There is a subtle but important difference between a jacket sitting
on your shoulders versus resting on them. Our Vespa jacket knows
how to behave. With its soft shoulders, and easy going construction,
there is finally a jacket that takes the formality out of looking formal.

Senior Editor Nate Chapnick keeps
his fnger on the pulse of the latest
mens luxury lifestyle trends. Hailing
from the South, Chapnick has tested
hundreds of cars and SUVs throughout
his career covering the automotive
industry. Chapnick graduated magna
cum laude from Georgetown Univer-
sity and currently travels the world to
find the best products for the modern
man. Chapnicks work also can be
seen on yahoo.com, forbesautos.com,
forbeslife.com, msn.com, edmunds.
com, and in the US Airways and Amer-
ica West in-fight magazines.
Atlanta native Bret Love has been
covering arts, entertainment, restau-
rants and travel for 18 years, inter-
viewing everyone from presidents and
mayors to rock stars and movie stars
for publications such as AirTrans Go,
Amtraks Arrive, the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution, Destination Marriott
and Rolling Stone. In addition to his
award-winning freelance work, he is
also music editor of Georgia Music
magazine and editor-in-chief of Green
Global Travel. In his spare time, he
loves boating, outdoor adventure and
performing improv comedy.
A lover of all things food, culture and
entertainment, Jonathan Baker is
a producer for Turner Broadcasting
and is the creator of a lifestyle blog
called Simple Classic Living. Hes a
regular contributor to Te Atlantan,
Houzz.com and Citysearch.com,
and when hes not directing content,
throwing parties or dining with the
Buford Highway Adventure Club,
you can fnd him on the golf course.
In this issue, Baker hit the greens at
Sea Island, shared insiders scoop on
the Masters and more.
Award-winning freelance writer/editor
Wendy Bowman-Littler splits her
time between Buckhead and Laguna
Beach, Calif., where she has a second
home. In her spare time, the veteran
journalist loves to Jazzercise; to explore
California; and to work on compiling
a book of life lessons that professional
football players, coaches and others
involved in the game have learned
from both playing and being involved
in the sport, and that have served
them well down the road. Check out
her fndings on the state of the real
estate market in Residential Report.
Contributing Editor Elina Fuhrman,
who frequently interviews celebrities
for Modern Luxury, is used to them
guarding their privacy. Aaron Eck-
harts openness and authenticity was
refreshing and inspiring. He was so
real, so honest and so in the moment,
says Fuhrman. We could have gone
on for another hour, it was one of my
favorite interviews. Fuhrman has
contributed to CNN, The New York
Times, Conde Nast Traveler, the At-
lanta Journal-Constitution, Travelgirl,
jetsetter.com, orbitz.com and numer-
ous other publications and websites.
Jenn Thornton, a freelance writer
and editor, has worked on dead-
line for her entire professional life,
which she regards as something of a
minor feat. Having worked as both
a magazine staff editor and an edi-
torial director, freelancing has al-
lowed her to pen articles on myriad
subjects for both regional and na-
tional publications. In this issue,
she chatted with Kevin Salwen, the
Atlanta businessman whose family
gave up half of everything that they
owned for charity and told the tale
in The Power of Half.

PUBLISHERS NOTE MARCH/APRIL 2011
ey say a mans best friend is his dog, and that may
be true, but allow me to suggest what may be a more
helpful alternative to even the most lovable canine.
Gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to your
most esteemed new companion, Mens Book Atlanta.
e response that weve received from the advertising,
public relations and media community has been
overwhelmingly supportive. Everyone here at Modern
Luxury felt that the city needed a magazine dedicated
to, and written for, Atlantas most inuential power
players, and here it is. I am so very proud to provide
you with a magazine that is sure to serve as your go-to
guide for the latest in fashion, travel, auto, food, drink,
real estate, nancial investments, sports... the list goes
on. Whether youre interested in watches or weekend
getaways, sporting clays or sports cars, I invite you to
savor the pages of whats guaranteed to be your new
favorite read.
is magazine is about a lifestyle, whether it be
aspirational or one that is already in play. Its about
highlighting Atlantas past, present and future as it
pertains to men. Whether its celebrating the life of
Robert Woodru in a new exhibition at Emory or
uncovering a new hidden gem like Caf Circas private
cigar club, Mens Book is here to serve you with the best
of what Atlanta has to oer discerning gentlemen.
Our editorial team invites you to step behind the
ropes, and gives you access to the city like no other
magazine can. Take a look at the game plan of the
Atlanta Silverbacks Rodrigo Rios. After a two-year
hiatus, the professional franchise was able to recruit its
former El Capitan to the new role of director of soccer.
Or if you prefer fairways and greens, be sure to check
out our insiders guide to attending the Masters. Prefer
to tee it up yourself? Check out our Weekender travel
feature on the incredible courses (and accommodations)
on Sea Island.
From departments like Top Shelf to the Last
Word, this magazine was designed with you in mind.
We cant wait to hear what you think. Find us on
Facebook, where you can share your comments and
learn where the next Mens Book event will take place.
Again, I hope you enjoy reading the issue as much as
we enjoyed creating it for you. And continue to spread
the word about Mens Book Atlanta!
Cheers,
cvanduyne@ modernluxury.com

Wine Auction March 23-26 marks
Cate Candlers frst year as the events
wine auction manager. Candler gathers
together the special guests, winemakers,
chefs and wine lots in what has been a
yearlong process of coordination.
Its a Rubiks Cube, Candler says.
We have so many wonderful vintners and
chefs who have been long-time supporters,
and we want to highlight all of them, but
we also want to provide an opportunity for
new vintners to share in the spotlight. Tis
years special guest, Michael Browne from
Kosta Browne, represents the ultimate in
pinot noir winemaking, and we wanted
to celebrate his accomplishments. Rare
and collectible winesespecially those
not available at retailand wine pairings
with exclusive trips, elegant wine dinners
and other VIP events are favorites with
our bidders, so we work very hard on
developing creative and unique auction
lots. A few of them are priceless!
Of the many events taking place
as part of the wine auction, the Dine
Around Dinners are the most exciting for
Candler. We pair a chef with a couple of
winemakers, and they all work together
to create a prix fxe menu with wine
pairings for each course, Candler says.
We feel these dinners are an excellent
way to introduce younger, budding wine
afcionados and collectors to the wine
auction, and it
gives them an
opportunity to
get to know a
local chef and a
winemaker. Every
time I pass a school

Its the hair.
I started
losing my hair in my
mid 30s, and by my
late 40s most of it was gone. I hated it. Some
men are comfortable with their baldnessI
simply wasnt one of them. I wasnt ready to
look that old, that soon. (My wife didnt have a
problem with it, but I did.)
For years, I would whine and complain
to my stylist as I stared in the mirror of his
salon, the fuorescent lights refecting cruelly
of my shiny scalp. Greg, look at me, I would
say every month, Ive become an old man. I
cant believe it. Periodically, I thought about
having a hair transplant, but I was afraid it
just wouldnt look good and that people would
know I had done something. Ten came
the day I ran into an attorney acquaintance of
mine, about my age, whom I hadnt seen for
about a year. He looked great, and I told him
so. Its not fair, I said. You keep looking
younger, and I keep looking older! He looked
at me and said, Its the hair. Clueless, I asked,
What do you mean, its the hair? I had a
hair transplant, he replied. Youve got to be
kidding me, I said incredulously, coming in for
a closer look at a totally natural looking head
of hair, theres no way thats a hair transplant.
Well, it was, and it was the key to making the
decision I had been struggling with for 12
years. It was obvious to me that hair trans-
plants had come a long way!
Tose are my unretouched before and
afer photos. At the time, I was a board-certi-
fed neurosurgeon, and I was in the fnal stages
of career burnout. Te discovery that hair
transplant surgeons all come from other felds
of medicine and surgery was an Aha! moment:
I realized that I had found not only a solution
to my baldness, but a new career. A fellowship
in hair restoration surgery and a few thousand
hair transplant procedures later, I am now one
of a handful of surgeons in the country to have
received additional certifcation by the Ameri-
can Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. Over
the years, it has given me great satisfaction to
provide for others the same thrill I experienced
when I got my hair back. I always consider it
an honor when someone chooses me to per-
form his or her hair transplant, and I feel it is
my responsibility to see that his or her decision
will be one of the best they have ever made.
My experienced team and I welcome you to
visit and discuss your hair loss concerns with
us in a discreet setting.

