The Crucible dramatises the events surrounding the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts in 1692. Generally regarded as an allegory of McCarthyism in 1950s America, The Crucible is powered by the themes of mass hysteria, paranoia and the consequences of authoritarian control. However, at its heart is one mans struggle to come to terms with his own conscience as a community begins to turn in on itself and rapidly unravel. God is dead! You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore!
