The Fund was established in 1998 with the intention of offering scholarships to students progressing to post-secondary education and who will be pursuing Musical studies as their main focus. The fund was started when a few members of the local musical scene felt there was a need both to support young musicians and to provide some financial help. Candidates are required to be living or studying within the Township of Uxbridge boundaries and must be under the age of 25. Financial Support Continues to be generously given by local service clubs while local students and bands raise money by presenting concerts as well. the thomas Foster Memorial

The Foster Memorial is located: 4 km north of Uxbridge on Durham 1 (Conc. 7) on the east side of the road. 9449 Regional Rd # 1, Uxbridge The Thomas Foster memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on a hill in the countryside of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahal inspired its structure (Agra, India). The roof surfaces are copper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, tracery and all metal parts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windows are the work of Yvonne Williams, and are of hand-painted, fired and leaded glass, the colour and designs are harmonious and are distributed so as to flood the interior with soft, colourful light. The 22kgold mosaics with also multi colors give elegance to this magnificent building. The floors are of rich coloured terrazzo and marble mosaics, wrought in symbolic designs. on entering, one crosses the River of oaths on which floats water lilies and lily pads. In the general design of the floor beneath the great dome, the motion, typifying life, radiates from the Greek letters Alpha and omega which in turn flank the Chi Rho monogram in its early byzantine form, the laurel wreath of victory over death encircles the centre motif. above, the drum of the dome is pierced with 12 stained glass, leaded windows, that in the east being in the form of a gold cross on a rich blue ground. Circling the lower part of the dome, above the great arches in gold lettering on a field of graded blue mosaic is the inscription Take this my body for it is done and I have gained a new life, glorious and eternal

Uxbridge fire depArTMenT

a Message from the Uxbridge Fire Department

When a fire occurs, there is no time to waste. Being prepared helps when minutes matter. Make a Home fire escape Plan with your family today. Make your home fire escape plan Draw a floor plan of your home a map showing every room, every window, and every door. sit down with your entire family and discuss the two best ways to escape from each room in your house. Pick a meeting place outside of your home and make sure everyone knows to go there when they have escaped the house. if you live in an apartment building learn and practice your buildings evacuation plan. Know the location of all building exits and fire alarms. leave immediately if you hear a smoke alarm. Take your key in case you cant escape and you are forced to return to your apartment. Use the stairs never use the elevator during a fire. Do not go back inside once you have escaped a fire. Report any locked or blocked exits to your building manager. now you need to practice your home fire escape plan everyone goes to the room where he or she sleeps. a grownup sounds the smoke alarm by pressing the test button. everyone follows the escape plan and gets out of the house. be creative. Pretend that exits are blocked so alternative escape routes can be practiced. Turn all the lights out and practice escape routes in the dark. Pretend that there is smoke in the house and practice crawling your escape route. everyone goes directly to the planned meeting place. Practice your escape drills a least twice a year. escape Tips If you hear a smoke alarm, get out and stay out. When you escape, move quickly and be careful, but do not run. If you have to escape through smoke, crawl low on your hands and knees, keeping your head one to two feet above the floor, where the air will be the cleanest. Test the doorknob and spaces around the door with the back of your hand. If the door is warm, try another escape route. If the door is cool, open the door slowly. Close the door quickly 46 TOWN OF UXBRIDGE COMMUNITY GUIDE if smoke pours through. Close doors behind you as you escape to slow the spread of the fire. Install and maintain your smoke alarms. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and out side all bedrooms. Test your smoke alarm once a month. Replace alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace any alarm that is more that 10 years old. Just for the kids. The Uxbridge Fire Department and Sparky want to know Do you have smoke alarms in your home? Can you hear the sound of the smoke alarms when you are in your bedroom? Does the sound of the smoke alarm wake you up? Do you know who to call if there is a fire? Do you have a home fire escape plan? Do you have an outside meeting place to go to after youve escaped from a fire? Have you ever practiced a home fire drill? Do the grownups test your smoke alarms at least once a month to make sure they work? Talk to your parents if the answer to any of these questions was no. If you have any questions or require further information please call the Uxbridge Fire Department at 905-852-3393 remember in the event of an eMergenCY call 9-1-1