Top Dogs
Atlantas headiest burger havens stay ahead of the curve by dishing up some
serious gourmet hot dogs just in time for warm weather. | By Jonathan Baker |
It was 2008 when the 10pm double cheeseburger at Holeman & Finch became a cult obsession for Atlanta
gourmands. The gooey, late-night monstrosity looked like an ordinary burger but tasted better in every aspect, from
the house-ground chuck to the homemade bun. Not surprisingly, burgers began popping up on even the most
decadent of menus, and highbrow burger joints have been opening at a fast clip ever since.
Now, as hot dogs are beginning to show up as foodies next it item, three of our burger stalwarts are getting
in the game with unique dogs of their own. From a fancy version topped with pickled jalapenos to a chili-covered
pup that resembles a Varsity dog on steroids, here are three hot dogs worth trying:
Yeah! Burger
1017 N. Highland Ave.
Southern Dog, $5.99
Topped with a colorful
combination of spicy
red relish, pimento
cheese and diced
onions, the Southern
Dog at Yeah! Burger is
as eye-popping as it is
delicious. Shaun Dotys
gourmand-friendly
burger joint puts a
premium on sustainable
ingredients, and this
regionally inspired
dog boasts a super
favorful Coleman
Natural grass-fed beef
frank, which sits in a
chewy white bun that
Doty conceived with
H&F Bakery. Never
imagined pimento
cheese and fery relish
on a grass-fed hot dog?
Neither had we. But the
puckering combination
pairs perfectly with
the intense meatiness,
making one instantly
wonder why this hasnt
been done before.
H&Fs hot dog follows the same magical formula used for
its massively sought-after cheeseburger: Every ingredient is
made in-house. Te frank is a by-product of the restaurants
excellent charcuterie programthe bun comes from the
H&F Bakery, fresh pickled jalapenos make up the relish
and even the accompanying ballpark yellow mustard
is an H&F original. In short, it tastes like the childhood
favorite all grown up. And unlike the limited-edition
hamburger thats gone in 10 minutes, the hot dog is
available during all dinner hours.
Grindhouse
Killer Burgers
209 Edgewood Ave.
Chili Dog, $3.74

Located in the Sweet
Auburn Curb Market,
Grindhouse is a classic
lunch counter that
slings beef patties,
sides and shakes for
the downtown working
crowd. After riding its
burger to critical and
commercial success
(with a second location
slated to open any
day), Grindhouse
expanded its basic
menu ever so slightly
to include hot dogs,
with a chili dog option.
Not surprisingly,
the chili dogs go the
simple, retro route:
Te franks are locally
sourced from Patak
Meats, come in a
super-soft potato roll
and are topped with
a wonderfully drippy,
meaty chili. Its like
a Varsity dog, but
enhanced slightly in
size and a lot in favor.
What Atlanta man

Before the Salwen family made the collective
decision to sell their 6,500-square-foot dream
home, donate profts from the sale to charity and
move into a home half its size, its patriarch, former
Wall Street Journal writer-and-editor-turned-
entrepreneur Kevin Salwen had, by all accounts,
realized the American Dream: great career,
loving family, private schools, the mansion. And
although the family had always made a point of
balancing affuence with altruism, they knew they
could do moreand did, to the astounding tune of
$800,000. The Hunger Project was the recipient
of the Salwens generous gift, as were numerous
villages in Ghana that benefted from the myriad
community resources it helped fund.
For the Salwens, scaling back still meant
living large, but in far more substantive ways. By
working and making key decisions together, they
grew closer. Helping others bridged the gaps in
their own family, redefning for themselves, and for
many people who read the acclaimed account of
their experience, The Power of Half, co-authored
by Kevin and his daughter, Hannah, what it means
to live the good life.
Is it fair to say that Te Power of Half is a redefnition
of the American Dream? Not entirely. providing
for ones family and future will always be part of the
American Dream. But our view raises the critical
question, how much is enough? thats where we
diverge from the standard accumulation track, including
where we ourselves used to be.
The Power of Half was well-received nationally.
What was the local reaction to the book? Nationally, it
was a blast being featured in Te New York Times, getting
coverage in Te New Yorker and O and
People magazines, and on Te View and
CBS Sunday Morning. Closer to home,
we were featured on many local tV,
radio and print outlets. We have spoken
at a number of churches and temples. in short, we are
very grateful and, frankly, shocked about the response
both locally and nationally.
What are some examples of philanthropic individuals
who have inspired your work and life? Te teachings of
Dr. King and gandhi are timeless and powerful. But so
are living heroes, people like the selfess Zell Kravinsky,
who gave a kidney to someone he had never met, or
John Coonrod, our friend at Te hunger project who
has devoted his life to ending world hunger and poverty
(Coonrod is the organizations executive vice president).
And, of course, the subsistence farmers we work with in
ghana who have the courage to envision and then enact
a brighter future for their families.
Te Power of Half depicts an efective example of
teamwork. What lessons can corporate leaders take
away from the book that they can apply to the way
they conduct business? one signifcant step we took
was to fatten our hierarchy for this project, in other
words, one person, one vote. Te result was that our
kids felt empowered and brought more of themselves to
the project. in addition, my wife, Joan, and i felt more
liberated to admit that we didnt know all the answers.
in the end, it made all of us more confdent, humbler
and better teammates.
To what do you attribute the greater emphasis on
philanthropy in todays business world? i think
there are three factors: one, some company executives,
especially founding CEos, bring a desire to improve
the quality of the world through their

work; two, a lot of philanthropy
comes from enlightened self-interest, companies trying
to help their businesses through good works or as a
result of external pressure; oil companies and Wal-Mart
are good examples. [But], i dont think this makes
their charity less useful to society. [And three], people
are demanding greater responsibility
from companies they work for and
do business with. Companies [have]
responded by becoming more generous
and caring about causes.

So how signifcant is the idea of greater
purpose in todays business culture?
Te best companies have fgured out
that they can fll the emotional needs of
employees in a deeper, more purposeful
way. Tose companies typically fnd that
they are able to attract and retain better
employees in the creative class. google
is a great example, with their policy that
employees can spend 20 percent of their
work time on personal projects that are
important to them. Employees feel good
and work harder; the company gets lots
of new innovation that way. A win-win.
Do you feel that fnancial success fosters or hinders
the need in people to do more for communities
and individualsdoes it create a deeper sense of
social responsibility? i actually dont think monetary
success matters much. Weve found that poor people
feel a need to give just as much as the afuent, maybe
more. its really a question of how willing individuals
are to pause long enough to recognize what truly
brings them happiness and satisfaction. tVs and cars
dont deliver long-term happiness; connections do. All
socioeconomic classes realize that.
A primary lesson of the book that I took away is that
time is currency. investment can be time or money. its
a matter of what resources you have that the world needs
and that you can rationally part with. giving money is
crucial, but giving of yourself is more meaningful.
Why did you choose to partner with a global
organization rather than a national or Atlanta-
based charity? We already were working hard in Atlanta
to improve the quality of life here for those in need.
After we decided to sell our house, we spent a year as
a family discussing how to invest the proceeds and
decided that we could make a diference both locally
and globally. But it really comes down to this: how do
you defne community: your street, neighborhood, city,
state, country or the world? We view the world as our
community. Well always work hard here in Atlanta, but
we have the capacity to work further from home as well.
How long have you been involved with Atlanta
Habitat for Humanity? ive been involved for about
15 years, as a builder, a project leader and now as a board
member. its such a brilliant model for a nonproft, from
building alongside the homeowner to the fun of being
part of the volunteer construction team to the philosophy
of a hand up not a handout. if youve never built on
a house, take a saturday and get out there; its a life-
changer for you and for the homeowner. ive taken both
my kids for their 16th birthdays (the minimum building
age, with adult supervision), and they cant get enough.
And, fnally, how has this experience led you to a
richer life? Cutting part of our lifestyle in half made our
family whole. We have a deeper, more interconnected
series of relationships with each other. Weve made
friends within an inspiring community of givers we
never knew were out there. Weve learned so much about
poverty and about how resourceful and undervalued the
lowest classes of our society are. Makes me realize how
dumb we were not to do this sort of thing earlier.
Giving money is crucial, but giving of yourself is more meaningful.

