Muscular Dystrophy is a major national undertaking on behalf of The United States Jaycees and Jaycee Women to aid in the fight that willhopefully result in a cure of neuromuscular disease. In the years since the adoption of the program at the national level, Jaycees and Jaycee Women all across America have raised over 14 milliondollars for the Muscular Dystrophy research programs. Each year more than 3,000 Jaycee chapters conduct various fundraising programs, with the finalcheck presentation being made by the president of The U.S. Jaycees, to Jerry Lewis on the Labor Day Telethon. Among the unique and creative fundraising projects conducted at the local level are the sale of invisible gold fish, raffling off of an entire home that was built with donated materials and labor, and the staging of the Annual Muscular Dystrophy Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament, hosted by the Hilton Head Jaycees in South Carolina. Several big name celebrities have appeared at national Jaycee functions to promote the program, including Jerry Lewis, David Hartman and Wayne Newton. The leadership of The U.S. Jaycees has made a major commitment to the cause by limitingthe charitable fundraising activities at the national level to this one program. A major promotional effort involving local and state organizations has been the development of a comprehensive incentive program. The top Jaycee and Jaycee Women chapters in each state receive beautiful plaques each year for raising the largest sum of money. Jaycees have the opportunity of winning a free trip to Las Vegas by reaching their predetermined goals. championship match with the winning team representing that state at the International BB Gun Match, the third largest shooting event in the world. Shooting Education was developed into a national priority program in 1963 when Jaycees began searching for an effective instructional program to teach youngsters the basic skills of safe gun handling and good marksmanship. In the spring of that year, The U.S. Jaycees and Daisy, the world's oldest and largest manufacturer of non-powder guns and ammunition, joined forces to create the Shooting Education program. Shooting Education is a program that satisfies a community need that becomes more urgent each year as the hunter-shooter population grows and open land areas shrink. Most gun accidents involving persons between the ages of 8 and 14 are directly related to improper gun handling. The need for well-organized and concise instruction in proper gun handling and marksmanship has now become a communitywide responsibility_

EDUCATION

The Shooting Education program is designed to teach responsible gun handling to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 14. The four basic ingredients of the program are education, safety, enjoyment and competition. In past years, the Jaycee Shooting Education program has instructed several millionyoungsters. This year, over 2,500 chapters willinvolveover 500,000young people in the program. In the area of competition, each state holds a

The U.S. Jaycees is presently promoting several programs in the Governmental Affairs area. Each of these programs is designed to help Jaycee chapters get involvedwith citizens at the grassroots level. IMPACT - explains how Jaycee chapters can have an IMPACT on local, state, and national elections. The elements of IMPACT are; An intensified and expanded Get-Out-The-Vote and voter registration programs; An effort to bring about Candidates Debates and forums designed to help bring about more such events at alllevels of the election process on a year round basis; Public relations possibilities to aid chapters gain valuable publicity. The U.S. Jaycees has been involved in Get-Out-TheVote since 1925.It is the longest-running program in the Jaycee movement. The more Candidates Debates there are, the more informed the voters can be. And the more informed voters make more informed choices. Jaycees can make an IMPACT in local, state, and national elections.

State Model Leqislature is truly a rare experience for many Jaycees. At a State Model Legislature, the Jaycee becomes an elected delegate voting on pressing issues at his state capitol. This practical experience teaches Jaycees the meaning of compromise and role playing in the governmental process. The Model Legislative program puts the Jaycee in the shoes of his representative or congressman. Bills for this program are drafted from the local communities and are sponsored by Jaycee chapters throughout the state. Many Jaycee bills that were passed in State Model Legislature were later introduced into the actual state legislature and became law. Get Out the Vote is a program designed to accomplish three objectives. First, to register all voting-age citizens in local communities. Second, to make the public aware of where the candidates stand on the issues of the day. This can be done through local media, candidates' nights or open chapter meetings. Finally, the program shows the chapter various ways to get out the vote - ways such as posting the location of polls, providing transportation, publicizing public transportation routes and timetables and baby sitting services. Issues and Action is a publication mailed to all local chapters and state officers four times a year. It presents current, factual information on issues that the elected, national Jaycee leadership has decided affect the philosophy and direction of our organization. After reading about an issue, each officer and chapter member is encouraged to take action on the issue or issues presented. In addition to presenting issues, various phases of the Governmental Affairs program will be highlighted in each-issue. We will pass along ideas on Governmental Affairs programs that local chapters are runmng.
