RG14 2PZ. Dear Sir I do not give my consent to Fluoridation There has never been an RCT (randomised controlled trial which is the gold standard) that has demonstrated any beneficial effects for dental health. The evidence base for fluoridation is weak. The York Systematic Review which is the best overview of the topic found a lack of quality evidence and called for further research. The York Review also found insufficient evidence to link fluoridation with reductions in social inequalities in dental health. The fluorosilicic acid used in fluoridation schemes is an industrial chemical and a by-product of the phosphate fertiliser industry. Scientific evidence suggests that fluoride is linked to a range of health problems including osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in young boys. (Bassin, 2006) Water fluoridation will lead to an increase in cases of dental fluorosis (a symptom of excess fluoride) which can lead to discolouring of teeth and needs expensive dental work not available on the NHS.