Walking Emorys campus, its impossible not to feel the presence of Robert
W. Woodruf. Te man dubbed Mr. Anonymous for his behind-the-
scenes generosity, contributed more time and money to Emory than to
any other venture. Fittingly, a larger-than-life statue, complete with his
signature hat and cigar, stands just outside the library which bears his name.
Its there, on the third foor of the Woodruf Library, where a striking
mixed-media exhibit is currently on display: Te Future Belongs to the
Discontented: Te Life & Legacy of Robert W. Woodruf. Its a rare scene
chronicling the private life of the man who dropped out of college and
worked his way up to become president of Coca-Cola, all while helping to
establish Atlanta as the capital of the South.
One of my biggest goals was to let people know who Mr. Woodruf
was, and how we continue to beneft today from his legacy, his vision and
his foresight, exhibit curator Randy Gue explains.
Tis point is clearly driven home as the exhibit outlines his infuence on the
city: It was Woodruf who put Coca-Cola on the world stage, taking it from a
local soda fountain-based business to a globally exporting bottling company. It
was Woodruf who supported Atlanta Mayors William B. Hartsfeld and Ivan
Allen Jr. to ensure the city took a moderate approach to civil rights, branding
Atlanta as Te City Too Busy To Hate. It was Woodruf who saw the need to
elevate Atlantas hospitals, so his frst gift to Emory was the Winshape Cancer
Clinic. In fact, he gave so generously to Emory over his lifetimeto the tune
of $105 millionthat he single-handedly transformed it from a regional college
to a top-tier university.
Since he didnt keep a journal and rarely spoke in public, much of his
infuence went on behind the scenes. Gue has spent more
than three years compiling Woodrufs story, and the
result is an exhibit that feels overwhelmingly personal,
like youre sneaking a peek behind a closed door.
There is a humorous correspondence from
Woodrufs father that reveals a mischievous teenager
taking money out of his dads bank account to buy new
clothes... just before getting kicked out of Emory as a
freshman. Telegrams written in code reveal important business dealings
during his time at Coca-Cola. A photography exhibit of his south Georgia
estate shows photos of Woodruf hunting with the likes of Ty Cobb and
President Eisenhower, but also shots of his beloved plantation employees.
Its a visual summary of Woodrufs passions, his heart and intentions to
make Atlanta great. But according to Gue, the most telling artifact is a
small, century-old picture.
Out of everything we compiled, my favorite piece is a portrait taken
in 1909, Gue says. Most people during that time, regardless of class rank,
showed up to have their picture taken in their Sunday best. But he believed
so much in work and was so happy to shovel sand for cents a day, he got his
photo taken in his work clothes. It sort of summarized his belief in work.
He knew if he just got a chance, hed be successful.
Te Future Belongs to the Discontented: Te Life & Legacy of Robert W. Woodruf,
is presented by Te Coca-Cola Company. Open daily through March 25 in
the Robert W. Woodruf Librarys Schatten Gallery, 540 Asbury Circle. Free
and open to the public, 404.727.6887 or marbl.library.emory.edu.

When you walk inside the gates of the Masters Golf
Tournament, time stands still. Not only is the property
prettier than on television, but there are no cell
phones, no corporate logos, no electronic scoreboards,
no blimps overhead. Food and drinks are cheap, and
expected behavior is sensible. Te feld is host to new
stars and past champions, and patrons are the most
polite, knowledgeable and best-dressed fans in sports.
Te purity of it all is downright magical. Anyone who
is fortunate enough to go would admit that its an
honor just to attend the tournament. With that in
mind, we present our insiders guidewritten by our
reporter who spent the last two years on the grounds
of Augusta National covering the tournamentto
attending the Masters.
Five Things For the First-Timer
First of, parking is free. And theres tons of it. Follow
the signs when you get of at Washington Road. Second,
unless you have a super-specifc request, they wont run
out of merchandise (except on Sunday). Wait to buy
Masters gear so you dont have to carry it around all
day. Tird, the clubhouse is on the highest point of the
property, so when youre trying to fgure out how to get
back from Amen Corner, just walk uphill. Fourth, you
absolutely must eat a $1.50 Masters sandwich, either the
egg salad or the pimento cheese. And fnally, dont do
anything stupid like get your badge taken away because
you snuck your cell phone in.
Attending a Practice Round
Practice rounds (Monday-Wednesday) are tough to plan
for because there are no set pairings or times. But you can
rely on manually controlled signs that constantly update
who is on the course and what time they teed of. (Insider
advice: Tiger usually practices either really early or really
late.) Roars, groans and laughs always come from No. 16,
where players try to skip balls across the water and onto
the green. Te Par 3 Contest starts in the early afternoon

Taking a Junior With You
Masters badge holders can take a junior 16 and younger

or (for the rest of us), if you get a pair of tickets and your
buddy cant go, consider taking your youngster. What
kid wouldnt adore walking around with his or her dad

For the Opening Rounds
Getting up early to get to Augusta before 8AM on
Tursday is tough, but seeing Arnold Palmer hit the
ceremonial frst tee shot through the cool morning mist
will be something you remember forever. Plus, if you
get there early, you can put a few Masters chairs down
and then return to them later. Best seat in the house is

For the Weekend
Tings move at a slower pace on the weekend. Te feld

later groups. Get there when the gates open to speed
walk (Running of the Bulls-style) to put your chair
down at the No. 18 green. It will be worth it when you
have a perfect view when the fnal putt drops. When
following the leaders, try a leap frog approach: Watch
them tee of No. 1, then head down to the No. 2 green.
once theyve come through, go to the No. 7 green and
so forth. If youre lucky enough to attend Sunday, stay
until the very end. Seeing the green jacket ceremony
under the lights on the big putting green is a once-in-

At age 34, Rodrigo Rios is living his dream. Te former
captain of the Atlanta Silverbacks has been tasked with
the lofty goal of rebuilding the professional soccer team
for its debut this spring as part of the North American
Soccer League, and its exactly what hes always wanted
to do. I always knew that soccer would end one day,
Rios says. My dream job was to be a director.
A native of Santiago, Chile, the Silverbacks new
director of soccer may look the part of international
playboy, but hes equal parts business-minded
professional, dedicated pro athlete and family man.
Soccers been in my life since before I could walk, Rios
says. My dad took me to the stadium every weekend,
no matter who was playingit was about the sport, not
the competition.
At the not-so-ripe age of 10, Rios told his parents
that he wanted to play professionally. By 15, he was
getting paid to play the game he loved, and at 16, he
had gone pro on the Chilean national team. In 2005,
Rios came to the United States
to play for the LA Galaxy, but
soon after, he moved to Atlanta
and signed with a new team, the
Silverbacks. I fell in love with the
idea of starting something new, he says.
Rios dedication to the sport is paying of in his
career of the feld as well. When the Silverbacks ceased
play as part of the United Soccer League in 2008, Rios
stuck around, continuing to manage Silverbacks Park,
a mainstay of the community. And now that the team
is resuming play as part of the more esteemed NASL,
their go-to guy was an obvious choice.
Were trying to build something more than a team
here, Rios says. In the process of recruiting, hes working
to achieve a balance of younger and more experienced
playersa group that can grow together. At the time of
our interview, the newly signed players were due to arrive
(from around the world) in Atlanta within the week, and
Jose Manuel Abundis, an Olympian and major soccer
star in Mexico, had been named the Silverbacks coach.
To be able to work and help players, especially
young players, to see their dreams come true, its really
great when you can be a part of that, Rios says. Te
Silverbacks play their frst game against the Minnesota
Stars on April 9 at 7:30pm.

Report
Six of the citys top real estate
professionals share their take on the
state of the market and whats to come.
| By Wendy Bowman-Littler |
While Atlantas high-end housing market
remains sluggish, buyers can still beneft
from low interest rates and snag attractive
deals on current inventory before prices
climb. The overall consensus? Opportunities
abound for consumers hoping to buy
property in neighborhoods that previously
would have been considered out of reach.
What is the state of the luxury home and
condo market in Atlanta?
DaviD BOEHMiG We have growing sales and
decreasing inventoryboth good signs of a
market moving back in balance. In the metro
area, there are 26 percent fewer $750,000-
plus homes on the market compared to last
year at this time.

KEvin GRiECO We still have some good inventory
available in the $500,000-and-up market.
Qualifed buyers arent having as difcult of
a time fnding fnancing options, and that
is helping some of the upper-end product
fnally move.
PaulinE MillER Inventory is up, keeping home values
down. However, due to low interest rates and a
strong relocation market, demand is strong. We
expect to see an improvement in home values
in 2012, as more and more consumers take
advantage of the buyers market.
WaDE HunDlEY Te market bottom has happened,
and things are starting to look up. Teres still
a fair amount of product in the market, but
the properties that are high-quality and have
owners that can support them are going to
do the best.
What can consumers expect to see happen
in Atlantas luxury home and condo market
in 2011?
BOEHMiG Increasing sales, as measured by
the number of homes sold and closed, but
not much of an appreciation in prices.
In fact, home prices may soften just a bit
more before they begin heading back up,
depending on how fast foreclosed homes
reenter the market.

