Editors Note
As announced in last months Matters, with
this edition we say goodbye to Liz Clark, our
stalwart editor of the last four years or so. Liz
has wisely decided that its time to take a
break from the monthly routine of chasing copy
and battling with printers, to concentrate on
some of her other interests such as helping
to save the Zion Wildlife Park and working on
a number of other publications (the words
glutton and punishment come to mind). Im
sure youll join me in a hearty vote of thanks
for her efforts over the years, and wish her
well for the future. Thankfully, shell still be
down the road to help offer advice and bail me
out when I get stuck!
As always when a new editor takes over, I
wont be able to resist doing a little tinkering
with the Matters as time goes on. The aim of
this will clearly be to make it better, not worse
so if there are any changes youd like to see,
please let me know either by email
(maungaturotomatters@gmail.com) or by dropping a note in the red box in Tonys.
Residents survey
This edition is also important because it sees
the first results of the Survey, which the Residents Association ran a month or two back.
Further results will be included in the next edition. Youll have seen the word cloud listing
the best things about living in Maungaturoto on
the front cover. Hidden rather more discreetly
in the centre pages is a smaller cloud summarising the things people didnt like. The good
things are clearly what we need to enjoy and
protect. The bad things, however, are no less
important because they are what we need to
work on to improve. One of the key aims of
the Matters will be to drum up support for such
work and to inform everyone of the progress
that we all make.
So, I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the
Maungaturoto Matters as much as youve enjoyed reading previous ones. And with the
aid of the editorial committee and all the eager volunteers involved in compiling, collating
and distributing the Matters I look forward
to producing future editions on your behalf.

Cheers,
David

Residents Association
Update
July 2011 saw the Residents Association undertaking the Maungaturoto Residents Survey
2011. 94 people took up the challenge and
responded, giving excellent feedback, suggestions and comments on Maungaturoto. A
Survey of this size has not been conducted for
many years. The number of questions needed
to be asked in order for the new Association to
understand fully what the community wants, its
attitudes and opinions was large so thank
you!
Comprehensive Survey Results will be presented at the next Residents Association meeting on the 7th September at the Maungaturoto
Primary School at 7.30pm. The extent of the
results make it impossible to publish it completely in this edition of the Matters. However,
on the front cover is a word cloud made from
responses from the first question: what are the
best things about Maungaturoto? The bigger
the words the more popular the answer.
Complete Survey Results can be obtained by
contacting Association Secretary Nyree Alcock
or by coming along to the next meeting. We will
also have them available on the relaunched
www.realtownmaungaturoto.co.nz website
when it is up and running.
One issue the Association is currently working
through is the upgrade of the Maungaturoto
Website. This upgrade will also be discussed at
length at the next meeting and will be relaunched shortly.
Lastly and most importantly, thank you to Liz
Clark for the past 4 years editing the Maungaturoto Matters. Liz has now stepped down to
continue with other editorial opportunities and
commitments and we thank Liz on behalf of the
entire community for all the hard work she has
contributed towards Maungaturoto. It is now
with great pleasure we introduce David Briggs
as the new editor of the Maungaturoto Matters.
David and Ann Briggs have been members of
the Maungaturoto community for about 2 years
and have come to us from England. Thank you
David for stepping up and we look forward to
seeing future editions of our real great local
publication.
Reminder: Meetings are on the 1st Wednesday
of the month and everyone is more than welcome to attend. Next meeting: 7th September
at the Primary School.

