The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

Wickedly, Wonderful Flavia, A Chemistry Genius And Amateur Sleuth

This book introduces us to Flavia de Luce, an 11 year old living with her 2 older sisters and father in a manor house outside of a small village in 1950's England. Her mother, an adventurer, is recently deceased. Flavia is an intelligent, quirky child, part a character out of a Gorey story, part Wednesday Addams, and part Marie Curie (one of her heroines). She is particularily interested in poisons and has taken over the abandoned laboratory in their somewhat run-down home. Flavia does not get along with her sisters and delights in coming up with devious methods to antagonize them such as poison ivy infused lipstick for her vain old er sister. Her sisters are equally devious. Flavia discovers a dead body in their garden and begins to investigate the death to exonerate her father who is the primary suspect. We get to see her investigation as she zips around town on her mother's old bicycle, rechristened Gladys. I thought the story was delightful and was wickedly fun. While some think that an 11 year old would not be up to the task, I found the character quite believable and the the mystery was good. I look forward to Flavia's next adventure.