GRi ECO Given the fact we have no new
product currently being built, we have
no place left to go except a strong sellers
market. Granted, we are still three to fve
years away from that. Many of the newer
buildings, such as Viewpoint, Gallery and
terminus, are nearly sold out. Tis leaves
the very high-end buildings like sovereign,
Te ritz-Carlton residences and Te st.
regis. I suspect we will see some slight
downward price movement in the very
upper end throughout the year.
StEvE PalM We hit a new bottom last quarter, and
its still tough right now. I think were going
to be up in 2011. the economy improved
slightly. spring 2012 is when youre going to
start seeing some serious improvements.
What types of luxury homes/condos have sold
recently in Atlanta?
GRiECO Te st. regis sold one condo for $4.5
million in september and another for $2.9
million in November. the ritz-Carlton
residences sold two condos for $1.1 million
each in November. sovereign closed two
units at $1.3 million in early winter. Tere
are buyers out there paying huge dollars to
be in these buildings.
PalM One home listed for $4.5 million recently
sold at $2.8 million, while another $2.8
million property went for $1.4 million.
What types of homes/condos will continue
to be a popular choice for homeowners?
BOEHMiG More manageable homes, in terms
of size, and homes that ofer proximity to
the arts, restaurants, entertainment and
places of interest, especially ones with high
walkability scores.
GRiECO Condos with access to shops, restaurants and
night life. service-rich buildings are also hugely
popular. Buyers who are spending their hard-earned
dollars also are more focused on the construction and
quality of fnishes than ever before.
Will it continue to be a challenging time for sellers?
GRiECO Its really up to them. In fourth quarter 2010, 66
out of every 100 listings failed to sellmost likely due
to overpricing. and of the 34 that did sell, 22 required a
price reduction. Tat means 88 out of every 100 listings
were overpriced. sellers who are priced correctly are
getting multiple ofers.
MillER Until the supply is reduced, values cannot
improve. However, as long as pricing is in line with
current market value, the property will sell, typically
within 60 days of the initial ofering.
Can buyers expect to get good prices?
MillER Yes, brand-new homes with all the bells and whistles
are now available at 60 percent of their original price.
WiGHt M. MixOn One of the best opportunities that this
market presents is for the person who is looking to
upgrade. If they are willing to take a hit on selling their
current home, they will more than make up for it when
they go to buy a more expensive one.
PalM Buyers will continue to get really good prices. We
went back to 1998 prices in 2010. With interest rates
almost at historic lows, frst-time buyers are able to get
these high-priced homes like never before. Investors are
buying up a lot of foreclosures.
What will the challenges be in 2011?
BOEHMiG Managing buyer and seller expectations in what
will seem like a return to good market conditions. In
reality, there will be more homes sold, but there will
still be more supply than demand. also, rising interest
rates will catch some by surprise. Tis will actually be
good for sales, as it will get some folks of the sidelines
and into a contract.
MillER Financing, especially for non-warrantable
condominiums. Prices will continue to be held down to
remain within the limits of FHa fnancing. For buyers
with cash, there will be enormous opportunities.

Dennis Mathews fondest memories of growing up in
Dayton, Ohio, are of working on cars with his brother
and dad. We restored Austin-Healeys, a Jeepster,
Sunbeam Alpine and all kinds of old used cars for my
seven sisters, says Mathews, who is retired from a 25-
year career in the grocery industry. Dad was always
on the lookout for inexpensive used cars we could
maintain for the girls to drive. With his dads help,
Mathews purchased his frst cara used baby blue 1964
Oldsmobile 442when he was 16 years old.
So, in 2004, when he and his wife, Jennifer, decided
to build a new home on Mabry Lane, in Brookhavens
historic district, they incorporated a 900-square-foot,
30-foot-tall garage into their plans. Te garage is just
one of many distinct features of the 5,100-square-foot,
$1.9 million custom Georgian-style residence, which sits
on almost 1 acre with its own gate, stacked-stone walls
and water features. Teres also an out-of-the-ordinary
basement, with a storm safety room that houses the
mechanics to keep the estate running smoothly, plus a
generator and a private well that enable the home to be
fully functional at all times.
Te piece de resistance, however, is the three-car
detached garagedeemed the Corvette Cathedral by
Mathewswhich can house up to six cars using hydraulic
lifts. Te garage also has an ofce, where Mathews usually
has the television set to NASCAR coverage.
Always a collector at heart, Mathews began
collecting cars seriously in 2002 when his business
aforded him the opportunity to own some classics. I
was fortunate to have a business partner who also liked
old cars, says Mathews, who co-owned four Atlanta
area grocery stores. Many of our trips were to car
shows. Te frst collector car he purchased was a 1968
British racing green, big-block Corvette coupe.
Today, Mathews owns a 1963 silver fuel-injected
split rear window Sting Ray Corvette coupeone of
only about 2,500 of a one-year-only styleand a 1965
red convertible Corvette Sting Ray, priced at about
$40,000 to $75,000 each.
The 63 is an original and spends most of
its time in the garage, so I can keep it that way,
Mathews says. The 65, which he spent several
weekends restoring with his son-in-law and grandson
two summers ago, is what he considers a driver
car. Tere isnt anything unusual about the car; it is
loud, fast and fun, he says. Next up, Mathews says,
he would love to rebuild a 1957 Corvette to cruise
around the neighborhood in.
I attend the local car showsIve made friends
who also collect, and we meet at diferent homes, hang
out in garages and talk cars, Mathews says. As my wife
says, We always know where the guys can be found
and they are defnitely not getting into trouble!

of espresso

Illys master barista,
Giorgio Milos, shares
the secrets of making a
perfect cup of espresso.
Miscela: The Coffee Blend
Arabica beans produce the best
espressos and contain less cafeine
than lower-quality beans. Where
and how the beans are grown
is also important, which is why
Illy has a training program for
growers, milos says.
Macinazione: Proper
Grinding of the Beans
For the best favor, grind beans
immediately before preparing
your beverage. Te best grind is
between fne and powdery; if the
cofee grinds are too fne, they
can result in over-extracted, bitter
espresso, milos says.If theyre
too course, the espresso becomes
watered down.
Macchina: Espresso Machine
A machine that achieves accurate
water temperature and pressure is
essential, milos says. Assuming
you have one, then all you need
to worry about is getting the
perfect grind.
Mano: Skill of the Barista
With super-automatic machines,
this is slightly less important.
Still, learning to operate your
equipment is essential to creating
perfect espresso.Skills include
properly flling your flter
basket, making the perfect crema
and expertly tamping your
grounds, milos says.

There comes a time in every mans life when hes
ready to trade up. First came the house, and now
its time to make the leap to the large V8 luxury
sedan. No, were not talking about those boats-on-
wheels that your father drove, but rather the top-of-
the-line sedans from some of the fnest European
manufacturers. These vehicles represent the
pinnacle of automotive technology and luxury. But
which one is best for you? We pit three of the
latest extended-length luxury sedans from Audi,
Jaguar and BMW against one another to fnd out.
Gentlemen, behold the fat cats of 2011.

Te large luxury sedan market has never been Audis
strong suit, always playing second fddle to Mercedes
and BMW. However, with the redesigned 2011 A8 L,
it looks like Audis position is about to change. Why?
its new A8 is simply outstanding in so many ways. A
technological tour de force, the redesigned A8 is a clear
leader in this comparison.
What you notice frst about the car is its absolutely
stunning interior. revolutionary for its gadgetry, yet a
standout for its attention to details and craftsmanship,
Audis latest cant be fairly compared to BMWs
comparatively staid 7 SeriesJaguars XJL is a far
worthier competitor. Youll immediately notice, on both
the XJL and the A8, inviting wraparound aluminum or
wood trim that adorns a two-tiered upper dash panel,
creating a much more inviting interior environment.
On the A8 youll also see small, yet pleasing design
touches, such as the yacht-inspired gearshift knob,
laser-etched aluminum buttons and an abundance of
soothing ambient lighting. BMWs design, in contrast,
is far less extravagant in the fner details. Te A8 L is
a joy to take on long journeys when you opt for the
$2,200 Premium Package, which includes 22-way
adjustable massaging front seats, a feature not available
on the XJL.
When it comes to technology, neither the XJL nor
the 7 Series can top the A8 L. Making its debut on the
A8 L is Audis next-generation Multi Media interface
with MMi Touch technology. Tis clever tool allows
you to enter addresses or points of interest by using your
fnger to draw the letters on a virtual chalkboard. Te
touch pad also doubles as radio presets to quickly locate
your favorite stations. While the A8s navigation screen
is some 2.2 inches smaller than BMWs, we appreciate
its ability to swivel out of sight when not in use.
On the road, the A8 L is a pleasure to drive. We
were thrilled by the A8 Ls outstanding fuel economy,
averaging 27 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in
combined city/highway driving, good enough to
trump the BMW and Jaguar. To put this fuel economy
into perspective, the v8-powered A8 L is more fuel-
efcient than the six-cylinder 7 Series and as efcient
as the Mercedes and Lexus hybrid sedans. How so?
Te A8 Ls all-aluminum body frame makes it light,
while a 372-horsepower v8 engine is mated to a highly
sophisticated eight-speed automatic transmission. Both
the Jag and BMW ofer only six-speed transmissions,
but the A8s eight cogs help give it the fuel economy
edge, even though its the only one in this group to ofer
all-wheel drive as standard.
A serious value, especially compared to the BMW
750Li, the A8 L starts at $84,000 with all-wheel drive,
some $3,400 less than the rear-wheel-drive 7 Series.
Tanks to its innovative redesign, Audi has a winner
on its hands with the 2011 A8 L.
Bottom line: Sophisticated engineering meets
elegant luxury, making the 2011 Audi A8 L the
champion of these heavyweights.
2011 Audi A8 L: Whiz Kid
A technological tour de force, the new A8
is a clear leader in this comparison.