HOMEBUILDERS
MAUNGATUROTO/PAPAROA
It is good to see the winter months move on
now, and that we can look forward to more
sunshine and warmth.
During the winter we have made some major
repairs to the Community House. Consequently
we are now a lot more comfortable: thanks
once again to the Brook family.
Today, as in a few days over the past weeks, I
find myself in the Community House on my
own. We really are a bit short of volunteers to
answer the phone and take care of visitors to
the house. If you or anyone you know
would like to contribute a day a week from 9am
to 3pm to your community through this agency,
I would love to hear from you. The tasks are
not onerous and the environment is warm and
friendly. So please dont hesitate to give me a
ring: Denise on 431 9080. Thanks in advance.
Katrina Goodfellow has offered to help raise
funds for the work of Homebuilders Community
Services by finding sponsors to fund her for
running in the Auckland Marathon in October
this year. This is a 40 kilometre run (whew!)
and it is our intention to approach local folk to
join in with this fund-raising by sponsoring
Katrina for her run. We are delighted at
Katrinas offer and will be out and about to help
her find sponsors over the next weeks.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
the children from the Primary School for their
performance for the Seniors Lunch in July.
Your ability and willingness to come were much
appreciated.
A big thank you also to the Paparoa Community
Church for coming to our aid with a food parcel
at short notice. Your care for this community is
something we appreciate very much.
It is also time to thank Liz for her hard work
over the past four years in producing our great
local paper. Liz, you have always been a delight to work with, and we at Homebuilders are
very grateful to you for so often working with
us when we are running a bit late. Go Girl! We
hope the future holds lots of good things for
you and your girls.

Blessings from Denise

Kaiparas District Plan Due in September

Press Release
The decisions version of the reviewed District Plan will be considered for adoption
at Councils September meeting. The
Hearings Panel has made its decisions on
the 513 submissions received and this has
resulted in a redrafting of the Plan to give
effect to those decisions. said Mayor Neil
Tiller in announcing the timetable for the
District Plan.
He went on to advise that it is proposed to be
publicly notified on 21 October should Council
resolve to adopt the Plan at the September
meeting and it would be open for appeals to the
Environment Court for 30 working days as
required by the Resource Management Act.
This process gives submitters to the Plan the
opportunity to consider how their concerns
have been dealt with by the Hearings Panel and
if they are not satisfied they can appeal to the
Environment Court which will consider the
concerns and make an independent and binding
decisions. commented Mayor Tiller.
He then said he was very proud of the work
done by the Council and its Hearings Panel to
get the Plan to this point. The Plan has been
based around a number of outcomes supported
by the community during the pre-plan consultation process. This has driven all stages of the
process. It has given the Council a robust
District Plan with strong links from the
outcomes through to the Plans policies and
rules. This approach provides the district with a
high level of certainty around what is intended
to be achieved by the Plan.
This is an enabling plan which is specially
written to protect the Kaiparas life blood,
farming, as well as encouraging other industries
and businesses to establish and grow in the
Kaipara, noted Mayor Tiller.
When asked about the recently repeated call to
withdraw the proposed plan Mayor Tiller
commented that Paul Cavanagh QCs advice is
two years late. He is commenting on a plan
which has been through a public submissions
process and Council is about to announce the
results of that two year process. I would
suggest that we will see a significantly different
plan said Mayor Tiller, It may even answer
the concerns of those asking for it to be withdrawn.
He was also concerned that withdrawing the
Plan at this late stage would cause the Council
to incur even greater costs because Council is

required by law to have a District Plan.

However, he was more concerned at the
injustice the withdrawal would cause to all of
the submitters who have taken part in the
statutory process. Withdrawing the plan now
would see most of those submitters ignored.
He said. Going through the statutorily
mandated process ensures fairness to all.
Council is also processing Variation 1 which will
insert an Outstanding Landscapes Chapter into
the new District Plan. It is in this area that
Farmers of New Zealand and others have
expressed concern. Withdrawing the Plan at this
time will not make the issue disappear. Those
concerned about this aspect should have taken
part in that public process which has just been
completed according to Mayor Tiller. The
Council received 556 submissions on the
Outstanding Landscapes provisions and these
will be heard later in the year.
The Northland Regional Council is preparing its
review of its Regional Policy Statement which
will cover similar areas of concern for those
concerned about the outstanding landscapes
provisions included in Kaipara District Councils
Variation 1. Kaiparas Chief Executive Jack
McKerchar noted that the Government has
issued a new National Coastal Policy Statement
which the Regional Council will have to give
effect to in its Regional Policy Statement. This
seems to require a much higher level of protection than envisaged by the Kaipara District
Council. In our discussions with Regional
Council people they have indicated there may
need to be rules covering activities within the
Coastal Policy area and other protected lands.
said Kaipara Chief Executive Jack McKerchar.
According to him this imposition of controls
should be of major concern to land owners,
especially farmers.

has also yet to be filled.

