Affirmative Negative Interrogative

Uses:
A completed action in the past.
Mark finished school in 2004.
A series of completed actions in the past. When he worked as a journalist, he met interesting
people and travelled to far away countries.

+ To tell how things were in the past. + Para contar cómo eran las cosas en el pasado.

• In the Middle Ages, few people knew how to read and write.

En la Edad Media poca gente sabía leer y escribir.

+ To point that a short action interrupted a longer one. + Para indicar que una acción corta
interrumpió otra más larga que estaba en proceso. La acción breve suele ir introducida por la
conjunción when.

When you called, we were having dinner.

Cuando llamaste estabamos cenando.

English verbs are divided into Regular verbs and Irregular verbs depending on the

past simple tense formation.

REGULAR VERBS:

We form the Past Simple of regular verbs by adding –ed. Formamos el pasado simple

de los verbos regulares añadiendo al infinitivo la terminación –ed.

SPELLING: -ed.

-e -d double consonant + ed consonant + y -ied vowel + y -yed

Like – liked prefer – preferred carry – carried play – played
Hate – hated stop – stopped study – studied enjoy – enjoyed
Close – closed travel – travelled tidy – tidied stay – stayed

IRREGULAR VERBS:

Irregular verbs have a special Past form. You have to study them by heart.

The Past Simple forms are at the second column.

Los verbos irregulares tienen una forma de pasado especial. Tienes que estudiarlos
de memoria. Las formas de pasado simple están en la segunda columna.