Teres no denying a mans love afair with a BMW. But
at a certain point, the hot rod M3 no longer fts your
image as the 5 Series becomes a little too middle-of-
the-road. its then that you start to get a little antsy, and
BMW hopes to keep you in the family by ofering up
its full-size, luxury fagship sedan, the 7 Series. But how
does it stack up against the Jaguar and Audi?
Being a BMW, its fair to expect the 750Li to be
the performance leader in this group. And it is. With a
twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter v8 engine developing 400
horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, the 750Li beats
out the Audi and Jaguar as horsepower king. Mated to
a six-speed automatic transmission, the 750Li runs from
zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, 0.2 and 0.6 seconds faster
than the Jaguar and Audi, respectively. Unfortunately,
the BMW is also quite thirsty (14/22 mpg city/highway),
swallowing so much fuel that the federal government
slapped it with a $1,000 gas guzzler tax. is the BMWs
performance advantage over the Audi worth the pain at
the pump and the added tax? Te answer really depends
on your driving style.
Te BMW is the only one in this group that does
2011 BMW 750Li: Speed Demon
| 51
not use an all-aluminum body. As a result, the 750Li is
noticeably heavier, weighing in at 4,641 pounds, around
500 pounds heavier than the Jaguar and 188 pounds
heavier than the all-wheel drive Audi. Te added weight
hurts the 7 in corners, where you can really feel those
extra pounds. Tat being said, the 7 has the cushiest ride
of the bunch, soaking up bumps, thanks to its standard
driving dynamics Control system, which adjusts
shock-absorber frmness, steering, shifting and throttle
response based on your preference. in Comfort mode,
the 750Li makes even the most neglected Atlanta roads
feel like a recently paved Buckhead driveway.
Te 750Lis interior is no longer its strong suit in
the face of fresh competitors like the Audi and Jaguar.
While we love how spacious it feels, you dont get the
impression that this is the interior of a hand-tailored
luxury sedan priced at nearly $90,000. For example,
unlike in the Jaguar and Audi, there is no analog clock,
and the steering wheels center cap lacks leather stitching.
Te problem is compounded by the arrival of the new 5
Series, which borrows heavily from the 7 Series parts bin,
yet costs thousands less, thus diminishing the feeling of
exclusivity of materials that the 7 previously bestowed.
Still, the 750Li deserves praise for its large navigation
screen and excellent ergonomicssomething Jaguar
in particular could beneft from studying. in back, the
750Li ofers plenty of room to stretch with the most
rear legroom in this comparison. if you tend to be
the passenger or usually have a full car, you and your
companions will appreciate the additional room.
With a base price of some $8,000 more than the
Jaguar and $3,400 more than the Audi, the BMW 750Li
is not the best value in this comparison. Many features
that come standard on the Jaguar are optional on the
BMW. However, if youre a BMW purist, then look no
further, the 750Li is for you.
Bottom line: A lofty price and a less opulent interior
prevent the BMW 750Li from taking the crown this
time around.

Teres something special about driving a Jaguar.
Maybe its the double takes you elicit when approaching
the valet, or maybe its the feeling of exclusivity you
get when behind the wheelafter all, there were
just 13,340 Jaguars sold in 2010, compared to some
220,113 BMWs and 101,629 Audis. Te Jaguar is a
rare breed, and the XJL is its fnest ofspring. But can
the XJL compete against such industry stalwarts as
BMW and Audi? in a word, yes.
Big and beautiful, the XJLs design impresses
inside and outyou cant help but notice an XJL
driving by. Te XJLs interior design looks bespoke
with luxurious leather and wood covering nearly every
surface. From the elegant timepiece that sits high on
the dashboard to the four spherical dash vents fnished
in high-gloss piano black with chrome metal trim, the
Jaguars interior looks and feels almost like a Bentley.
Tere are even little wooden tray tables that extend

from the front seatbacks to allow rear-seat passengers
a place to write or rest a laptop computer. Still, we
did have a few minor complaints. Because the XJL has
a strangely low dashboard, tall front-seat passengers
will fnd their knees rubbing up awkwardly close to
this area. We also were unimpressed by the sometimes
sluggish 8-inch touch screen, which controls too many
functions. For example, if youre following navigation
instructions but you want to activate the cooled seats,
you have to exit the map mode and enter the climate
control section to turn on the seata simple switch
would be more efective.
On the road, the Jaguar wowed us with a nimble
and athletic driving experience. Weighing in at just
4,131 pounds, the XJL is the lightest in this bunch by
some 330 pounds, a fact that can be felt in corners.
Plus, unlike the BMW, the Jaguar comes standard
with sticky 19-inch wheels. Tough the XJL is the only
vehicle in this comparison to not ofer all-wheel drive
at least as an option, the Jaguars winter driving mode
helped to reduce wheel slippage. Youll fnd this feature
particularly helpful when encountering icy conditions.
Te XJL is powered by a 5.0-liter v8 engine that
makes 385 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. Zero to
60 mph takes 5.4 seconds, placing the XJL 0.2 seconds
behind the BMW, but still 0.4 seconds ahead of the
Audi. if you crave more performance, Jaguar gives you
the $90,700 Supercharged XJL. Tis model will trounce
the 750Li with its 470 horsepower, shaving of fve-tenths
of a second from the XJLs zero-to-60 sprint.
But what surprised us most about the Jaguar XJL
was its value proposition. even with standard 19-inch
wheels, no-charge maintenance for fve years, the best
warranty in this comparison, and standard heated and
cooled front and rear seats, the XJL is still $8,000 less
than the 750Li. numbers like these are impossible to
overlook when considering your next luxury sedan.
Bottom line: Te best value in the group, the 2011
Jaguar XJL delights with its eye-catching design and
nimble performance.

To mark their 75th anniversary, Jaguar created a
seductive new concept car, the C-X75, a vehicle that
hints at a very bright future for this storied automaker.
Te C-X75 is a range-extended electric supercar
powered by a unique gas turbine engine. Te C-X75 plugs
into a standard electrical outlet to charge its lithium-
ion batteries. A complete charge takes about six hours
and supplies approximately 68 miles of zero-emissions
driving. Travel beyond this limit and an onboard micro
gas turbine spools up to charge the batteries, providing
a range of up to 560 miles between fll-ups.
each gas turbine weighs just 77 pounds, making
the C-X75 a serious lightweight. with four electric
motors providing propulsion to each wheel for a
combined 195 horsepower and 1,180 lb.-ft. of torque,
the C-X75 will jump from zero to 60 mph in just
3.4 seconds.
The C-X75 is rolling art. penned by brilliant
Jaguar designer ian Callum, the C-X75s shape was
inspired by the 1966 XJ13 Le Mans prototype. with
the unique turbine engine, Callum had the freedom
to create a body thats both incredibly short and lower
than almost anything else on the road. inside, the
C-X75 is space-age, showcasing brilliant metal work
with an instrument panel that looks like it was crafted
from a single piece of aluminum.

After a long absence, the esprit, the most iconic Lotus
ever produced, is set to make a triumphant return.
Te striking new esprit is a two-seater with a mid-
engine confguration, giving it a short nose and even
shorter rear overhangs. Te side profle is markedly
aggressive, with a singular pillar stretching front to
rear, forming the engine compartment and strong rear
haunches. Full LeD headlights complete the high-tech
look beftting the original esprit. From the back, twin
tailpipes converge in the center and are built into an
aggressive rear difuser.
The new esprit promises to be a serious road
rocket, powered with a 5.0-liter v8 engine with up to
620 horsepower. Factoring in the esprits low weight
of 3,190 pounds, it should sprint from zero to 60 mph
in less than 3.4 seconds. Te esprit also is rumored to
introduce a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission
that should help achieve a supposed top speed of 205
mph. if the production version delivers on numbers
like these, the esprit will easily earn back its supercar
title. Lotus has not released pricing for the new esprit.
However, it has promised the new esprit will hit Lotus
showrooms by spring 2013a date thats worth adding

