I have one que stion a bout " Find the highe st powe r of 72 in 100!" I think the re is no ne e d of finding highe st powe r of 8 a s the highe st powe r of 9 will be le ss tha n tha t of 8 a nd so the highe st powe r of 9 will be the highte st powe r of 72 in 100!.

Hi TG, Tha ts a nice a rticle . Could you ple a se e la bora te how ca n we find the num be r of ze roe s a t the e nd of n! if n! is e x pa nded in som e ba se 'k ' othe r than 10 (where k m a y be a prim e num be r, a com posite num be r or a pe rfe ct squa re or a pe rfe ct cube of som e prim e or com posite num be r) ? e .g. How m a ny ze roe s will be the re in the e nd of 25! whe n ex pa nde d in ba se 14 ? Vik a s

Hi Vik a s I a m trying to a nswe r your que ry. I k now tha t it was not a sk e d from m e but i don't m ind. How m a ny ze roe s will be the re in the e nd of 25! when e x pa nde d in ba se 14 ? Look how do we conve rt a num be r from ba se 10 to a ny othe r base . W e divide the num be r by re quire d ba se a nd wha te ve r is the re m a inder is the unit digit of the num be r in tha t base a nd the quotie nt obta ine d is furthe r divide d to ge t the te n's digit a nd soon. Now there will be a s m a ny tra iling ze roes in the e x pa nsion of a num be r of ba se 10 in som e othe r ba se a s m any tim e s the original num ber is divisible by the given ba se . O r in other words the highe st powe r of the base num ber tha t can divide the give n num be r. In this ca se our num be r is 25! a nd we wa nt to find how m a ny tra iling ze roe s will be the re whe n this num be r is e x pa nded in ba se 14. Tha t m ea ns wha t is the highst powe r of 14 tha t ca n divide the num be r i.e . = 3

Swa stik , If x1*x 2*x 3*.....*x n=C, whe re C is a consta nt, the n the le ast va lue of x 1+x 2+x 3+.......+xn is whe n x 1=x 2=x 3=......=x n. Applying sa m e logic he re , le ast va lue pf p+q+r+s occurs whe n p=q=r=s the re fore p^4=10!. Solving this we get, p= 43.64 The re fore , p+q+r+s=174.58 ~= 175. But I think in C AT, such a com plica te d num be r a s 10! would not com e . Ca lcula ting fourth root of 10! is not a jok e ... Am I right TG??? Ple a se cla rify !!!

Hi TG, Tha nk s for such a nice a rticle . I wonde r whe the r we ca n't find the highe st power of 72 in 100! using the first m e thod. [ the wa y we did for highe st powe r of 30 in 50! ] ? A-> fa ctors of 72 a re 2*2*2*3*3. Since 3 is the highe st foctor, we find the highe st powe r of 3 in 100! = 47. So 47 should be the a nswe r. ?? Am i ge tting things wrong som e whe re ?

In the se cond m ethod we find the highest powe r of a n in x !

Since 72= 2 3 X 3 2 , we ha ve to use the se cond m ethod. Also the re a re enough 2's in 100! so we sim ply find the no. of 3's in 100! using the se cond m e thod which will com e to 24.

Hi TG, Tha t's re ally a nice a rticle . but i ha ve a doubt in one of the e x a m ple s given a bove . the one in which we find the no. of divisors of 15!. In the ex a m ple , first we find the indiviua l highe st powe rs of a ll the prim e fa ctors in 15!. The re fore we ha ve 15! = (2^11) * (3^6) * (5^3) * (7^2) * (11) * (13). And the no of divisors is ca lcula te d a s : 12 * 7 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 2 = 4032. i a m una ble to unde rstand this ste p, could u ple ase he lp. Thnx in adva nce .

De a r Va run The a nswe r is 3.... The proce ss is ....42=2*3*7......as u ha ve to find the m a x power of 42 ; so u ha ve to che ck the m a x powe r of 2,3,7...in this ca se it is cle ar the m a x powe r of 7 will be the a nswe r (..i think that u ca m e to know from the a bove the roy a nd e x a m ple a lso...)...so no nessa ry to find the powe r of 2,3....now to find the m a x power 7 , just conside r the m ultiple of 7 in the given num be r...he re 42,91,63....so the answe r is 3......