After a brief introduction, we had a friendly,

informal meeting with a lot of points relating to
community comfort and convenience being
raised.

Following afternoon tea and some informal

chat, the meeting dispersed with most people
on their way home around 3pm.

The engine-braking problem has been referred

to the relevant authority and we are assured
that signs will be erected very soon.
There was a discussion on the rates and
various Council decisions and the possibility of
getting a local councillor to come and address
our meeting.

important office please contact someone on the

The August meeting will be on the 31st and the

LINKING HANDS
We all went and bought gloves at Linking
Hands: our steering wheels were freezing. We
hope you all coped with that cold weather and
that now we can look forward to spring.
As you have probably noticed we have a new
department in our office. Its called
Northable. This is a company that works from
Whangarei and has all sorts of things to offer
people with disabilities. Northable has provided
Linking Hands with a new computer that gives
us access to their own information and details.
Skype is also available for use by the public.
Anyone wanting to make contact with their
office can do so from this computer. For those
who dont know about such things, Skype
allows you not only to talk to someone direct,
but also to see them on the screen and be seen
isnt that clever! There is an ad on page 6
about their services, so have a look at it. If you
need information regarding any equipment or
service for a disability and that also means
help for the elderly then come in and have a
look at it.
We also have another surprise for you: a free
community wheelchair! This was given to
us, and is available for anyone in our community that needs it. This includes, for example,
to help with a visiting friend or relative who has
limited mobility. It will be free though if you
wish, of course, a donation is always welcome.
You need to book it with us, telling us the time
it is needed for. We are very excited to be able
to offer you this new to our communities.
Now a reminder about our other services.

We have special needs outings for the elderly

on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Its a
mystery trip. We would like to urge you to
phone us to book a seat as its harder for us to
ring around. The next trip is 15th September so
give us a call on 09 4318969 if you want to go.
We still have those FAB outings for a family
that just needs a break and to spend some time
together. If you know someone that could do
with this special family outing, give us a call.
We are very busy with our secondhand books
and find that they are turning over quite regularly. There are some great authors to choose
from. So keep on coming in with those books:
they are helping us pay the rent!
The computers, of course, are still going
strong, and we can also help with any other
office need you might have: copying, laminating, and, now, our new Northable computer
with all sorts of new information. We also have
Fundview for those of you needing to know
about funding groups, where to go, how to get
money, etc.
Last but not least, our main business which
is the health shuttle service. This is for anyone who needs to get to any medical appointment. Just give us a call and tell us your need
and we take it from there. You can also look at
our website: www.linkinghands@co.nz. Or call
us about any information you need.
Have a great month.
Regards
Maureen Davis.

Message from the Principal
On behalf of my family, I would like to thank
you all for your support and kindness since our
arrival in this wonderful town, Maungaturoto.
The Powhiri at the beginning of the term was a
fantastic way to start and the children should
be proud of their efforts their singing was
beautiful!
Once again thanks for the warm welcome. I
look forward to getting to know more of you
during the coming weeks. Feel free to pop in for
a chat at any stage.
With the change in weather will come the usual
sniffles, colds and flu. If your child is unwell,
please remember to keep them at home until
they are better. This is for two reasons: one is
to make sure that they have the best chance of
a speedy and full recovery in order to return to
school and be fully focused on their learning;
the other is to make sure contagious bugs
arent spread around.
Coffee and Chat mornings will be held 2 or 3
times throughout each term. This provides us
with an opportunity to present and share
information with you about our teaching and
learning programmes and also any future
developments that we may be planning to work

towards. Please see school newsletters or check

at the office for future Coffee & Chat Morning
dates.