Mercedes hot-selling C-Class goes under the knife for
2012. Te most noticeable changes to the new C-Class
can be seen inside. No longer does the navigation screen
disappear when not in use thanks to a more integrated
center stack. Mercedes also has addressed one of our
gripes with the old C by installing a new three-spoke
sports steering wheel.
perhaps the biggest change, however, is one you
wont see unless you open the hood. its there where the
C350 Sport gets a new v6 engine that increases output
from 268 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque to 302
and 273 respectively. Te added power coupled with a
redesigned seven-speed automatic transmission help the
C350 run from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. with
this new engine, the C350 gets 15 percent better fuel
economy than the outgoing model, chalking up 21 mpg
in combined city/highway driving.
Te exterior of the 2012 changes only slightly with
new sweeping bi-xenon headlamps that now feature LeD
daytime running lamps. Mercedes has yet to release
ofcial pricing for the new C-Class, but MB expects a new
entry-level C250 model to be priced less than the current
models base price of $33,990. Look for the 2012 C-Class

the explorer was completely reinvented for 2011.
Gone is the body-on-frame construction of the old
explorer, in favor of a more car-like unibody chassis.
Te result is dramatically improved handling, a more
comfortable ride and reduced weight. Te explorer also
is helped by Curve Control technology to keep you
planted in quick maneuvers.
inside, Fords new explorer shines, especially in
comparison to its foreign counterparts. Not only is this
the best new Ford interior ever, but its also far better
than any of the explorers import competitors. Ford
benchmarked Audi in designing the interior, and it
shows with soft-touch materials and real metal speaker
grilles. Te explorer even uses acoustic-laminated dual-
pane windows for a quieter ride.
Standard on the top-line Limited model is
MyFord Touch, a central 8-inch LCD touch screen
that operates everything from the navigation system
to a sophisticated media hub. Te navi even plans trip

Inside Story
Get behind the wheel of Bentleys epic
new grand sports tourer, the exquisitely
redesigned 2012 Continental GT.

| By Nate Chapnick |
Since its introduction in 2003, the Bentley Continental GT set the bar for
automotive luxury and design. With this completely redesigned GT, Bentley
proves once again that its vehicles will be the ones by which all others are judged.
Powering the GT is a refreshed, slightly more potent 12-cylinder, twin-turbocharged
engine that pumps out 567 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. This increase in
power, coupled with a revised suspension setup, gives the Continental GT an even
sportier driving demeanor. Zero to 60 mph comes in merely 4.4 seconds. Theres
no doubt that the Continental GT is a blast to drive, with performance to shame a
supercar. With all these changes on the outside, though, its inside where Bentley
has really stepped up its game. Find out how as Mens Book Atlanta brings you this
exclusive inside look at the $192,495 2012 Bentley Continental GT.

it takes one Bentley craftsman a minimum of eight hours to assemble

Navigation
no longer is Bentleys navigation system a sore spot for the Gt. Te
new navigation system is now highly advanced with Google Maps and
sophisticated 3-d imagery, making it easier than ever to fnd your
destination. an onboard 30GB hard drive provides plenty of space to
upload your favorite music.
Coined brightwork surrounds the navigation screen and elegantly integrates
it into the rest of the center stack. inputting destinations and following
navigation instructions is a breeze with this large 8-inch touch screen.
Center Stack
a Breitling timepiece looks like it came right of your wrist. Bentleys
signature bulls-eye aluminum vents (with organ pulls to control the air
intensity) look as superb on the dashboard as they feel to operate.
inspired by Bentleys logo, the center console is formed by two
dramatic leather wings that fank the center stack, rising from
the lower console and extending upward to form the upper dash
panel. Lovely contrast stitching makes even the handiwork of Guccis
craftspeople look second-rate.
Lower Console
a knurled metal shift knob is a joy to handle and is a work of art
in its own right. a convenient storage area for your wallet is directly
below the easy-to-use climate controls. even the controls for the seat
heaters and coolers receive the knurled metal treatment.

interioran easy way to carry and display the cachet of owning a

adjust to myriad positions to keep you comfortable on long drives.

The Next Big Thing
He spent his twenties trying to break into acting and his thirties working nonstop. Now in his
forties, Aaron Eckhart is living life his way.
By Elina Fuhrman | Photography by John Russo | Styling by Annie Psaltiras for The Wall Group
Every single day I thought I was going to die, Aaron Eckhart says
of the challenges flming this months eagerly anticipated Battle: Los
Angeles. Te picture, set in Santa Monica, might have been a big-
budget studio flm, but the actor recognized that his parta marine
fghting an alien invasionwas a gritty role. People would say,
Aaron, its a popcorn movie, why are you so intense? and Id be
like, No, its not a popcorn movie, Im at war! Its life and death!,
he says. He looks around the Santa Monica cofee shop where were
chatting, a few hundred yards from where the Battle: Los Angeles
alien invaders rise out of the ocean. It was the hardest movie I ever
did, both physically and mentally.
Eckhart is beyond serious about acting and exceptionally
single-minded about his work. Its the storytelling aspect, trying
to be real under imaginary circumstances, what happens when there
is energy between actors, he says. Im addicted to the chase of that.
Its a feeling like no other; its addictive and exhilarating, and it
happens rarely.
Looking for roles that will take him there has become a
requirement for the 43-year-old. When I was doing Battle: Los
Angeles, I thought I was at war, he says, sipping his cofee. I think
people were like, Tis dude thinks hes a real marine.
Sitting at a small table in the Zen-like garden, unrecognized,
dressed in a plaid shirt and cargo pants, Eckhart looks like nothing
so much as one of the guys guys hes made a career of portraying.
He played the biker boyfriend of Julia Roberts in Erin
Brockovich, the tobacco industry lobbyist who struggles to make his
son proud of him in Tank You for Smoking, Gotham Citys district
attorney Harvey Dent in Te Dark Knight and Catherine Zeta-Jones
paramour in the romantic comedy No Reservations, among other
memorable mans man roles. Tat kind of strong character seems to
be what appeals to Eckhart, who cites Sean Penn, Daniel Day-Lewis
and Javier Bardem as actors he admires.
Eckhart co-starred alongside Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole
(released late 2010 to critical acclaim), a gut-wrenching story of a
grieving couple who lose their child. Tis is one of those movies
that you wait your whole life for, in the sense that its a great
challenge, says Eckhart. Even as he shines in the early glow of
critics accolades for his portrayal of a heartbroken father, Eckhart
shows humility and realism about the ambitions required to succeed
in Hollywood.
Everybody who looks at my career right now thinks that Im
doing pretty good, but Im thinking its the worst time of my life,
he jokes. He catches himself and laughs. I still feel that my career
is an embryo. I still feel that my great roles are ahead of me, I still
search for them, I still have the angst.
Eckhart tells the story of how it all began at age 14. Between
playing rugby, basketball and soccer in high school in England, he
auditioned for the school musical Youre a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
I dont know why I went to audition for it, he says. Nobody else
auditioned for Charlie Brown, so I got Charlie Brown. In some
ways acting chose him. It wasnt until that play that Eckhart realized
this might be his future. I mean, Im a sports guy, but from that
day on, I was an actor, he says excitedly, as if the realization is still
brand-new after all these years.
Te California-born Eckhart spent his teenage years in Europe
after his dads work took the family to the UK. Te move also
fostered Eckharts love for travel. Wed jump in the car and drive
from London to Algiers. Weve seen every cathedral and every castle
in Europe. Id go with my friends and ski the Alps twice a year,
which was insane, he says of his formative years. Raised as a
Mormon, he spent two years in his late teens in France and
Switzerland on a mission. After trips to Australia and Hawaii, where
he spent his time surfng, he wound up at Brigham Young University
in Utah. I went to college, but I never thought about going to
college, he says. I never thought about going into businessI was
an actor.
Did he have any doubts? Nooo, says Eckhart. I knew
something was burning inside of me, and I was young enough not
to be discouraged.
He spent his twenties, like many actors in New York, auditioning
for everything. I went on thousands of auditions, but [he started
making progress] when Neil [LaBute], my friend I went to school
with, called me up and we did a movie called In Te Company of Men,
he says. It changed my life. From absolute nothing, not even able to
get an agent for flmI could only get a commercial agentto Sean
Penn calling me on the phone the next day. It was insane. And its
been a ride ever since. Te ultra-low-budget flm noir (Te movie
was made for $25,000, says Eckhart) about conniving chauvinism
in the workplace caught fre at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997
and gave Eckhart instant momentum and credibility.
More than a decade later, its a large dose of self-assurance
that helps Eckhart win the roles hes passionate about. He even
seems proud to say he didnt work in 2010. I want to do a
particular type of flm right now. I just wait for that movie to come
along that gets me excited, he says. My tastes have changed as
Ive gotten older.

He looks forward to playing a CIA agent who fees assassins
with his daughter in Expatriate, set to start flming in Europe
shortly, and is already on a strict diet. Whenever I do a movie, I
tend to get in shape, he says. Another movie, Te Rum Diary, with
Johnny Depp, is awaiting its release date.
Navigating your future in Hollywood is a tricky business these
days, and much of it is out of your control. As long as youre willing
to come at it in a diferent way, theres no telling [what will happen],
because you are telling a truthful story, says Eckhart. Hes also not
too shy to admit that reinvention is a normal part of an actors
journey, and that hes reinvented himself two or three times.
After another pause, Eckhart lets loose with one last observation.
Ive never been, in my career, the next big thing. Ive never been
that guy.
Well, until now.

