• In this poem, poet through the physician’s voice ,emphasizes on overcoming the “contraptions” or the mental blocks that were rendering the poet incapable of walking without the crutches. • Similarly, the story of Ashutosh, ( student of Christ University) lies in line with the poets experience.
• Like in the poem the physician insults the poet, in the same way the coach humiliates and does not accept Ashutosh in his basketball team. • Physician adopts different forms of persuasion, explanation, firmness and finally a cruel insult in the same way as the coach does to Ashutosh.
• This makes us realise that when everything else fails the challenge thrown by insulting laughter succeeds • Provoking that when a human being is insulted his self esteem does not permit him 2 accept it lying low.
The message that the poet wants to convey to the readers through this simple poem which deals with one of the most complex ideas about human nature ,i.e., the inability to do something due to a mental block in our psyche is that it doesn’t matter how weak one might be physically, but one should have strong will power.
We realise that taking an innovative measure, helps to motivate a person and forces us to have a rethinking on the way we look at ourselves as all of us depend on some form or other of crutches to avoid responsibility.
• The entire poem revolves around one
central theme, a block in ones mind can render one incapable of carrying out desirable activities and make one dependant. • We should take steps to overcome the various fears and apprehensions that make us helpless.
