surprised to see that a crap ton of movies had come out. With the upcoming school year and my complete lack of motivation I have fallen quite behind but I will do my best to catch up and Capitan America seems as good of a place to start as any. I have high hopes for the Avengers movie. It’s directed by oss Whedon! one of my favorite directors"writers of all time. It has an e#cellent cast and the movies that have come out so far have not by any means been terrible. $o it was with the bar set reasonably high I cautiously sat down for an evening with the first avenger. %ow let me just say before we delve to far into the ritualistic ripping and nit picking let me just e#plain my relationship with the Capitan. I never really liked Capitan America. &e always seemed like the silliest of the avengers '(es! even more so than )hor* mainly because he was simply a propaganda machine taken too far. )he movie could have done two things with addressing the ridiculous amount of patriotism that Capitan America embodies. +irstly they could have played it all ironically and used it to poke fun at the cheesy ,support the war effort- ads of the ./01’s. 2r they could play it all straight faced and make $teve 3ogers the truly good guy! boy scout he always was. I am quite proud of director oe ohnston '2ctober $ky! )he Wolfman* for choosing the second option. $teve 3ogers starts out as a scrawny! but determined youth form 4rooklyn. &e tries and fails to enlist in the 5$ army during WWII. &e gets beat up but never gives up! he’s patriotic but is not one of those gun toting nut jobs form a call of duty game. In short he is just the quintessential good guy. )his is all done without the slightest trace of parody or irony! and it works really well. After being turned down again $teve! still determined! walks into the recruiting station at the worlds fair. )here he meets 6r. 7rskin '$tanley )ucci* a 8erman born doctor who is working for the 5$’s super secret super soldier program. &e wants $teve to sign up and after some training montages and some cautious flirting with agent 9eggy Carter '&ayley Atwell* he is selected for the ,beffupification- process. )he process works but unfortunately a saboteur kills the doctor and destroys the super soldier serum. )he project is canceled and $teve is told he can ether rot in a lab or go on a tour across America promoting the buying of war bonds. $teve decides something is better than nothing and gets dressed up in a silly costume and tours the country. &owever when he goes over seas to entertain the troops he finds that he isn’t doing what he feels he was meant for. &e decides to stop being just a poster boy and go and fight the evil %a:is! or more accurately the secret actual enemy of the 5$ ,&ydra.- %ow I know is an important part of the captain America mythos but it has always bothered me. Why can’t he just fight %a:is; What are they all of a sudden not evil enough; )he guys Cap’ beats up have no faces! and dress in things I’d e#pect the bad guys from 8I oe to be wearing. I imagine the conversation with the writers and creators of Captain America went something like this< ,$o we have this guy right; Who has been kicked out of the %a:i’s for being too evil and cra:y but instead of just leaving it at that lets make him look 7=AC)>( like $atan.-
. 2verall I would recommend Captain America. )he rest of his team does nothing but to distract form much more important characters.Well that’s because it’s Captain America. %ow this is where the bigger nerds get to have their fun and snootily point out that this was in issue number 01@!ABC or whatever because aside form . oe. )he impression that I got is that these actors actually liked the movie they were in which! in my opinion at least! is how you get good performances..one liners.in this case meaning that it avoids too many cheesy! unnecessary .hero’s journey.DDDD gives a decent performance! . )he writing is solid! .in this case meaning that while not 2scar worthy he definitely understands his character and know what emotions are.solid.At this point I am tempted to make two comparisons! and what kind of man?child would I be if I did not effortlessly give into my temptations.I.the hero is almost )22 much of a good guy! the villains are overly evil! and the classic . 7ven the hilariously large mustache on the 4ritish bloke can’t hide the pointlessness of his character.decent.step is missing the simply because $teve 3ogers is just so god damned determined. +irstly I will say an aspect that I really liked is the few action bits that almost felt like the first and third Indiana ones movies! capturing the feel of the charming! almost cartoonish scenes when Indi stealthily beats up %a:is. )he second less admirable comparison I want to make is to 8. 4ucky is in the movie and he works! his character serves a purpose! he is the friend that offers support but is at the same time there to remind our hero of his limitations. It wasn’t a disappointment and if you stay after the credits you get to see a little trailer for the Avengers that will help tide you over till ne#t year! although if you do stay you will piss of the cleaning crew to no end. %ow a lot of my complaints can be counteracted with the argument . As for the rest of the cast there are no standout performances but no one seems to be phoning it in ether. %ot only because all the bad guys look like plastic +isher?price dolls but because of the poorly crow?barred in racially diverse team that fallows Captain America around for a couple of minutes.4uckyI never knew of any side kicks.