What are your impressions of Atlanta?
While I havent spent much time in Atlanta, I have been in the city
during the most beautiful times of year, the spring and the fall. Its
very lush, very green and very rich in terms of its tapestryits
always beautiful to fy into Atlanta. Its an emerging city that also
has a beautiful countryside. Its very activeAtlanta has great
sports teams and everybody is outside. I like that.
What city do you consider your home?
My home is in Los Angeles but I live a nomadic life, Im a wanderer,
I just go wherever the movies take me. Ive been everywhere and
have a healthy respect for other cultures.
Do you live in the city?
I live in Malibu on the beach. I surf, I bike, I run, I do everything
outdoors. Im a pretty outdoorsy guy.
How have your parents infuenced you?
My parents are very educated and very worldly, and they took us
to every cathedral and museum in Europe. Tey infused me with
work ethic, principles, work valuesthey are a great sounding
board for me. Tey are just very good people, very strong, they
come from a world where you worked and you worked all the
time and you worked hard and you are not fashy, you just go
out and do your best.
What is your biggest dream?
I have a couple: Id like to make my own movies, direct and act
in my own movies. And Id also like to have a family. I dont
have a wife and kids. I just worked through my 30s, Ive never
settled down. Im fercely independent. Im sort of a loner, you
know? But all those things dont preclude a wife. I just want to
fnd the one to live this life with me. I feel like Ive had so many
blessings, such a varied life, such a blessed life and I want to
build a life with somebody.

Do men and women see eye to eye when it comes to
visual health? Tats the question that the American
Optometric Association recently asked during its
annual Eye-Q survey. Findings show that men and
women differ in how they view the best nutrition
for healthy eyes and proper UV protection. Of those
participating in the survey, more women (35 percent)
than men (28 percent) check for UV protection when
buying sunglasses. However, this is an important factor
to consider, because overexposure to UV rays can cause
damage such as cataracts and even skin cancer around
the eyes. Te men win when it comes to knowledge
about the best nutrition for eye health, naming
spinach, rather than carrots, as the optimal food for
healthy eyes. (Spinach is a great source of lutein and
zeaxanthinantioxidants that help protect against age-
related macular degeneration.) Additionally, more than
50 percent of both men and women reported vision-
related problems resulting from prolonged computer
use. Te AOA recommends taking breaks every 20
minutes by looking into the distance for 20 seconds
to refocus the eyes. Yet the majority of both men and
women said they took visual breaks every 30 to 60
minutes. Te survey also found that respondents in
both groups noticed changes in their vision around the
age of 40. Te bottom line is simple: Schedule regular
eye exams for early detection of vision problems. For
more information, visit aoa.org.

Whats the State of Your Prostate?
According to prostatehealthguide.com, more than 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer
each year, and nearly 30,000 of them will die from the disease. (If you dont already know, the
prostate aids in the production of semen.) Te prostate gland grows to about the size of a walnut
during puberty, and it remains the same size until about the age of 40, when it starts to grow again.
While most men arent bothered by it, some will develop an enlarged prostate, prostate cancer or
prostatitis (or more than one of these diseases). But there is good news, too: Prostate cancer can be
cured if it is detected early. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include blood in the urine or semen, or
chronic pain in the hips, thighs or lower back. For more information, visit prostatehealthguide.com.
Risk Factors
Family History If your father, brother or other close male relative has or has had prostate
cancer, your chances of developing the disease are doubled.
Race African Americans have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world.
Age If you have a family history of prostate cancer or if you are African American, the risk of
developing prostate cancer increases after age 40. Other men should be concerned after age 50.
Diet Of course, nutrition also plays a role. Beware of diets that are low in fber and high in fat
and red meat, as these elements have been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Prevention
Get regular checkups.
Eat more fber, fruits, soy protein and cooked tomatoes, since these foods have all been shown
to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Engage in regular physical activity.
Dont smoke.
limit cafeine and alcohol, but drink plenty of water.
Have more sex!

Take your next adventure to new heights with the Vasque Scree
collection of lightweight hiking boots. Tis mens style in black olive/olive
drab is waterproof and features a sticky Stealth Rubber console for sure
footing on uncertain terrain. Meanwhile, the cushy heel and foot bed
provide comfort on the climb. $120 to $145, at REI
Dont Forget the Milk
Milk does a body good in more
ways than one. For starters, it aids
in keeping bones and skin healthy.
Its also important to consume milk
for a healthy immune system and
to prevent illnesses such as obesity,
dental decay, hypertension and
some forms of cancer. In addition
to providing calcium, milk is an
excellent source of vitamins A and B,
protein, phosphorous, and ribofavin.
For those who are lactose intolerant,
the U.S. Department of Agriculture
suggests choosing lactose-free
alternatives, such as yogurt,
cheese or lactose-free milk. Other
alternatives that also provide plenty
of calcium include canned fsh, soy
and rice beverages, calcium-fortifed
juice, cereals, breads, and some leafy
greens like kale and bok choy.

Insiders Advice
How to Train
Train for your climb with a mix of lower-body strength training and general
cardiovascular workouts like hiking, running, and stair climbing. When possible,
exercise while wearing the same boots you will be wearing on Kilimanjaro to
ensure they are comfortable and broken in.
Planning Your Ascent
Tere are six main routes by which to climb Kilimanjaro. expect to spend between
fve to nine days on the mountain depending on your route. extra days on the
mountain give your body additional time to acclimatize to the high altitude and
increase your likelihood of a successful summit.
How to Get There
Mt. Kilimanjaro is located along Tanzanias northeastern border with Kenya.
Kilimanjaro International Airport can be reached on a daily direct fight from
Amsterdam or via a one-hour fight from nairobi. A visa can be obtained online or
in the airport upon arrival.
When to Go
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, and each month has its advantages. Te
main trekking seasons correspond with the mountains two dry seasons. January
and february tend to be a bit colder but are often quieter than the other peak
season of August and september.
Assembling Your Team
guides are required to climb Kilimanjaro. Tey are available at the park gate, but
it is best to make arrangements ahead of time. Your guide will play a crucial role in
your success on the mountain, and quickly become your most trusted ally on your
quest to the top. setting of from the base of the mountain, you will be fanked by
an army of support staf. In addition to guides, you will have an entourage of local
porters as well as a few cooks. Te average staf to climber ratio is about 3-to-1
and this isnt an extravagance, its a necessity.
Where to Relax Post-Trek
Characterized by its clear blue water and beautiful sandy beaches, the idyllic
islands of Zanzibar are the perfect place to relax after an arduous week on the
mountain. Te Baraza resort (baraza-zanzibar.com), which features the frangipani
spa and oceanfront villas, ofers sheer luxury on the famed Bwejuu Beach. If youre
looking for a bit more adventure, photo hunt for the Big five (thats safari-speak

Such a feeling is rarely achieved at Americas highly ranked but

Kite Surf in Brazil
With hundreds of miles of nearly empty beaches,
a tropical climate and an average of nine months of
wind every year, Brazils Ceara coast has emerged as a
haven for kite surfers looking to catch major ocean air.
Cumbuco Beach is the hottest spot in the area, ofering
a variety of fatwater lagoons with slight swells and
numerous sand bars of the point that produce great
waves less than a quarter of a mile from the shore. With
help from an instructor, even novice surfers can learn
to execute moves in no time fat, while the village at the

Filled with luxury resorts willing to cater to your every whim, its easy to vacation in
Latin America and have the time of your life without ever leaving your hotel. But as
eco-tourism and adventure travel become increasingly popular, the area is emerging
as a premier destination. Best of all, because of their gradual transformation into
world-class havens for outdoor adventurers, most of these countries havent fallen
victim to overdevelopment or overcrowding, offering a relatively pristine cultural
experience. Travelers seeking a bit more of an adrenaline rush than one tends to
get from applying copious amounts of sunscreen and hailing the waitress for yet
another margarita will fnd plenty of adventurous opportunities.

