Volume & The Mole

Is there a way to determine the volume of a gas if you know that you have 6.02 x 10 23 particles of it? Not a chance!! Gases extend forever! They can be any volume. One mole of any gas occupies 22.4L of space (volume) at STP Standard Temperature (0oC) and Pressure (101.3 kPa). 22.4L is known has the molar volume. Example: How many moles of nitrogen are in 8.2L of N2 gas?

What is the mass of 8.2L of N2 gas?

What is the mass of 15.7L of chlorine gas?

Gas Density & Molar Mass

We can use density (measured in kg/m3) of a gas at STP to calculate the molar mass of the gas. Example: Determine the molar mass of the 1 mole compound carbon & oxygen. The density of this compound is 1.964 g/L at STP. Is this compound carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide?