Otamatea High School

Opens its Doors
An exciting, interactive Open Day was held at
Otamatea High School on Friday 19 August.
Starting at 9.45am students from Waipu,
Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto and Paparoa
schools, along with students from other areas, were
welcomed by the Kapa Haka group and school
Principal with a whakatau, then, after being divided
into groups, went on an interactive journey through
the school.
Highlights for most students (and their parents
too!) were decorating cupcakes in the Food
Technology room and the creation of a painting
which followed the ideas of Jackson Pollock an
American abstract expressionist painter. Other
hands-on activities were provided by each of the
Learning Areas in the school, including Physical
Education, Music, Maori, Computing.
Students also visited the Learning Centre, Science
labs and other classes where they had other
activities to take part in.
The feedback from both students and parents was
extremely positive.
At interval, students and parents came back to the
Hall where they were entertained by senior
Performing Arts students who danced The Pike
River Dance, choreographed by Level 3 Dance
student Tui Hofman, and Nic Hamblin who played
guitar for Brittany Brown, who sang Shade.
The students were able to look at all the displays in
the Hall which included ones for Careers,
Mathematics, Technology and Aviation Academy, to
name but a few.
After completing the second part of the tour the
students were farewelled and returned to their
respective schools with the sausage butty.

MAUNGATUROTO PLAYCENTRE NEWS

All the kids and parents have settled into the
new term and so far weve had a trip to the
Kaiwaka gym, where the kids enjoyed going
around a circuit of various gym equipment. We
have also had a disco, which everyone enjoyed,
and although the kids got to bed a little later
that night following a nice dinner, dessert
and some disco dancing we all think they did
really well. It was perfect full moon weather,
and the kids loved running around underneath
the stars, after having a break from dancing.
Our cake stall went really well, so thank you to
all who supported it!! We hope you enjoyed
our baking. A special thank you to 4 Square for
the ingredients they so kindly donated to us.
Please remember, we appreciate any empty
printer toner cartridges for recycling and thank
you for the ones you have already returned.
You can either drop them off at Playcentre
during our session times, noted below, or at
Fergus Appliance Spot.

There are always planned session activities for

the kids as well as standard activities including
painting, waterplay, dressups, science, puzzles,
sandpit playing etc. There is, therefore, something to suit every child.
We would love to have new kids and parents
join, so come and see what Playcentre is all
about.
Times and costs are as follows:
General sessions are Mondays and Fridays
9.30am 12.30pm, with an extended session
on Wednesdays 9.30am 12.30am for 3+
year olds.
Cost per term is $20 for 1 child over 2yrs or
$25 for 2 or more children over 2yrs under
2s are free.
Your first three visits are free!

MAUNGATUROTO GARDEN CLUB

August meeting

Garden notes for September

th

Garden Club members met on 17 August at

the Centennial Hall for our mid-winter meeting,
with many colourful competition entries and
evidence of hard work in the vegetable garden.
Our speaker was Gordon Hosking who gave a
wonderfully entertaining talk about Project
Crimson, which is a 1020 year project for the
protection and regeneration of the large
number of Pohutukawa trees which have been
decimated by possums in many parts of the
country. He was pleased to report that possum
control over the years has helped to regenerate
many Pohutukawa.
Also he spoke about a new project partnered by
The Tindall Foundation, Project Crimson, DOC
and Meridian which will be occurring in September and October 2011. This will include planting of thousands of native trees in selected
public locations throughout New Zealand to
honour 17 of our Rugby Legends, all in time for
the Rugby World Cup.
Our next meeting is at 12.30 p.m. on 21st
September, at Carolyn Van Pelts home, with
the usual competitions and the theme of
Collection of Grasses for the monthly decorative arrangement.

Growth will be rapid in the garden this month

as buds, flowers, bulbs and seeds are sprouting. However, be aware of any late frosts.
Here, therefore, are a few tips for the month.
Finish tree and shrub planting.
Spray peaches to prevent brown rot. Also
spray apple trees or hang pheromone traps
in the branches.
There will be new seasons growth on citrus
new leaves and flower buds appearing.
Apply citrus fertilizer around the base of the
trees.
Plant potatoes, parsnips, leeks, cabbages,
cauliflowers and lettuces. You can think
about planning the summer garden.
Fertilise cinerarias and dust with derris dust
to stop caterpillars having a feast of the
leaves.
Roses will be well advanced with new shoots.
Apply mulch to the base of all bushes along
with rose fertilizer.
And dont forget, new members are, of course,
welcome!

articles and advertisements
Contributions may be submitted:
1. by email to the editor at maungaturotomatters@gmail.com;
2. by post to the editor at 266A Gorge Road,
Maungaturoto, 0588 Northland;
3. via the drop-box in Tonys Lotto Shop, Hurndall Street, Maungaturoto