Considering Ive spent the last three years reviewing restaurants for a living,
I feel like I have a decent handle on the Atlanta dining scene. But when
asked to name the most mind-blowing culinary experience Ive had since
joining the media ranks, my answer doesnt come from Bacchanalia, Bones
or any of Atlantas high-brow stalwarts.
It came one chilly night last year, in a turn-of-the-century house tucked
away in a quiet part of Athens. Te main room held two long communal
tables with benches and place settings for 24 people, all randomly brought
together for one reason: their love of food. For three hours I laughed and
talked with these new-found friendsfrom famous musicians to Atlanta
lawyersas we savored fve courses prepared by fve casually cool guys.
Sporting beards and fannel shirts, each one took turns coming out of
the kitchen and passionately talking about the ingredients, the sourcing
and how he prepared the dish. A bubbly young woman (who, ironically,
didnt appear a day past 21) gave heady introductions as she brilliantly
orchestrated each wine pairing. Patrons asked questions or stepped into
the kitchen to get a quick how-toa rare chance to speak on the same
level with such artistry. At the end of the night, our hosts stuck around
as people thanked them and gave donations to the cause. For fve years,
this bi-monthly donation-only ($75 is suggested) dinner has turned into
something that every Southern food hound wants to attend. Fabulously
unique food and wine, engaging company, and a majestic setting are all
engineerednot for proft, but for passionby a group of friends who
call themselves Te Four Coursemen.
Its easy to gush over the no-brainer brilliance of the setup. Te groups
ridiculously excellent lineup includes chefs from Athens famed Five &
Ten, Te National and Farm 255. Te menu changes with every dinner
and isnt released until guests arrive. Te list of attendees is chosen fairly

its magical.
recognition in Food & Wine magazine coupled with a television special
on the Cooking Channel has spun Te Four Coursemen as one of the
top secret supper clubs in the country. But in all actuality, its not secret,
it isnt a club, and it has less to do with exclusivity and much more to do
with learning, sharing and community. And the groups organic history
refects that.
Te Four Coursemen concept began fve years ago with Damien
Schaefer and randy Dudley, neither of whom are chefs, but, rather, friends
from college who had both studied design and shared a passion for food.
Schaefer had just returned to Athens from a brief postgraduate stint in New
York, and admittedly admired Dudleys cooking. So, frankly, he just wanted
to cook with him, not only for the camaraderie, but also to become better
himself. Tis evolved into inviting friends over for their weekly experiment,
and everything progressed from there.
When I moved back to Athens from New York, randy and I started
cooking for friends at my house, Schaefer explains. We got to be friends
with this guy, Patrick, who, at the time, was a chef at Te Grit. And so we
said, Why dont you come cook with us this weekend? He was the frst
chef we invited to come over, and that instantly took it to a whole new level.
Te three of us cooked every Saturday. It was all about learning cooking
techniques and challenging ourselves and basically saying, Hey, come over
and eat this, and let us know what you think.
Te group continued to add kitchen members to their weekly ritual.
We invited my friend eddie, who I had known since college and was
the pastry chef at Five & Ten, and my friend Matt, the head chef at the
Farm, Schaefer continues. And we slowly started adding these people to the
Coursemen roster who were fun, old friends, who could also cook. I think
what really completed the group was adding Nancy to pick and pair wines.
She was a bartender at DiPalmas at the time, and she knows a lot about wine.
When you have the crme de la crme of an already heralded culinary
scene doing small-scale dinner parties, the word is bound to spread. And
fast. People started expecting to come over every Saturday, Schaefer says.
Tankfully, a friend of Te Four Coursemen (and frequent dinner attendee)
ofered the use of his restored shotgun house. Tis allowed the group to
decrease the number of dinners to roughly twice a month, but gave them
the opportunity to truly do it up right and open the door to many more
folks apart from just their friends. Teir e-mail list grew to more than 2,000
people, they began to use their website to preview and chronicle each dinner,
and, once announced, reservations would fll up in a matter of seconds.
Its not about going to a restaurant and eating a high-brow, fve-course
meal, Schaefer reiterates. Its about going somewhere of the beaten path
and having an experience. Te food is part of it, but so is sitting down with
new people of common interests. It becomes this thing that you could never
reproduce in a restaurant environment. Come in, ask questions, go home
and do it yourself. We arent pioneers in any way; were like someones
grandma. Were not doing anything diferent; were just asking people over
for dinner. Its what food is all about.
And while all this seems like a casual corralling, dont think each
menu isnt a totally real-deal, heady gourmand paradise. It is. But Ill let
you experience that for yourself.

Since opening in 2009, D.B.A. Barbecue in Virginia
Highland has been a go-to spot for its mouthwatering
barbecue and welcoming, upscale ambiance. But, recently,
the restaurant has developed a reputation for something
a little edgier and more unexpected: moonshine. On
D.B.A.s cocktail menu, the once-outlawed liquor even
occupies its own category, with six diferent types available.
Owner Matt Coggin also developed three moonshine-
specifc cocktails: a pickled moonshine martini, made
with moonshine and pickle juice; the Georgia Mule, with
crisp ginger and lime; and, for sweet-toothed sippers, the
Banjo, which is shine and Whynatte Latte over ice.
People have started to think of us as the place for
having moonshines, Coggin says. And, hopefully,
in the future well be seeing more of them coming
into the market.
If the last few years are any indication, moonshine
could soon dominate Coggins cocktail menu. Also
known as white lightning, rotgut, panthers breath, white
dog and mountain dew, moonshine has risen from its
humble beginnings in the hills of Appalachia to become
the latest it spirit in the cocktail craze. Loosened
government regulations on licenses, a relatively simple
distillation process (moonshine is essentially unaged
whiskey) and the appeal of its illicit, Prohibition-era past
have all played a factor in the renaissance.

Moonshine has become so big that its even
hit the Big Apple. Since launching in April, kings
County Distillery, the frst (and only) moonshine
distillery in new York, has sold 4,000 bottles from
its tiny headquarters in an industrial Brooklyn
neighborhood, using just a handful of 8-gallon
mail-order stills. Co-founder Colin Spoelman, whos
from a dry county in kentucky, and his business
partner are already discussing expansion. You learn
that every culture has their moonshine, Spoelman
says. You [make] it in nYC, and you get all these
characters from all over the world who have their
own version of moonshine.
But moonshines historyand heartremains
in the South. Its here, for example, that legendary
bootleggers like north Carolina native and nASCAr
hero Junior Johnson learned his remarkable driving
skills by outrunning police on mountain roads. Johnson
added moonshine to his Southern culinary oferings in
2005; now, his Midnight Moon label is available in
most states, with demand coming from as far as Japan.
In July, Ole Smoky Distillery opened in
Gatlinburg, tenn., billing itself as the states frst legal
moonshine distillery. By February, its moonshine,
which is sold in mason jars for $24 and up, is expected
to be available in 20 states.
Its crazy that weve seen as much excitement
as we have about it, says Joe Baker, a co-founder of
Ole Smoky. And it doesnt seem just to be a local east
tennessee thing. Its from all over the world.
Plans are also in the works to build a distillery
in Dawsonville, about an hour northeast of Atlanta.
For local historian Gordon Pirkle, moonshines
growing popularity is perhaps best evidenced by the
explosion of visitors to what was previously called the
Dawsonville Fall Festival. After changing the events
name to the Mountain Moonshine Festival, organizers
have watched attendance swell from several thousand
to nearly 100,000. Tats one of the best marketing
tools weve had, Pirkle says.
Modern-day moonshiners are a savvier, more
sophisticated breed than their predecessors, and as a
result, moonshine has evolved from gut-burning and
potentially poisonous to strong but smooth enough
to stand alone for sipping. And for many distillers,
preserving moonshines traditions and showcasing its
once-condemned history is equally important.
I remember my dad showing me a newspaper
article about one of my great uncles, who had been
arrested down in knoxville, with about 700 gallons of
moonshine, Baker recalls. It made the front page, and
its funny how a story like that even 10 or 15 years ago
would have been embarrassing. But, fnally, we can be
proud of [this tradition].

In the race to collect one of 500 newly minted Lexus
LFAs, Hennessy Lexus of Atlanta made Atlantan
Roy M.*, a retiree from a successful career in medical
services, the proud owner of the enviable frst ridein
the country. Tis singular supercar, equipped with a
V10/552-horsepower engine, goes from zero to 60 mph
in 3.6 seconds, crowning it the new king of the luxury lot.
Clocking in as the frst car to ever go head to head
with a Ferrari 599 GTB, the LFA boasts a sleek Carbon
Fiber Reinforced Plastic body and stands as the new
fagship for Lexus F portfolio. Car enthusiasts were
skeptical since Toyota hadnt produced a sports car since
the sensational 2000GT of the late 80s, says Roy, who
placed his order for the car six years ago. But the LFA
won the battle. Examples of luxe craftsmanship and
sheer ingenuity, only 150 will be released in the United
States, selling at a $380,000-plus price tag.
I generally put about 1,000 to 1,500 miles on
a car and keep it for about a year, Roy says. Its all
about priorities. It was an expensive purchase, but its
a passion I have. You only live once, and the way I look
at it, lifes short, so drive fast.
Previous models in Roys collection have included
a Maserati, six Porsches, a Lotus Esprit, two Audi
R8s, 13 Lexuses, fve Ferraris, a Lamborghini and an
Aston Martin, all of which exemplify the collectors
impeccable taste for speed and craftsmanship. But the
LFA is undoubtedly his crown jewel.
Roy will be an ambassador for this car, close
friend Bill Florence says. To sum up his purchase,
Roy admits, Its more than a Cadillac, yet less than
a Learjet.
