Normally, when the high school girls’ golf teams hit the course for regional play, the teams aren’t just battling one another; they are battling chilly and wet weather. On Thursday though, when the Ann Arbor Pioneers hosted a Division 1 regional at the University of Michigan Golf Course, the weather was unseasonably warm. “It’s just gorgeous out,” Pioneer coach Steve Rodriguez said. “In Michigan, you never know what the weather is going to be like, so it’s always a nice surprise to have the

weather cooperate.” The weather wasn’t the only pleasant surprise for Rodriguez, as his team played its way to a third place finish in the regional tournament, earning a spot in the state finals. Plymouth led the way at the tournament, winning the regional with a team score of 342. Local team Saline took second in the tourney, shooting a team score of 361 to lock up one of the three state tournament berths. The Pioneers rounded out the state tourney-bound teams with a score of 386. “I’m really happy for the girls,” Rodriguez said. “They have worked incred-

ibly hard over the last several weeks.” While the Pioneer girls’ golf program has been strong over the past few years, Rodriguez said he was especially happy to see this team go to state. “This is a really, really young team,” he said. “When you have a team this young, it’s almost more important to qualify for the tournament than it is to play in it. You can’t coach experience. You have to see it first. You have to score well in a tournament like this.” The Pioneers’ were led by Photo by Mike Larson/A2 Journal junior Sloane Supica, who Pioneer golf coach Steve Rodriguez smiles after his team took third in the regional shot an 85. tournament.