ARTICLES
We encourage submission of material for publication in the Maungaturoto Matters. Three
types of contribution are especially welcome:
1. Announcements about forthcoming events
of public interest. These should ideally
provide information on the title/name of
the event; the name(s) of the organisers;
the date/time of the event; the intended
audience (i.e. who should attend); the
location; contact details; entry fees/
charges and deadlines for any entries
(where applicable).
2. Reports of meetings or events including
not only reports from local organisations
but also sports reports, reviews of concerts or plays, and descriptions of social
events. Please make these as interesting
as possible to the readership by: providing
some context to the event (why, where,
when); describing what went on at the
event; highlighting any important decisions or outcomes; avoiding official or
bureaucratic language; providing good
quality photographs where relevant.
3. Articles and creative materials, such as
short stories about local experiences, interesting sightings or happenings, poems,
riddles and pieces of artwork. In general,
these should be no more than 400 words
in length (to fit a single column in the
Matters). Artwork or photographs should
reproduce clearly in black and white.

Adverts
Rates for adverts are shown on page 43.
Adverts should be provided in a form that will
reproduce clearly in black and white at the
desired size. Many require editing to make
them suitable. Advertisers are therefore encourage to provide copy in the form of:
Word documents or
Powerpoint presentations
Where necessary, hard copy materials can be
scanned. These, however, need to be good
quality originals (not photocopies), preferably in
black and white.

Page 21
Materials submitted to the Matters should always be
clearly labelled with a unique file/document name
(title of the event, name of advertiserNOT just
Maungoturoto Matters or the month!). Poorly
labelled materials may get lost!
Please also ensure that you provide full contact details including an email address and telephone number.
For adverts, ensure that you clearly specify the required size, start date and end date for the advert,
and planned payment method. A proforma is available for this purpose. Without this information, adverts cannot be accepted.

Maungaturo Residents Survey

Preliminary Results
Back in July, the Maungaturoto Residents Association ran a survey of residents, to obtain their
views on what they liked and disliked about the
town, and what changes they would like to see.
In total, 94 responses were obtained. The results have now been compiled and a summary
will be given at the Maungaturoto Residents Association Meeting on the 7th September at the
Primary School, at 7.30pm. So if you want to
see the results and contribute to the discussion
about what they mean, please come along.
On the cover of this edition of Maungaturoto
Matters is a word cloud summarising answers to
the question: what do you like best about living
in Maungaturoto? Looking at that, we can see
that some of the things we hold most dear are
the character of the people and community, and
its schools. (Interestingly, though, some of
these same issues are also listed amongst those
that we least like suggesting that the town
currently serves the needs of only part of its
community.)
The following pages present some more, preliminary results, in the form of graphs and a
short interpretation. You will see that people
are generally happy with the town, and some
things such as the emergency services receive consistent praise. But there are also
things that wed like to improve. Were not entirely happy, for example, about the availability
of some types of shop, nor about cultural and
leisure facilities. And the visual appearance of
the town comes in for some criticism.
Further results will be given in the next issue of
Maungaturoto Matters. Meanwhile, if you want
to comment on what youve seen so far, please
send your thoughts to the editor via
maungaturotomatters@gmail.com, and Ill
collate some of the feedback for the next issue.

Emergency and health services

In general we are very happy with
local emergency services, with an
average score 7/10. But health
provision receives a less favourable
response especially the lack of
dental services.

Overall we are satisfied with our
community facilities, which we give

good. But we are much less satisfied
with cultural and leisure facilities
and the skatepark gets rather poor

Shopping facilities and services

We think our shopping facilities
are a bit of a mixed bunch. The
pharmacy and petrol stations get
good scores, and the cafes, auto services, groceries and hardware are
rated OK. But clothing and childcare outlets are seen to be lacking.
Banking, legal and financial services
are also generally thought to be inadequate. The overall score is 6/10.
Perhaps as a result, 75% of us do

This page shows responses relating to questions about what we like least about Maungaturoto,
about local issues, about the Christmas Parade, and the Maungaturoto Residents Association.
What do you least like about
Maungaturoto?
The things we dont like are very
varied: they range from the people to
the soil! Those most often cited (by
about 20% or more of us) are community attitudes, access to medical
services and supermarkets, the
appearance of the town, its isolation
and the availability of leisure
facilities.