Heritage Uxbridge
Heritage Uxbridge is a committee commissioned by the Uxbridge Council to act as an advocate for the preservation and conservation of heritage properties in the township. The committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who carry out a number of on-going responsibilities throughout the year, working with the community and the township members assisting with and advising in matters related to heritage and cultural aspects. In past years, the committee has developed and organized guided tours, and published articles and maps that help promote Uxbridges cultural heritage. further, the committee continues to maintain a close watch on the Pickering airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect any properties of historical value found within that area. It also produced a Heritage District Sign By-law to help promote a heritage look in the downtown district and continues to recognize individuals homes of heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program. last year, an award called the heritage Appreciation Award was established by the committee to recognize those individuals for taking the initiative and action to preserve our past. Three recipients, strawberry Threads, Rutledges Jewellers and the Tin Mill have received this award. This year we will continue to award local area Heritage farms. The Heritage Sign By-law Guidelines is used as a reference to determine award recipients, and the boundaries include the entire township. Information about how to receive this award along with ideas on improving building facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage appearance, can be found in the Heritage Uxbridge sign Guidelines at the Townships office. 2011 will also see the committee involved with the Downtown revitalization, project and those plans and policies that will guide the township with its development of the downtown core. further, the committee continues to maintain a close watch on the Pickering airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect any properties of historical and cultural value found within that area. last year the community of leaskdale and the lucy Maud Montgomery foundation saw themselves proud, as its original Presbyterian church known mainly for its connection to lucy Maud, received a Provincial Heritage designation. If you would like more information about this committee or have any questions about Heritage Uxbridge heritage, please contact Pat Mikuse at prmikuse@sympatico.ca or Robin Coombs atrcoombs@powergate.ca

PROTECTING THE UXBRIDGE WATERSHED

Yellow Fish Road School Program

YOU LIVE IN THE UXBRIDGE BROOK WATERSHED

A watershed is a land area that drains rain and other water into a wetland or groundwater aquifer. Rain and irrigation from lawns and gardens wash pollutants off surfaces like streets, sidewalks, roofs, driveways and parking lots, into our streams, rivers and wetlands, and eventually, our lakes. Storm water can be polluted from these everyday activities by draining into catch basins, which then pollute our streams: Motor oil and auto fluids which leak from our vehicles Oil, paint or household cleaners dumped or rinsed into the gutter Litter and grime that collects on parking lots and sidewalks Dirt, leaves and lawn clippings that clog storm drains and choke creeks Weed killers, fertilizers and pesticides that are washed off lawns Pet waste left on lawns, streets, in the gutter, or on sidewalks Pollutants in the air carried by rain through storm drains

To help reduce Motor Vehicle Collisions and potential injuries and fatalities in the Township of Uxbridge. what is Aggressive driving? aggressive driving is defined as excessive speeding, tail- gating, failure to stop and any other unsafe driving that puts others at high risk for collision or injury. how does road watch work? Citizen Report forms may be used any time you observe an act of aggressive driving. Record as much information as you can about the particular aggressive driving incident that you witnessed. This information will help the police in monitoring high risk areas in our community. To complete the report, include the license number, the make and colour of the vehicle, the location (as exact as possible) and the nature of the incident. When you send in the report, it is important that you sign it. This helps safeguard the system against abuse. be assured that your personal information is for statistical use only and is held in the strictest of confidence. Drivers reported will receive a letter from the police, describing the unsafe or aggressive driving incident that was witnessed. If a driver is reported more than once, the police will make personal contact with that individual regarding the reported problems in person or by telephone. subsequent offenses may result in enforcement action by the police depending on the severity of the incident. Remember, this is your opportunity to make our roads safer the same roads you use everyday. TOWN OF UXBRIDGE COMMUNITY GUIDE 51
