How would you describe her to someone who had not read the book? What were your impressions of the hero of the story, Harrison Bennett? How would you describe him? What did you like or dislike about him? Which character could you relate to most? What specific aspect of their personality did you connect with? What significance does the name of the town, Mercy Falls, have, do you think? What are some of the themes you noticed in the book? A major theme of the book is living up to other people s expectations (or not). What pressures did Olivia face? What did she risk by defying society s expectations? Another theme is the differences between wealthy and poor, between privileged and their servants. What point do you think the author was trying to make? The book is set in 1910. How does the book describe American culture at that time? Do you feel it is an accurate depiction, historically? How is it different from American culture today? In some of her sensibilities, Olivia is has a more modern outlook than other women in the book. Can you think of specific instances where she defies cultural norms of the time? What impact does this have on her life? How does her independent attitude impact her relationship with Harrison Bennett? Harrison Bennett is a pilot. Why do you think the author chose that particular hobby for him? What themes of the book relate to flying? What does flying symbolize? Olivia sees a different type of marriage than those she s seen in New York society as she gets to know Katie and Will Jespersen, the keepers of the lighthouse. Describe their relationship and how it impacts Olivia. This book is the third in a series. Have you read the previous books? If not, did reading this one make you want to read the first two books?