Local issues
We are generally happy with the
number of events that are put on
locally for us and our families.
Rubbish is seen as a problem by only
a minority of people. But we are not
at all happy with the appearance of
our streets (especially the high
street) which we think needs to be
improved.

Christmas Parade
The Christmas Parade is a favourite
for many, and gets a good overall
score. Theres quite a range of
opinions, though, about what time of
day it should be just to show that
you cant please everyone all the
time!

Christian Comment
The world has had a large dollop of bad news
in the last 12 months:

The Japanese tsunami, with resulting loss of

life, property damage, and ongoing problems with the nuclear power station.

Floods and fires in Australia

The Pike River mine disaster

The Christchurch earthquake and aftershocks

Civil war in several Middle East countries

with much loss of life

Severe drought in parts of Africa.

Norwegian massacre

As well as the above, a number of democratic

nations have gone broke, and others are teetering on the brink. At the time of writing,
Greece, Portugal, and Ireland are virtually
broke. Spain and Italy are teetering, the United
Kingdom has a large debt burden, and the
United States was in a position to default on its
payments unless Congress passed a law to
raise its legal debt ceiling.
How have the democracies got into such financial trouble? A schoolboy could work it out. If

and make up the deficit by continual borrowing, there has to come a time when your finances are no longer viable. The problem can
be solved by getting expenditure in balance
with income.
We all have a debt problem with God that was
far more costly to fix. All have sinned and
come short of Gods standards. Whenever we
sin, we cause hurt to someone else, and God
says the wages of sin is death (eternal separation from Him in hell).
This impossible debt of sin would cost us our
eternal life in heaven: we all need help. Because God loves us (not our sin), Jesus Christ,
Gods only Son, came and paid the debt of our
sin with His death on the cross. God raised Him
from the dead on the third day, so that all who
repent of sin, and receive Jesus as Lord, are
granted forgiveness (because Hes paid the sin
debt) and receive the gift of eternal life.
It was mainly Germany that, at least temporarily, helped Greece out of their financial debt
disaster. It is the Lord Jesus Christ who will
save from eternal death all who put their trust
in Him. This is the good news that God sends
to all mankind.

Zonta Trivial Pursuit

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai hosted a wildly
successful Trivial Pursuit evening on Thursday
11th August.
Tables were completely booked out well ahead,

Both won big baskets of tasty delicacies, mostly
locally produced.

Matakohe Music Makers

Matakohe Music Makers had the most wonderful
evening at the Cruiser Bar and Grill Paparoa on
August 9th. We had a Country theme. The
resident band was Highly Strung, which is
made up of Mark on guitar, Cindy on fiddle,
John on banjitar (nickname for the banjoguitar), and Brent on his mandolin. What an
awesome performance from all!
Amongst the other performers were Dennise
Brownlee's group of ukelele players, with some
of them making their debut for the first time
with their ukes. Laurie Walker, our resident
drummer, made a wonderful impression, along
with Alistair Taylor on Bass. Then there was
Caroline Wessell with her piano. Such fun and
laughter was had by all!
For the next Matakohe Music Makers we will

Thanks to everybody who helped
to make ANNIE a great success!
Annie was a very popular show with great
patronage throughout the season. Everybody
from cast, stage crew and front of house support played their part admirably and ORT
wishes to thank you all.
The paintings in the theatre foyer were a result
of a competition run before the show and congratulations to Jack James from Waipu, who
came out the winner, and to the two runners
up, Alyssa Matthews and Adriana Stolwerk.

