Pulley Problems

1

A smooth pulley means that the tensions on each side will be equal.

Using “F = ma” for each block For A : Resultant force in the direction of the acceleration is F = T – 8g So T – 8g = 8a Equation 1 For B : Resultant force in the direction of the acceleration is F = 12g – T

T A 8Kg B 12 Kg

T a

So 12g – T = 12a Equation 2 Adding the two equations gives 12g – 8g = 20a 4g = 20a a = 4g/20 = g/5 ms-2 From Equation 1 T = 8g + 8a = 8g +8× g/5 = 48g/5 N

Using “F = ma” for each block For A : Resultant force in the direction of the acceleration is F = T 1 So T = 10a Equation B 6 Kg 6g a For B : Resultant force in the direction of the acceleration is F = 6g –2T So 6g – T = 6a Equation Adding the two equations gives 6g = 16a a = 6g/16 = 3g/8 1 -2 ms From Equation T = 10a = 30g/8 N = 15g/4 N

T Smooth table so no friction.

To find the force on the pulley resolve along the line of symmetry. The resultant force is 2Tcos45º = 2× 15g/4× 1/√2 = 15g/(2√2) N. The components perpendicular to the line of symmetry cancel out.
