. I began working as the Gifted Services Coordinator at Emporia Middle School and also serving as NCA Steering Committee Chair. I have served on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Association for the Gifted, Talented, and Creative for the past 7 years as a Region Representative, State and Federal Legislative Liaison, Conference Chair, and the Kansas Education Liaison, and have been a member of the National Association for Gifted Children, working at both the state and federal levels, advocating for the needs of gifted children in Kansas. Currently, I serve as the co-chair of the Professional Learning Committee for the Kansas Learning First Alliance (KLFA), am on the Board of Directors for Advocates for High-Ability Learners (AHA Learners), am a member of the Kansas Council for the Social Studies, am a Google Certified Teacher, and am a Discovery Education Network STAR Educator. I was also recently named "Teacher of the Month" for Northeast Kansas by 27 KSNT and Fox KTMJ television out of Topeka.  I also have a very supportive husband, Eric, of nearly 17 years and the cutest little terrier mutt, Charlie, you’ll ever know!

PBL Studio Sessions
We are offering hands-on, creativity-infused Studio Sessions for participants interested in experiencing Project Based Learning. We feel that teachers teach how they are taught, so many of the sessions are created to nurture the learner in all of us. Studios are not a “sit-and-get” workshop. The Studio format expects that teachers will be bringing out their creativity and following an active-learner approach to their learning. All of our session are Full-Day Studios, except for the “Lite Side Session.” See the menu for more details.

Tools of the Trade: PBL collaboration with technology
If we expect students to develop 21st century communication skills, they need the opportunity to authentically practice them in their everyday learning experiences. This studio is a hands-on learning experience for you to explore, collaborate, and share essential learning tools, such as  Google tools, wikis, websites, blogs, video conferencing, social bookmarking, mind mapping, info graphics, podcasting, presentation tools, screen casting, and resource curation. You will leave with a portfolio full of tools and a head full of techniques to help students to be ready for today's real world.

Project Based Learning is more than simply letters in the educational alphabet soup.  PBL is a tried-and-true recipe guiding new and experienced chefs as they learn to excite their learners, create a caring classroom environment, and keep students asking for second helpings of learning! We'll learn the difference between projects and Project Based Learning and how to incorporate required standards, as well as play with a few essential collaborative technology tools. If you're looking for an active learning experience at the beginner's level this is the session for you.