Congratulations to all participants and to those

who accomplished something successful at the

Arty Farties Inc

Good morning to September and to you all from
Arty Farties.
I imagine you are all pleased to be over the
worst of winter and that spring is on its way at
last. We are looking forward to our garden
vegetables growing, and better weather for our
North Tec gardening course students.
We have just started our next course with 16
students learning to grow orchards and to landscape gardens. This is a very exciting course,
as fruit-growing is so very important to our
health and means that we will be able to provide the community with fruit from the trees
once they have been established.
We have an exciting announcement: we are
doing so well from our little stall, selling flower
and veg plants along with any fruit or veg that
has been donated, that we are able to spend
some of the money on buying fruit for our local
food bank groups.
Confused? Well its quite simple really: we
grow seedlings of various types and sell some
of them at our roadside stall at Paparoa Arty
Farties. The public buy them with a gold coin
donation and we spend that money directly
back into more seedlings plus fresh fruit for
the community. Many thanks to those people
that donate to this cause
This is what our community garden is all about.
Its about giving back to you in the community.
And once the vegetables are growing we will be
providing those to you as well.
We want to list the groups that will be provided
with this food so that you in the community will
know where to go to get it.
In Maungaturoto, food bank groups are: Linking Hands, Homebuilders, Arataki Ministries.

In Paparoa, the group is Rose Plunkett.

We have started with buying the fruit but can
only do this as long as the donations keep coming in. We hope to be able to provide on a
weekly basis, but just check in with these
groups to see what is available at that time. We
wish to say thank you to all those that are supporting this project.
We have started a craze: patchwork quilting.
We have a Tuesday course every week and
again on Sunday afternoons. This has become
very popular, and we have quite a number of
ladies going flat-out making quilts for all the
family. This is great fun and a great place to be
for a social outing as well as a creative one so
come along and have a look at what is happening. We also run art/craft groups on other days
so give Arty Farties a call and find out when the
next class will be and what they are doing. Just
ring 09 431 6655.
Another first for Arty Farties is setting up a
class for special needs people. This will be running monthly. The students are looking to do
bead-making and mosaics. We are delighted to
be able to help bring the creative arts to all
people that want to give it a go, so if you are
interested in anything give our manager a call
and discuss with her what you would like to do:
well give it a try. The number again is 09 431
6655.
The most important notice is that our summer
markets are starting up again on Labour weekend, so we are looking forward to seeing you all
back at the markets.
Have a great month.

Regards Maureen.

The Otamatea Hawks finished the season on a

high note, demolishing 2nd Division Winners
Pipiwai in the Northland Premiers relegation
match on Saturday.
After being dealt a few spankings this season,
it was Otamateas turn to be the ones dishing
out the punishment this time. The superior
pace, organisation and fitness of the Hawks
confirmed the large rift that exists between the
two divisions.
In picture perfect conditions, it quickly became
apparent that the ability of Otamatea to move
the ball would out-class the sluggish Pipiwai
pack. Toby Phillips marshalled play well from
number 10, passing accurate long-balls that
were swallowed up by a backline eager to run.
John-Luke Whitehead was devastating all day
with ball-in-hand, supported well by strong
running centres Tommy King and Lincoln Phillips. All four crossed the line, with Whitehead
and Phillips both scoring hat-tricks.
Further tries came after a charge down to
Dean Kingi, and after a fumble to Michael
Robinson, while Captain Siosi Tuatao was on
hand to take the last pass of a sweeping
attack.
A strong defensive effort kept the visitors
scoreless and highlighted the improvements
this team has made in all facets of the game
this year. No. 8, Adam Exler, was named
Player of the day for his strong defence. In
the end this was a game dominated by a fullstrength Hawks team from start to finish.
With a place in the Premier division now
confirmed, the Hawks coaches and management can look forward with optimism to
continuing the improvements made this
season.
Congratulations to the players for their efforts
and achievements this year. Thanks also again
to the sponsors, coaches and management for
making it happen, and most importantly the
supporters.

Bring on 2012!

Prize giving
We have just had our prize giving. It was a
pleasure and privilege to have a vey special
lady, Mrs Connie McMurchy, to present the
prizes. Connie has been a life member of the
club for 32 years; she was also Past President
of our club and Past President of Northland Ladies in 1974/85. She has been a coach since
the 1980s of Maungaturoto and of Whangarei
Ladies Bowling Club, now Kensington, until 10
years ago. She won her first title, The First
Year Singles, in 1969/70; in fact I dont think
there is a trophy in our club that does not have
Connies name on it. We owe such a lot to very
special people like Connie who give so much of
their time to make a club work. Thanks Connie
and happy bowling.
Congratulations to all the prize winners.

