Premature Separation of the Placenta (Abruptio Placenta) Unlike placenta previa, in premature separation of the placenta, the placenta

appears to have been implanted correctly. Suddenly, however, it begins to separate and bleeding results. It occurs about 10% of pregnancies and is the most frequent cause of perinatal death. The separation generally occurs late in pregnancy; it may occur as late as during the first or second stage of labor.