RODNEY/OTAMATEA TANIWHA CUP 2011

The tournament seems like a life time
ago now, and my apologies for updating
the community a little late. Its very
hard to put into words an experience
that we will each, from the children
through to the parents, hold with us for
a lifetime. We had a week away with a
team of children and parents staying at
Karapoina Marae in Awanui. This started
as a trip with associates and team
members and ended as a week of
wonderful memories with our Taniwha
Whanau. From rugby, to swimming to
movies to games, laughter, songs and
music, this was one of the most memorable times of my life. On the rugby
front, it was disappointing to come away
with no wins. Often the scores of games
did not reflect the skill, effort and passion put in
by our players. But there are always winners
and losers. Unfortunately for us, this was not to
be our year. However, just to indicate the skill
we had in our team, the Northland Roller Mills
selectors chose Kharnse Namana, Nathaniel
Taylor, Arapeta Barlow, Jaydon Connolly, Rangi
Walker and Jivan Melville for trials of the Northland Team. We are very proud of our team and
in particular Kharnse, Nathaniel, Jaydon and
Jivan for making the Northland Roller Mills team
following the trial.
Initially I wanted to name everyone who
supported our team through donations, grants,
time etc. I am happy to say that the support we
received from the Rodney/Otamatea District
was overwhelming and so greatly appreciated.
(Un)fortunately there are way too many

businesses and people to thank in one

go. So to all of you who pitched in in
some way, thank you on behalf of the
management and children.
Last Monday we held our prize-giving for
the team. Each player received a photo
disc of moments captured during the
week. Prizes were given to those who
sold the most raffle tickets and of course
our tournament award winners. Big congratulations to:
Best back: Rhys Shadbolt
Best forward: Rangi Walker
Most improved player: Sonny
Nathan
Player of the Tournament: Joseph Perrett
Each of these players stood out during the tournament. All players received a framed photograph of themselves in action during one of the
games, and a trophy which they can keep,
while Joseph was gifted a Taonga as part of his
prize. All team players, and in particular the
award winners and selected Northland Players,
can hold their heads high. We are very proud of
you all.
Our raffle winners for the half beasts were Ash
Cullen and Rose Cave of Maungaturoto, and the
gift basket went to Jo J. The half beast raffle
was drawn by management of the Manganui
Rugby Club/Taniwha Tournament in Taipa, so it
was wonderful to have both prizes come back
to the community.

International Rally of Whangarei

Last month, Maungaturoto hosted a stage of
the International Rally of NZ. Again, this was a
great success, and all those involved are due a
vote of special thanks, as the following extract
from a letter from Willard Martin, Deputy Clerk
of the Course, shows:

We had our best international ever with

entries from Australia, China, France, India,
Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the United
Kingdom, plus New Zealand. We had a total
of 17 offshore entries and are looking forward to an even better event next year.
The event ran very smoothly, despite the

extremely wet condition, which is a credit to

everyone concerned. At the same time we
must record our thanks to the communities
living on the stage roads. These people are
inconvenienced by the rally; we can only
hope that the income we generate for the
community helps to offset the extra efforts
that they make around the event.
We hope the date for the event next year
will be in April, which will certainly make life
much easier for everybody.
So, well done everyone, and lets repeat the
success next year!

List of advertisers

Note to all advertisers

Adverts are crucial to the success of the
Maungaturoto Matters, and we also hope
that advertising in the Matters helps local
business be successful.
Its clear, however, that some of the copy
for the adverts that we currently hold is beginning to get a bit tired and tatty or may
be out of date. Ive done my best to tidy up
what we have, and hope that, as a result,
some of the ads print out better from now
on. In the process, in some cases, Ive
taken small liberties with the copy we have
to try to make them a bit brighter and more
eye-catching. I hope that, in the process, I
havent fouled anything up!
It would therefore be to our mutual benefit
if all advertisers could check their ads in
this edition and let me know if they want
any amendments. It would also help enormously to receive new, master copies
(preferably as either Word or Powerpoint
files, or as hard copies that can be
scanned), where changes are needed.
Please send any corrections or new copy to:
maungaturotomatters@gmail.com
or by dropping hard copy into the red box in
Tonys.
Note that all advertising must be received
by the 15th of each month.
Thanks
The Editor
